Eddie Murphy, Shawn Ryan Shopping 'Beverly Hills Cop' TV Series

The former star of the 1980s franchise would appear on-screen in the Sony Pictures Television small-screen adaptation.

Axel Foley could be coming to the small screen.

Sony Pictures Television, along with The Last Resort EP Shawn Ryan and star Eddie Murphy are shopping a small-screen version of Paramount's Beverly Hills Cop, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

As first reported by Vulture, the pitch is being taken to broadcast networks Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.

Murphy, who starred in the three films as a crafty Detroit detective working in Beverly Hills, is attached to have an on-screen role in the spinoff. Murphy and Ryan would executive produce the project, which is described as an hourlong crime procedural with comedic elements. Murphy would appear in the pilot and a few episodes throughout the first season, according to Vulture.

Speaking to Rolling Stone in November, Murphy confirmed that there wouldn't be a fourth movie in the franchise and that he was interested in telling a different story about his former alter ego.

"What I'm trying to do with Beverly Hills Cop now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley's son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit. I'd do the pilot, show up here and there. None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force this premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn't be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing. It was always wrong," he said at the time.

It was unclear if the SPT-Murphy-Ryan pitch being shopped this week was similar to Murphy's November idea.

The three films -- released in 1984, 1987 and 1994 -- have collected more than $1.5 billion in worldwide box office grosses.

I know Eddie had Kevin Hart or Brandon T. Jackson as his choices for the lead role. But I think he can easily do it himself again..

But this TV show concept feels right? spit

I wish Eddie would just concentrate on a stand up tour instead.

How about Eddie go back on tour. It has been forever since he has been on the road. BHC3--could've kept that.

"Might as well enjoy the view..."

CBS Orders Pilot Of Eddie Murphy’s ‘Beverly Hills Cop’

September 5th, 2012 -

The movie 'Beverly Hills Cop,' which proved to be a blockbuster hit decades ago, is heading to CBS as a television pilot, and if you like it, and CBS executives like it, the pilot just might become a TV series.

It was pitched to four major broadcast networks, by creator Shawn Ryan.

According to AceShowBiz:

"Serving as "a continuation of the iconic 'Beverly Hills Cop' universe," [the TV pilot] centers on Axel Foley's blue-collar police officer son Aaron who works to "take down the criminal elements of the rich and famous, while simultaneously trying to escape the shadow of his larger than life father."

Eddie Murphy, for all the '80s babies who remember, played the starring role of Axel Foley in all three films of 'Beverly Hills Cop.' He will play the same role in the pilot (as Aaron's father).

"The potential series has been described as "a buddy cop show" and will be an hour-long crime procedural with comedic elements," according to AceShowBiz.

Looks like the whole Murphy clan is moving to the regularity of the television space.

Eddie Murphy's doing 'Beverly Hills Cop." His ex-wife, Nicole Murphy, is in television as a VH1 reality show star, and her new fiance--Michael Strahan--just landed himself a gig on 'Live!' with Kelly Ripa.

All in the family.

Thoughts? Share below. Tell whether you think Eddie Murphy will fit seamlessly into television, after having done movies for so long, and standup at the beginning of his career.
