Surviving a plane crash

I was watching that Discovery show, last night, where they crashed the airliner (if you know me well, you'll know I'm morbid like that). Gleaned:

Sit as far back in the plane as possible! And it looked to me like an aisle seat's better (less shit seemed to crash down there). Know where the nearest exit is, 'cause you'll want to get out ASAP (in case the jet turns into a fireball, and all). "Braced" position is best (maybe with a pillow in front?). And cover the top of your head, too!

In the monitored crash, the dummies' ankles and feet positions indicated potential for fractures, so you might want to keep your feet off the floor (that's just my theory, though). Again, you'll need to get out PRONTO! Some further good info here:

I haven't been on a plane in 3 1/2 years and my thoughts about flying out next week are almost exactly as above. I'm sitting far back as possible in an aisle seat.

I used to have airplane crash dreams all the time.

I read somewhere that means I'll never die in a plane crash. That doesn't make much sense to me, but I'm sure not afraid to fly!

i presume this is similar to the c4 one. where they used a remote control after the pilot jumped out the plane and they had crash test dummies inside?

it was pretty boring really. and one crash differs from another

personally i don't think they replicated any realistic crash well, as they sent the plane into a fast dive whilst any pilot would have done what they could to prevent that

had they killed the engines and then tried to recover and land the plane they would have got more realistic results

I love to watch those types of shows but find now that I can't as they make me too anxious to fly.

:dork:

I'm firmly planted in denial

I know right! I read the book Alive years before the movie came out... great book. It tells both sides of the story. The search and the men on the mountan. (there is another movie too that came out before the one in the 90s did.)

As to where to sit? I am of a mind set that thinks there is no better place to be other than KNOWING where the exits are. Have clothing for the weather on hand.

When it's your time to go, you are going. lol I don't think it really matters where you sit on a plane, depending on how the plane crashes, it's a luck of the draw. shrug Flying doesn't scare me one bit. In fact, if I can't fly I don't go. Driving scares the shit out of me.

Hey, I saw this too! It was very interesting. I watch a show called "Air Disasters" on the Smithsonian channel as well. Guess you can call me morbid too. boxed That stuff is just interesting to me, finding out what went wrong and what kind have been done to prevent it from happening.

But as far as sitting in the back of the plane, I'm inclined to believe that its true. The plane crashes that I've read about. most of the time, the survivors, if any, were almost always sitting in the back of the plane.

thumbs up!

P.S. Statistically, you're safer in a plane than in a car.

I believe that, statistically, your odds are best in the back.

78% of statistics are 47% wrong.

There's no 'safe zone' on a plane if it's going down. So many variables to each and every crash. Wasn't the tail ripped off the plane that went down over the Andes in '72?

I saw a great documentary interviewing a few of the survivors. They went through all kinds of shit. Got some kickass recipes though, apparently.

Yes, but don't most planes go down nose first?

I would think that if a plane goes down nose first, nobody will survive.

But if a plane crash lands (for example, if there is no landing gear) then it's likely that the rear will touch down first, same as when it lands normally.

I've seen reports that say the back of the plane is safest. Just look at wreckage from some plane crashes; the taiil of the palne is usually intact. However, on the rare occassions that I fly, I tend to sit near the front. I want to be able to get off the plane quickly when it lands normally and safely at the airport.

I should've been clearer: I don't mean nose-down; I mean the front part of the plane hitting before the rear. And I'm pretty sure they said, on this show, that that's the way it usually happens. confuse
