Due to the storm and especially because of the subway shut down, my office is closed tomorrow, and possibly Tuesday, depending on how bad things are. Normally I'd be super excited, but we have a huge final report due on Wednesday (which I gave to my supervisor weeks/months ago) and she still hasn't finalized it. I hate waiting until the last minute (especially when it's completely avoidable) and now Wednesday is going to be even crazier trying to finish that report by the deadline. mad

stupid post was erased edit mad

lol we had an outage about an hour ago but it was only for a few minutes so someone must've hit a pole or something. I tell you if they have people out there to get there quick in case of a blackout, they come quick here in NC! lol

From the looks of things, Superstorm Sandy will reach the New Jersey coast before Monday is over and then dissipate into a tropical storm-like storm by the time it reaches Pennsylvania with lesser chances of it retaining that strength when it reaches inland New York when it's supposed to dissipate into a tropical depression. The current forecast has Sandy continuing into a NW direction.

Due to it being 940 mb in pressure, it's a question of how long it'll linger in the NE but the forecast seems to have it out by Thursday.

Yup. That sounds about right. Once these cyclones make landfall and tear through some stuff, they generally weaken, the chance for destruction lessens, and people in locations due to be hit afterwards are generally just left with the inconvenient effects of a lot of rain (like flooding, maybe a couple of small power outages). I'm just surprised how the media was getting in such a tizzy over this as a Category 1 hurricane; if this was a category 2 with a chance to evolve into a category 3 then I would have been worried for y'all. As a person who's lived through hurricanes of category 3 and upwards, I'm a little irritated that the words like "catastrophic" thrown around. By all means, I want everyone to be safe and prepared, but there is a kind of heightened tension in the reporting of this "super storm" that I don't feel is entirely fitting...anyhoo...keep updating us biggrin

I agree. There's gonna be some damage but I don't think it's gonna be that storm that's gonna swallow the Northeast whole lol But I will keep y'all updated. smile

I hate to say it, but I think they had us stay home today for nothing. It didn't start raining hard with the wind until a little before noon and to be honest the winds didn't pick up really strongly until 4pm (from what I could hear). It's still roaring out there now and I could be wrong, maybe it's not as safe as I think out there, but I've seen far worse than this...times when storms were so strong that I thought my roof was going to be blown off. Didn't experience that today. shrug Now it's a delay for work tomorrow. pout

I don't think I hear much wind anymore where I'm at in NC. The wind was good enough to have the power off for a second but not so strongly.

I'm calling friends and family in Philly, NY, NJ and Virginia and they are all hunkered down. So far, so good.

It's been reclassified as a cyclone when it made landfall in NJ. One guy was killed by a fallen tree and Cnn keeps showing that broken crane...scary.

I hope this thing weakens and moves out quickly...stay safe peoples.

Probably so people could prepare for the aftermath. If the power stays out for any length of time folks are gonna need to manage till the city gets back up and running.

Plus the authorities do that to keep stray people off the streets and out of their way. It cuts down on the number of rescues too.

I'm thinking that the aftermath is what the emergency managers are most concerned about.

CNN is reporting that the entire front just fell off a building.

Thnx...yeah I saw that on CNN too...

Yeah they're worried about high tide tonight and the fact that it's a full moon will affect the levels...

Winds starting to howl again, I guess it's time for round two ... neutral

Yeah we had some real strong wind gusts an hour ago, then it'll die down. Now it's picking up again but then again it's been like this all day and except for one brief outage, nothing has gone down.

I don't know how a full moon would affect anything but I know they had predicted something about a high tide. It goes with the pressure of the cyclone. That pressure is creating that high tide.

Urgh. They did mention something about the white stuff but that if it did fall that it wouldn't stick since the ground is warm.

Pressure's gone down a bit, so has the winds overall:

It had been 940 all day almost, but now it's back up to 947 mb. It was 85 mph with gusts of 115 mph, now the max winds have gone down to 80.

Snow, right? Yeah 4-8 inches were expected to fall in western NC, y'all may get more snow. I'm guessing because of the blizzard approaching the NE around this time that is helping the snow to come down here. It won't stick though. It had to be under 30 degrees to stick.

It shouldn't. Here in NC, the winds' max pressure is about 20 to 25 mph with 45 mph of gusts, moving in the western direction, by Tuesday, that should head in a northern direction and it may decrease to 30 mph of gusts and then no more gusts by Wednesday.
