So I took some time off to go to Chicago and when I got back...

...I found out that 200 of my co-workers had lost their jobs. I'm safe (again - fourth time I've been through this), but I know many people who got hit.

I'm feelin' a bit like a cockroach (hard to kill) - but a very grateful cockroach. whew

Thanks. They're "re-aligning" due to some shifts in our business. Necessary - but never easy.

I actually know two people who have been through this twice - they were let go in past purges, brought back, then sacked again yesterday. I feel especially bad for them.

Fortunately, the company did the right thing and paid severance, and is helping with outplacement services. Still tough, though.

Wow. That's huge. I'm not sure how big your company is, but that's got to be a significan percentage. I'm happy that you weren't one of them!

Thanks.

The company size varies depending on the time of year. In the fourth quarter (which we're just heading into), the headcount usually grows to several thousand. If we call it a 10% reduction, that's probably pretty close.

I survived the first two times my former company downsized. I didn't survive the third. Not a good time for men's apparel graphic designers.

I said we had layoffs - not that I'd had a lobotomy.

glad that you didnt make the cut. i certainly feel for the one who were let go/laid off.

i still havent found a teaching job so im still at walmart(gag)and they have just done their annual purge/hire thing as well. in a store that has 172 employees we lost 22(1/2 were full timers) and they hired 15 part timers for the holidays.

i HATE corporate crap.

It's a very tough environment right now - especially in retail businesses. I don't like layoffs (nobody does), but businesses have to adjust to changing conditions. If they don't, they go under - which hurts even more people.

It's not personal - it's survival.

Not exactly - since my work own isn't seasonal. But yeah, we're definitely a holiday gift destination.
