Calling all computer tech's...

My laptop will not play cd's. It has before, but when I put in a disc, all I get is a clicking noise, like it is trying to start, but it won't. I have tried everything that I can think of,and I have googled the issue to see if I could find a solution.

I have updated the driver, uninstalled, and restarted my computer, ran a program that was supposed to check for issues and make repairs, and it still will not play. I have even tried to manually start it through my computer, and the windows media player. I thought maybe it was the media player so I downloaded RealPlayer, and still nothing.

Anyone else ever have this problem and know how to fix it?

I have a Gateway laptop, and it is running Windows Vista

When you insert ANY type of disc (data, music, whatever...) and you look under My Computer does the drive recognise the disc that's in there??

I have the Office CD in my J: drive and the icon reads as " OFFICE12 (Jsmile "

CD/DVD failure.

If you have put in different types of CD's music, movies, live Linux disc for example and it won't turn, I'd say you have the problem above. Sorry.

This is a dual drive, it can read CD's and DVD's as well as write them. If you put a disc in here does it recognize it? Does a title come up?

No,it just makes a sound like it is running. I get clicks, and humming sounds like it is spinning, but that's all.

if the clicking sounds occur at steady interwalls (like every 1, 2 or 3 secs etc.) then it's a pretty good sign that the drive is physically broken. When the drives function properly the ticking sounds are rapid and there are irregular pauses because the information is getting read according to the chunks of information that are stored on the disc. If it's just something like (tic)----(tic)----(tic)---- etc. then nothing gets transferred to the reading memory. The OS is just repeatedly sending a command for the device in an effort to access the disc.

Computer tech would probably swap it out, folks don't repair anything these days. neutral Even so, it may be cost prohibitive, you may want to consider purchasing an external USB CD/DVD drive. Checkout the link below.

well it is pretty easy to swap a CD-Drive out for another...

if I recall correctly it's a matter of unplugging the power cable, then the data cable and undoing 4 screws.

Old drive out, new drive in, replace the stuff in reverse order, install the new driver...

DONE!

Well, yes if you are technically inclined and had a tad of experience, go for it. It depends on where the old drive is located doesn't it? I'd recommend emailing the manufacture for your computers Maintenance and Service Guide. My drive was located in a place for which the only way I could get to it I had to take the notebook apart... shrug If you can do it fine but if you don't have any experience hell, buy a external USB CD/Drive and call it a day. lol

Very simple to fix this.

Just buy a MacBook.

The CD / DVD drive on my co-workers Macbook died and it would have cost 400€ to get it fixed.

lol

I am going to have to check into getting one. I am sure that they have to be cheaper than a new drive and hiring someone to put it in.
