Whatcha doin' tonight? I just bought a ticket to see Doctor Zhivago at the local Sundance Theatre. I've never seen it on the big screen.
I hope I can stay awake. It starts at 7:30 and has a running time of over three hours. I'll probably be a zombie at work tomorrow. Good thing it'll be Friday. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Hopefully getting into New York at a decent hour. I'm sitting at O'Hare right now and my flight is delayed. Harumph.

O'Hare? What took you west? My brother and his wife were coming to Chicago to watch the Iowa/Northern Illinois football game last weekend, and I was able to get a ridiculously cheap flight here to join them*. After that, we spent the past several days in Iowa, visiting our mom. *The ridiculously cheap flight came via Spirit Airlines. As God is my witness: Never again.

I wondered if you'd gone to Iowa.
Too bad about the flights, though. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I've never actually seen Doctor Zhivago. It's definitely on my list, but whenever I consider it I'm not ready to invest that much time.
I don't have any plans tonight. I may just stay in and make dinner. However, my bf's cousin's dad passed away yesterday. She is more like his sister and is his bff to boot, so we may be spending time with her this evening. He spent all last night at her house, not sure whether she'll want company tonight or want time alone. |

I'm always amazed when I hear that people haven't seen the "big" movies. (For example, a few years ago, I dragged a friend who'd never seen Gone With the Wind to a screening.) Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course - it just feels weird through my classic film buff lens. I must've seen Doctor Zhivago at least a dozen times over the years.
At any rate, it's wonderful. And now that I've actually seen it "as intended," my opinion has only risen. Funny, though - Sweetie saw it for the first time a year or so ago (when I bought the DVD). And while he liked it, his main reaction was, "Well, that wasn't a very happy ending." I told him, "Honey, it was the Russian Revolution. Nobody got a happy ending out of that."
As an aside, sometimes I really miss the days before home video. Before VCRs, the UW had numerous film societies that would screen all kinds of movies in lecture halls on campus. While the sound wasn't fabulous, it was a chance to see a lot of movies on the big screen. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
