What the heck...???

Yesterday, I stubbed my next-to-the-big-toe toe. It hurt, but not bad enough that I couldn't walk it off - so I didn't even look at it.

Well, last night, I got into bed and it seemed like one of my toenails was catching on the sheet, so I took a look. And my toenail is almost totally torn off! omfg I mean...my toenail - all the way back - is just hanging by a thread.

Now, I don't know what to do with it. I put a band-aid on it just to hold everything together, because I'm sure the nailbed underneath is sensitive. It hurts slightly, but only if I think about it. But I know that if I cut the nail back to where it's still attached, it's going to hurt like the dickens - not to mention that it's going to be absolutely hideous for months.

How could I do that kind of damage and not even know it?

Thank gawd sandal season is over. confused

Check to see if you might not be developing diebetes.

I believe diebetics can injur their feet and not be fully aware sometimes. My father had type-II and had a gash in his foot and wasn't aware of it until my mother told him.

I am definitely not diabetic (I just had bloodwork done a couple months ago) - and do not have neuropathy. I felt it when I hit the toe - I just figured I gave it a good whack. I mean...I did look down when it happened and didn't see anything wrong with the nail (it didn't chip or shatter - and wasn't displaced in any way). And I can feel now that there's something amiss.

I think part of the reason I didn't feel it is that I played golf yesterday - and my toenails often hurt after I play golf, just from walking and the pressure of my shoes. I can feel the nail today because I'm wearing close-toed shoes.

Perhaps it's a brain tumor?

I know two people who didn't realize they had broken their tie till after they healed.....oops...three....my ma, my pa, and my ex-roommate....all the same toe too, the same one u complained of.

The sensitivity of the foot, yet its ability to tolerate stuff amazes me. Tickle my feet and I'm kicking and screaming...to feeling an ant walk on them, but I can walk all over rocks, plunge them in hot water, and walk with stubbed toes. It's crazy. Must be an interesting mix of nerves.

I forgot to update - I figured out why there wasn't any blood or lasting pain.

I took the nail polish off last weekend (I'd been afraid to do it sooner, in case there was raw skin underneath) - and discovered that the nail had actually shattered between layers. So there is still a thin layer of nail over the nailbed, and the root of the nail is intact.

So all I have to do is wait for the nail to grow out - which won't take nearly as long as having to generate a new nail (which is what would have happened if the nail root had been damaged). whew
