Here is a side by side comparison of the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini. I think a lot has to be said about the iPads 4:3 screen aspect ratio which is perfect for reading documents and web pages. The Nexus 7 looks like torture. The Amazon Fire is even worse.

But competition is great for us consumers. The Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire are both sold at a loss to try and gain consumer traction, again which is good for us consumers. Before the iPad mini was announced I was about to buy either the Galaxy Note 2 or the Nexus 7. In the end I chose the iPad mini for it's screen ration, thin design, cellular connectivity, app ecosystem and quality design and construction. There really is no comparison. All the other specs are meaningless.

I didn't know that about the screen. I'd just assumed that the screens were the same (7").

Plus the iPad Mini has a 5-megapixel camera rear that can capture video at 1080p HD AND a front facing camera. The Nexus 7 only has a 1.2 megapixel front facing camera.

I'd wait another 18 months if I was considering an iPad Mini, Apple willl "upgrade" it.

Or you'll end up like 1st g of Ipad owners, owning something close to a tablet written in stone. lol

Walmart and Sams Club have the Nexus 7 16GB for $199 and the 32GB for $249, so tempting, I may just go check these out after work today

Gotta love the isheep.

Two years of slagging off smaller tablets, but as soon as apple do one its the holy grail.

I have an Ipad 3 and a Nexus 7 and the Nexus 7 wins hands down. Its simply the right size to handle. If I want to do more I use the laptop or desktop.

The ipad mini is more tempting than the full ipad but I won't get one for a simple reason. The Nexus 7 fits in a jacket pocket.

The plus is cheaper apps, universal charger, open system (which is a joy simple plonking on any film or music rip with recoding) and with Jellybean, a nicer OS (finally).

The kindle Fire HD looks good too but I worry Amazon are trying to copy apple with the crappy closed environment.

Definitely one advantage Nexus 7 has over apple but apple has a few advantages too

but i don't think many people care about the camera on the tablets. I've examined

the Samsung Galaxy tablets and they are nice too. I have a hard choice to make too.

This!!! I slip my N7 in my jacket pocket on the way to work, and read Kindle books and websites on the train.

Also, with regards to back cameras on tablets...... if you use it, you look like a complete and utter buffoon. We have cameras on phones for a reason.

And from personal experience, before I sold it to get the Nexus 7, I had the Motorola Xoom 2, an 8.9" Android tablet which had a back camera. In 8 months of owning it, I didn't use the back camera once.

The front camera is great for video chatting on Gtalk, Google+ Hangouts and Skype. But when I want to actually take a picture or video, I reach for my phone. I can't imagine ever being in a situation and wanting to take a picture where I DIDN'T have my phone.

I asked my cousin, who has an iPad 3, if he had ever used the back camera on it, and he hadn't.

Here is link with a review roundup for the mini. As with all Apple products, the verdict is of course good.
Android is getting better all the time, but they are still second rate. You get what you for.

There are good reasons to get the the little one the Nexus 7 over the iPad mini, pricing being among the best. But there are even better reasons. Reasons that are never too early for a child to learn.

1. Never get your hopes up.
2. You will have to settle. Settling is a part of life.
3. life is not fair.

And what better most memorable time to rub his little nose in it learn these valuable life lessons than bright and early on a cheerful Christmas morning. Just like everyone else. It's a rite of passage.

Finally got a chance to checkout Mini.

Seriously, I wouldn't buy this, hell Apple couldn't give me one . That thing is too damn small for anything, I couldn't read the print on that screen with my glasess on let alone off. geek The screen resolution is inferior to the 3g and 4g iPad's. I could see pixels for Christ sake! lol Another thing, that A5 processor is noticably slower, switching between apps and Safari it froze on me a couple of times. I didn't like the look - its thin frame - the feel of this machine. If I were in the market for a tablet of this size, I'd choose another brand besides this overprice mess.

I wouldn't care if it could cook a po'chop. biggrin

Pretty cool. Got all my email addresses set up, got connected to iCloud.

The only bummer so far is that many of the apps I love on my iPhone are not available (or are available in a different form) on the mini. For example, I have a Cooks Illustrated app on my iPhone that is tied to their website, but the only Cooks Illustrated app available for the iPad is for the magazine (which is different).

I'll probably spend some time this weekend finding new apps for the iPad.

But above all, the thing is effin' gorgeous. And the size is perfect - exactly what I was hoping for. touched
