Ebert ain't a fan either.

This is the first film Tyler Perry has appeared in that isn't his own personal work. He is best known, of course, as Madea, the 6-foot-5 matriarch Perry plays as a cross-dressing signature role. "Alex Cross" would perhaps have been much improved with Medea in the title role.

Damn.

I'm not putting Idris down though in any way.I agree he is a good actor. I worked with him in a movie that the beautiful talented Jada Pinkett Smith directed.He was very gracious & humble. He also doesn't care for Tyler's Madea character & most of his movies.Even though Tyler cast him in a leading role in one of them. Idris has been very vocal about it to. But my how the tables were turned when Tyler beat him out the leading role of a movie he wanted badly.Guess it doesn't pay to bite the hand that fed U.... giggle

Oh wow. lol

See my thing is this, I'm not saying that the ONLY role he can play are in his mediocre Madea movies, I'm not saying that he can't do dramatic roles (I thought he was pretty good in "Why Did I Get Married?" and the sequel) but in an action role? Neh. Like I said before, he doesn't convince me judguing from the previews. shrug I went to see Taken 2 instead, enjoyed it, even though it seemed like it was only 20 minutes long. lol

It seemed like a catalyst to change Tyler's image. Not really about the image of Cross the character at all. I'll have to agree with that reporter and say the movie's okay, not terrible not great, average. Tyler isn't a convincing action hero or genius detective, he tried, a little too hard I think. I do like some of his other non-Madea stuff so I know he has ability. There was a lot of very good talent in the movie.

Box Office: Paranormal Activity 4 Wins, Tyler Perry's Alex Cross Doesn't

Joal Ryan, eonline
4 hours ago

Well, that didn't quite work.

Alex Cross, Tyler Perry 's first starring stint outside of a movie branded as, well, Tyler Perry's, played below modest expectations at the weekend box office, debuting to a so-so $11.8 million, per estimates, and failing to expand beyond Perry's core audience.

Paranormal Activity 4 topped all films with a $30.2 million take, although, theater for theater, the Oscar contender The Sessions was the hottest ticket around—no sly nudity reference intended.

On one hand, Alex Cross played just like a Perry movie, drawing moviegoers who were predominantly African-American women over the age of 35 (and who liked the movie, grading it an A).

But this time the numbers didn't add up.

Alex Cross is Perry's lowest-grossing opener as an actor; it is the second-lowest debut of his career, after Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls, which he wrote, directed and produced.

The funny or not-funny thing, depending on your perspective, is that Perry was tapped to star in Alex Cross after filmmakers ditched Idris Elba ( Luther, Obsessed) because the British actor, who starred in Daddy's Little Girls, by the by, wasn't considered box office.

"Idris is great, but I don't know if he can open a movie," Alex Cross author James Patterson said in the Los Angeles Times.

Overall, Hollywood enjoyed a good weekend, with ticket sales up from last weekend and from last year.

While Paranormal Activity 4 led the way, it goes down as its franchise's lowest-opening sequel to date. This, a year after Paranormal Activity 3 blew out of the gate with a franchise-best $50 million opening.

In limited release in New York and Los Angeles, The Sessions, starring John Hawkes and Helen Hunt in various states of undress, grossed $120,000 at four theaters, its studio said, and posted the weekend's best per-screen average.

Elsewhere, a slew of holdovers held well, including Ben Affleck 's Argo, the animated Hotel Transylvania and Kevin James ' Here Comes the Boom, which had a slow start last weekend.

Here's a complete look at the weekend's top movies, per Friday-Sunday domestic estimates as reported by the studios and Exhibitor Relations:

Paranormal Activity 4, $30.2 million Argo, $16.6 million Hotel Transylvania, $13.5 million Taken 2, $13.4 million Alex Cross, $11.8 million Sinister, $9 million Here Comes the Boom, $8.5 million Pitch Perfect, $7 million Frankenweenie, $4.4 million Looper, $4.2 million

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They actually thought that Tyler Perry would be a better box office opener than Idris? ohgoon If that was the sole reason why they passed on Idris, that's laughable. lol
Hollywood's stupidity astounds me. Idris just earned my full respect from this travesty...
so true. elba has already 'crossed over' in that many people know him from his roles in the wire (or was it oz?), the office, luther, and his other work in movies that don't solely rely on african american women as the core audience. moreover, in terms of credibility, it's not even close. no one (outside of african americans, particularly females apparently) can think of perry these days without thinking of madea. doing a 180 and trying to look hard or badass just doesn't work for him. as one reviewer put it, perry looks too "doughy" to be alex cross. if the lionsgate green lighters had seen just one episode of luther, they would know that elba would have been able to put asses in the seats on the basis of the trailer alone.
but i have a feeling that perry wanted this role and to the extent that perry has been a huge money maker for the studio, i think they just wanted to stroke his ego and keep him happy. i just don't believe that patterson really, really thinks that perry was a better choice. i can't believe it, otherwise they are all just too stupid to live! LOL!
It was HBO's "The Wire" and yeah you are so right, Idris is internationally known. Didn't he earn a Golden Globe for his role in "Luther" this year?
yep, he sure did. i was watching, and that's why i put the luther season one dvds in my netflix queue. (those last two episodes i was on the edge of my seat!)
so that's why i say again, i *CANNOT* believe it had anything to do with elba. it had everything to do with perry throwing his weight around at lionsgate.
Tyler Perry CANNOT ACT! Seeing him attempt to act serious is boderline laughable.
With so many black actors trying to find work why did they give it to Tyler? He has hundreds of millions of dollars!
Idris Elba (with his fine self) would have been perfect for this film!
Sorry Tyler, if you're not in a dress you're not convincing. Won't be watching this mess.
Because Wesley Snipes wasn't available. He's still doing time in prison for not playing taxes. neutral
