Hmm. I have a different opinion. I think she really overreacted.

1. That wasn't bullying or an "attack" as she claimed.

Just because someone criticizes a life choice or style doesn't make it bullying. (that word is so overused these days).

2. Yes, the man overstepped his bounds by offering his unsolicited opinion, but his letter was tactful and he never used the word "fat." He attempted to appeal to her desire to use her physical appearance to be role model. He may have even felt he was helping her.

However, she becomes the tacky one. She purposely used her public platform to label him as a "bully" -- though an unfair label. That's distasteful and an abuse of her position to use the TV medium because she got upset with some private email sent to her. Her co-worker posted it publicly and then she discusses it publicly. Drama queens and sympathy-seekers, they are.

3. Why did this email even strike a nerve with her? Why did she share it with people trying to drum up anger against the man? I thought she said the man's words "meant nothing" to her. wink Did it resonate with her own internal guilt about letting her weight get out of hand? Is that why she wanted to shun him publicly and gather supporters for her weight?

Why create the mock superiority ("This is not OK!" "I want everyone to learn something from this -- This is anti-bullying month!) and act like she's championing rights when the reality is she's just wounded that he's making her reevaluate how she's handling her health and weight.

I'm appalled that people are saying good for her; What's good about it?

Of course, she can be whatever size she wants. That's not the point. if she was really secure about it she wouldn't need to pull this spectacle.

Yep...overreaction.

It wasn't as if he was swearing at her.

Strange as she says she is 'thick skinned' when if she was she would have totally ignored this. People in the public eye get these kind of abusive emails all the time, she should ignore it as otherwise it shows it has an effect. She seems way too thin skinned to be on TV.

Also she says the man who wrote it 'doesn't watch this show', so what is the point of making a scene if he's not even going to see it?!

She should consider herself fortunate. Back when I was doing TV, nobody would have hired someone her size. shrug

And, yeah - someone that thin-skinned should re-think a career in a field where you get a lot of that kind of criticism. If she can't laugh it off or ignore it, maybe she should switch to radio.

Just watched the video.

Although I feel she had some excellent points about bullying, learned behaviour, etc...I do not think her points really had anything to do with the email she received.

Going by what was writen, dude is clearly not bullying her.

Let's be honest here, his criticism is valid and unfortunately she did not address any of his concerns but instead just played the bully card.

But even with that said, I can't help but wonder if this guy would feel the same desire to write an email like this after seeing an overweight male newscaster. We all know how bad that double standard can be.

I'm also intrigued by why she decided that this was bullying and needed to be addressed publicly and other emails she receives do not require such a response. Believe me, people on TV receive TONS of emails every single day criticizing everything from the outfit they wore that night, to their hairstyle and anything you can think of under the sun.

she seems really defensive. whether she likes it or not, she is a role model. and, being obese is not a good lifsetyle choice. that being said, imo he was kind of an asshole to send her that e-mail. that being said, people should be able to communicate their displeasure, freedom of speech and all that.

Like someone else said, her response was way too long and really doesn't even have to do with the point of the viewer's email. I'm shocked that the network even let her use up 4-5 minutes of air time for her to respond to an email that otherwise, if she were secure, would had ignored. shrug

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I think that her point should have been why can't a fat woman be a competent newscaster? As someone said, I don't think that man would have sent that email about a male newscaster.

Why should I care what a newscaster weighs for heaven's sake!

I agree with JustErin and SynthiaRose.

Yes, she did have some good points about how bullying is skyrocketing and behavioral problems but that letter didn't seem like a bullying letter.

i get whut has been said by others about her "over reactin"

whut i haven't seen was the understandin that

this was nothin but a public service announcement

to let people know that it's "be aware of a bully month"

and she was right, you talk about the fat tv broad and

your kids go to school thinkin that it's acceptable to say the same.

funny how alot of people on this site are qwick wit the 'homophobe'

shit if somebody say 'faggot' but got no idea that callin a fat person

'fat' is a much more hurtful thing. some people are fat for medical

reasons (prednizone ingestion blows women up like balloons)

but even if a person is an 'unhealthy' fat there is no need to rub

it in on them. maybe they can call you 'fataphobic' which btw

makes as much sense as callin some-one who don't like gay

a 'homophobic', it's just unnessisary to hit them where it hurts...

I think the emailer should have saved that comment for the medical profession because nowadays, you have overweight doctors, nurses or nutritionist telling you to watch your BMI, and they're not following their examples. What kind of example is that?

Al Roker slimmed down for a time but he's not as slim as before and I certainly don't think a big issue would be made of it the way it is for women. It seldom is.

That letter was not a bully tactic. It was direct, perhaps even rude, but not worth the bully card she made it out to be. Develope thicker skin or change jobs. shrug

I agree. I wonder if he would have written this letter to an overweight male anchor. hmmm

I mean, face it...male news anchors can be bald, overweight, ugly as sin, over 65, and no one says a word. But the women have to strive to look like models. Ted Koppel was 65 when he retired in 2005. You'd never see a Jessica Tandy as an anchorwoman.

When did the word "fat" become a derogatory word like "faggot"?

Also, dude never even called her fat.

Also....let's be real here...MOST people are not overweight because of a medical condition. They are overweight and obese because of unhealthy lifestyle choices....which in reality is the lifestyle choices of the majority of people in North America - fat or thin.

Unfortunately, people have different metabolisms and some people actually wear their lifestyle choices directly on them and others don't. Is it fair to target those that do? I dunno, maybe not...but I'm sure most people wouldn't have a problem targeting a person in so called "role model" position smoking or doing drugs or any other poor lifestyle choice.

Why is criticizing an unhealthy lifestyle in terms of nutrition and exercise so taboo?

Why is criticizing an unhealthy lifestyle in terms of nutrition and exercise so taboo?

i've been wondering this as well. we feel free to criticize those who have an addiction to heroin, an addiction to alcohol, or to gambling. in fact we order them into treatment and rather expect them to feel shame about their self-induced condition. yet when it comes to obesity.... this is somehow different. our skyrocketing health costs will skyrocket even more due to this obesity epidemic, and we will all pay a price for this issue, but it is still taboo to direct criticism at folks who occupy two seats on the plane, bus or theater.

mind you, i understand that we ALL have issues to face in life, no exceptions. but this prohibition aaginst speaking out on this particular issue is really really weird, to my way of thinking.

by the way, the anchorwoman in question is more or less being overwhelmingly supported in her tirade, as you'll see if you check out different news sites' discussion boards.
