I just got a Samsung this year. shrug That means it will probably be 4 years before I even get another phone, lol. I couldn't give two shits about technology and fancy gizmos. I'm going downstairs in a minute a play some cassette tapes.

spit I'd play the few cassette tapes I'm managed to save over the years if my cassette player still worked. shrug

I'm glad they've kept it almost exactly the same size, while making the screen bigger and making it the thinnest smart phone on the market.

I'm not digging those Samsung mainframes for size. I always want the smallest phone!

Then you won't want the iphone 5. More Apple spin. There are thinner smart phones out there already.

They also implied the ipad was outselling PC's, but if you listen to the words carefully, they were only comparing it to a single PC manufacturer, of course, which there are hundreds.

My favourite was the quote about the milllions of people in their stores. But the key point was it was visitors, not customers. So they are trying to sound impressive by counting all the Gap wearers popping in to check their hotmail on a daily basis.

Add all the spin to the planted staff (the first three rows) to woop and cheer, and everything sounds wonderful!

You may be right, but it seems that th only phone thinner is only available in China. That doesn't apply to most of us (well maybe half the world wink

http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/iphone-5-worlds-thinnest-smartphone-claim-in-dispute-1096941

The other things you mention sound like typical things that any manufacturer spins to sell their product and don't make a difference really. There was nothing untrue, but nothing that interesting either.

I like that they've kept it small. They said still being able to navigate the screen with one thumb was the goal and that makes total sense.

Obviously anyone can make a big screen. Woopdeedoo. Packing the technology into a tiny package is much more technologically impressive.

All-new design. The thinnest, lightest, fastest iPhone ever.

Thin, sleek, and very capable.

It’s hard to believe a phone so thin could offer so many features: a larger display, a faster chip, the latest wireless technology, an 8MP iSight camera, and more. All in a beautiful aluminum body designed and made with an unprecedented level of precision. iPhone 5 measures a mere 7.6 millimeters thin and weighs just 112 grams.1 That’s 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than iPhone 4S. The only way to achieve a design like this is by relentlessly considering (and reconsidering) every single detail — including the details you don’t see. Learn more about the design of iPhone 5

Thinner
Lighter
Less Volume

4-inch Retina display. It’s not just bigger. It’s just right.

More display means more to see.

Anyone can make a larger smartphone display. But if you go large for large’s sake, you end up with a phone that feels oversize, awkward, and hard to use. iPhone 5 features a 4-inch display designed the right way: it’s bigger, but it’s the same width as iPhone 4S. So everything you’ve always done with one hand — typing on the keyboard, for instance — you can still do with one hand. On a larger canvas that lets you see more of every web page. More of your inbox. More events on your calendar. Even more apps on your Home screen.

It’s more vibrant, too.

This isn’t just a larger display. It’s a larger Retina display. At 326 pixels per inch, it has a pixel density so high your eye can’t distinguish individual pixels. And as stunning as the Retina display is on the iPhone 4S, this one gives you 18 percent more pixels for an impressive 1136-by-640 resolution. Colors get a boost, too, with color saturation that’s 44 percent greater than before. So with iPhone 5, the games you play, the words you read, the images you see, and the apps you love look and feel incredibly vivid and lifelike. For big-time entertainment, iPhone 5 lets you watch widescreen HD video in all its glory — without letterboxing.

iPhone 5 is nearly 9 millimeters taller than iPhone 4S, but it’s the same width. So it’s just as easy to type with one hand.

Ultrafast wireless. Connect to fast data networks. The world over.

LTE. The right way.

You rely on your iPhone. So a thin, light design and outstanding battery life are important to you. But so is a fast data connection. LTE wireless technology is built for speed, but adding it to a phone can create bulk and drain battery life quickly. iPhone 5 does LTE the right way — optimized for better battery life and designed for ultrafast connectivity in a thin profile. The very things you want most from your smartphone.2

Next-generation cellular and wireless connectivity.

iPhone 5 supports more networks all over the world. That includes advanced networks such as HSPA, HSPA+, and DC-HSDPA. Browse, download, and stream content at ultrafast speeds. Dual-band 802.11n wireless connectivity accelerates your Wi-Fi experience, too — up to 150 Mbps.3

A6 chip. Performance and graphics up to twice as fast. With battery life to spare.

Faster CPU performance.

With the new A6 chip, just about everything you do on iPhone 5 is noticeably faster — up to twice as fast compared with the A5 chip. So apps launch, web pages load, and email attachments appear almost instantly.

Faster graphics.

The A6 chip also offers graphics performance that’s up to twice as fast as the A5. So you can power through graphics-intensive apps and games. And enjoy higher frame rates for smoother, more realistic gameplay.

Even better battery life.

Not only is the A6 chip custom designed to be fast, it’s custom designed to work with iOS 6 to be extremely power efficient. So even at its accelerated speed, iPhone 5 has more than enough battery power to last throughout the day — up to 8 hours of browsing on a cellular connection, up to 8 hours of talk time, and up to 10 hours of video playback time.4

LTE Browsing Time
Talk Time
Video Playback Time

All-new EarPods. Completely re-engineered from the sound up.

A breakthrough for ears everywhere.

Just like fingerprints, ears are unique parts of the body. Which means earbud headphones fit differently on everyone. So rather than use the speaker as the starting point for new headphones, Apple designers and engineers started with the ear. They tested over a hundred prototype designs on hundreds of people. All with the goal of creating earbuds that rest comfortably inside — and stay inside — a variety of ear types, while also producing quality sound. The result is a breakthrough for earbud headphones: Apple EarPods. They’re unlike anything you’ve ever seen or heard.

Enhanced audio on iPhone 5.

Apple EarPods are just the beginning of the improved audio experience on iPhone 5. It’s designed with three microphones: one on the front, one on the back, and one on the bottom. The front and back mics work together to achieve beamforming — a technique that helps iPhone focus on sound from the desired location for clearer audio. New noise-canceling technology reduces background noise. So when you hold iPhone up to your ear in a loud room, you hear what matters most: the voice on the other end.

iSight camera. The world’s most popular camera now captures more of the world.

Panorama.

iPhone is the most popular camera in the world. For good reason. Photos look so stunning, it’s hard to believe they were taken with a mobile phone. And everything that made the iSight camera in iPhone 4S the world’s favorite is now on iPhone 5 — and then some. The new panorama feature lets you capture everything from a family reunion group photo to a jaw-dropping shot of the Grand Canyon. With one smooth motion you can shoot up to an impressive 240 degrees. The gyroscope, A6 chip, and Camera app work together to create one seamless, high-resolution panorama up to 28 megapixels.

Even better features.

The Camera app also features improvements including 40 percent faster photo capture, better low-light performance, and improved noise reduction. So you can snap more shots with more detail and clarity than ever before. View photos taken with iPhone 5

Enhanced HD video recording.

Imagine sidesplitting, adventure-filled, must-see flicks produced by you and shot on iPhone 5. Record stunning 1080p HD video with the iSight camera. Improved video stabilization helps prevent shaky footage. Face detection for up to 10 faces means everyone can have a moment in the spotlight. You can even take still photos as you record, so you can capture small moments while shooting a big one.

FaceTime HD camera.

You use the front-facing camera on iPhone 5 to make FaceTime video calls. And now those calls can happen over a cellular connection if Wi-Fi isn’t available.5 The quality of FaceTime video calls is so surprising, it’s as if you’re in the same room with whoever’s on the other end. You can also use the front camera for taking self-portraits or recording 720p HD video.

All-new Lightning connector. Smart. Durable. Reversible.

A new way to get connected.

Making iPhone 5 thinner and lighter required a pivotal change: replacing the 30-pin connector with something newer, smaller, and better. Introducing the Lightning connector. It features an all-digital, eight-signal design that’s significantly more durable than the 30-pin connector. Another brilliant feature of Lightning: It’s reversible. Which means there’s no wrong way to plug in the cable.

Lightning to 30-pin Adapter.

Soon many iPhone accessories will be Lightning compatible. But if you have one that depends on the 30-pin connector, you can still connect it to your iPhone 5. Simply use a Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (sold separately).

Maps. Take a turn for the better.

Maps designed by Apple.

The new Maps app gives you a better way to find your way. Map elements are vector based, which means graphics and text are incredibly sharp, even when you zoom in. Pan around, and you’ll instantly notice how smooth and responsive Maps is. Need directions from Point A to Point B? Maps not only shows you how to get there, it tells you — out loud, turn by turn. Maps also gives you real-time traffic information and reroutes you to avoid delays. For a completely new perspective, switch to Flyover and explore major metro areas from above with photo-realistic, interactive 3D views.6Learn more about Maps

Siri. Even more of what you’re asking for.

Just ask Siri.

Siri is the intelligent assistant that helps you get things done, just by asking. Talk to Siri as you would to a person: “Do I need an umbrella?” or “Any modern art museums around here?” or “Where’s the closest ATM?” Siri not only understands what you say, it knows what you mean. It figures out the right apps to use to find the right answer. Then, just like a personal assistant, Siri provides you with the information you need.7

New Siri features.

With iOS 6, Siri understands more questions, knows more answers, and gives you a lot more to talk about. Ask Siri about sports scores and stats, where to eat, what movies to see — even ask Siri to make Facebook posts or tweet for you. And Siri is fluent in more languages, so it does more things in more countries. Learn more about Siri

iOS 6. The world’s most advanced mobile operating system.

The foundation of iPhone.

At the core of every iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch is iOS. It includes all the built-in apps you use every day and all the intuitive technology — like Multi-Touch and Siri — that makes iPhone so advanced.7 With every free iOS update comes even more capability for your devices. You’ll find the latest version, iOS 6, already installed on iPhone 5. So right out of the box, you get more than 200 new features to make the things you do every day even better. Learn more about iOS

iCloud. Your content. On all your devices.

Everything you need. Everywhere you go.

iCloud is built right into iPhone 5. Just turn it on and you’ll have instant access to all the things you need, whether you’re on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.8 New features in iOS 6 let you do even more with iCloud. Share the photos you want with the people you choose using Shared Photo Streams. Locate, lock, and recover your misplaced phone easier than ever with Find My iPhone. Browse a web page on one device and pick up where you left off on another device using iCloud Tabs. And that’s just for starters. Learn more about iCloud

Built-in Apps

iPhone 5 is a remarkable device. The same goes for the apps that come with it. Because they achieve the perfect balance of everything you need to do with everything you want to do — from emailing your boss to filming your road trip — on the large, 4-inch Retina display. Learn more about built-in apps on iPhone 5

From the App Store

There are over 700,000 apps available from the App Store — many of them free — to make iPhone more capable, more indispensable, and more fun.9 Sign in to the App Store with your Apple ID, browse lots of categories, and download any app you want. Learn more about apps for iPhone 5

AirPlay

Put what’s on your iPhone on your HDTV. AirPlay wirelessly streams content from your iPhone to Apple TV, so you can watch it on the big screen.10 Turn on AirPlay Mirroring, and whatever you do on your iPhone — tapping and scrolling, playing a game, even typing — appears on your HDTV at the same time. Learn more about AirPlay on iPhone 5

AirPrint

Print right from your iPhone over Wi-Fi with AirPrint. There’s no software to download, no drivers to install, and no cables to connect. With just a few taps in Mail, Photos, Safari, or iBooks, you can send whatever’s onscreen to an AirPrint-enabled printer.

That's fine, but Schiller said at the announcement that the iPhone 5 is "the thinnest smartphone in the world". And it isn't.

The markets it gets sold in don't make a difference. Not when you can buy 'em online for £400 and have 'em shipped to you in a matter of days.

Oppo are technologically very impressive. They just launched the world's first 1080p device, with a pixel density of 441, compared to 336 on the iPhone 5. Now THAT is innovation.

iPhone 5 Preorders Break Record: 2 Million Plus in 24 Hours

Apple sold more than two million iPhone 5 smartphones in the first 24 hours it was available for preorder. The figure was more than double the record set by the iPhone 4S.

Apple sold more than 2 million iPhone 5 smartphones in the first 24 hours that it was available for preorder. This was more than double the record set by the iPhone 4S nearly a year ago, Apple said in a Sept. 17 statement.

AT&T announced the same morning that customers had ordered record numbers of iPhone 5s over the weekend, making it the fastest-selling iPhone the carrier has ever offered.

After its Sept. 12 introduction, the iPhone 5 became available for preorder Sept. 14, just after midnight on the West Coast.

"Customers ordered more iPhones from AT&T than any previous model both on its first day of preorders and over the weekend," said AT&T.

On the Apple site, stocks were depleted afte...ailability, and Apple changed the ship date on the site from Sept. 21 to "two weeks."

"Demand for iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders will be delivered to customers on September 21," Apple said in its statement, "many are scheduled to be delivered in October."

Nearly a year ago, Apple announced that preorders for the iPhone 4S exceeded one million phones in the first day, breaking the record of the year before—orders for more than 600,000 iPhone 4 smartphones after its release.

Verizon Wireless and Sprint also began offering the iPhone 5 Sept. 14, though, neither shared news about their sales efforts just yet.

Research firm IHS iSuppli has forecast strong sales for the iPhone 5, writing in a Sept. 13 research note that phone will be a "major success in the market, helping to drive Apple's smartphone shipments in 2012 to 149 million units, up 60 percent from 93 million in 2011."

IHS added that Apple will begin selling the iPhone 5 with just over one week left in its fiscal third quarter, so that most of the sales will impact its fourth quarter, making it "Apple's biggest quarter for iPhone sales in history."

Despite Android's dominance in the marketplace—according to Gartner, more than 64 percent of the mobile devices that shipped during the second quarter ran Google's Android OS—IHS calls Apple's iOS "still the most valuable mobile content marketplace."

The iPhone 5 features a 4-inch display (on the diagonal), a first for Apple, which has maintained a 3.5-inch display on past models. The larger display will accommodate older applications, though Apple has offered developers a fix, for a more perfect experience.

"The new iPhone will support old apps via the addition of a ribbon so as to preserve the original aspect ratio," wrote Jack Kent, an IHS senior analyst. "While this will maintain the experience, it does fall short of the flawless hardware-software integration that a vertically integrated model like Apple's should provide."

Also imperfect will be the iPhone 5's support of Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G technology—another first. While Apple's support for LTE will help increase support for the technology, according to IHS, only European operators with 4G deployments on the 1,800MHz band will be compatible with the iPhone 5's LTE capabilities.

"This will affect the competitive position of carriers," said the IHS report. "Those that have LTE networks compatible with the iPhone 5 will benefit at the expense of those that either have not launched LTE or have LTE networks that operate on incompatible frequencies."

Apple will begin selling the iPhone 5 at 356 U.S. Apple retail stores at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21.

"iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we've ever made," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of marketing said in a statement, "and we hope customers love it as much as we do."

You probably won't be able to get it right away, but if you place your order, they should be able to give you a loaner phone in the meanwhile. Nothing fancy but shrug

I ordered mine too and I can't wait! razz

I think I WILL have an Iphone 5 tomorrow. smile
