Police: Man arrested after driving with woman on car hood down interstate

Gwinnett County police said a man was speeding down Interstate 85 with his girlfriend on the hood of his vehicle Tuesday afternoon. Investigators call it an outrageous case of domestic abuse.

Police told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh it began as an argument between a boyfriend and girlfriend which escalated into an extremely dangerous situation for the young woman.

Police said if a group of strangers had not worked together to help her out, it could have ended in tragedy.

The drivers who called 911 from I-85 couldn't believe what they were seeing.

One concerned driver snapped a photo as proof. It showed a woman clinging to the hood of a Jeep SUV as a man barreled down the highway.

"I did almost a quadruple take to be honest with you," witness Adam Marlatt said.

The Buford man told Kavanaugh he was the first to call police.

"Then I see her beating on the windshield, crying, as I get close, she's begging him to pull over," he said. "Not only will he not look at me, but he's not even paying attention to her."

The witness said he knew he had to help the woman, so he began pacing the Jeep at the on ramp from Sugarloaf Parkway near Duluth.

He soon noticed others were keeping up as well.

"We start motioning to each other, like can you believe this. One guy is showing me he's taking pictures. He can tell I'm on the phone. And, I kind of mouthed to him, I'm on with 911."

After several miles, the witness said four different cars boxed the driver in.

"We went from 70, to 55, to 30, to 25 and we finally got him to pull over right at the Mall of Georgia headed toward Lawrenceville," Marlatt said.

Moments later, police arrived and arrested the driver Jonathan Salas, 29, of Duluth.

Incredibly, the woman was not injured, but was clearly in shock.
