Where To Donate Or Volunteer To Sandy Relief Effort

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – If you are looking for ways to offer support in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy, many organizations are looking for extra manpower or resources to aid in the relief effort.

Here are some ways you can offer support.

PETS

If you’re interested in helping animals find safe haven and good care after the hurricane, the Humane Society of the United States and the American Humane Association have teams working on the problem and they need your help. Donations are especially needed to help rescue stranded pets and aid animals currently in shelters.

Yeah Joy, the next Nor'easter is coming and supposed to hit on Wednesday.

There are warming stations being set up for the coming cold.

The Red Cross is out handing out hot meals as well.

My cousin just spent the day with her daughters at our place because they don't have electricity (or heat) either.

Humane Society of the United States

The Humane Society of the United States is sending animal rescue teams to areas to help pets that were left behind or stranded during the storm. About 15 million dogs, 14 million cats, and 1.5 million horses were in Sandy's path, Reuters has reported, and it has been a challenge to find accommodations for those pets.

The Humane Society is running two shelters and caring for more than 200 animals in the New York and New Jersey areas. The organization is also delivering pet food to shelters where families were able to keep their pets.

The American Red Cross, from my experience, is a very good charity organization. They were helpful in my family crisis years ago.

They got some flak for taking so long in getting to the hard-hit areas (Staten Island notably) - and now they're out there but no one really knows where.

But yeah, they are a good organization.

Verizon Pledges $1 Million to Match Customer Donations for Relief (update)

UPDATE: Verizon Wireless customers and the Verizon Foundation have pledged more than $3 million to the American Red Cross and other organizations aiding in Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. Customers can still make a $10 donation by texting REDCROSS to 90999.

As part of continuing efforts to support Hurricane Sandy recovery, Verizon announced it would match customer text-to-donate contributions to American Red Cross relief efforts up to one million dollars.

Customers can make a $10 donation by texting REDCROSS to 90999. Those who would like to give more can donate up to $50 via text.

“In addition to helping people stay in touch in the aftermath of this storm, our technology also makes it easy to donate funds that will be used to assist communities and individuals in their recovery efforts,” said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless. “Verizon’s matching contributions for texted donations is part of our longstanding commitment to the communities where we work and live.”

For those contributing, text messaging fees will be waived and 100 percent of each donation goes directly to the Red Cross. Verizon Wireless customers who pay monthly bills will see their donations on the next regular monthly bill. For customers using the company’s prepaid services, donations will be taken from customers’ prepaid balances.

The Verizon matching funds come from the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, and is part of more than $1.2 million the foundation has committed to relief efforts, including $200,000 to support local relief efforts in New York and New Jersey.

To support those in areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy, Verizon Wireless has also set up multiple mobile device charging stations to assist those still without power.
