There is a name for you, ladies, but it isn't used in high society... outside of a kennel
That was Miss Crawford's BEST role ever, and my fave George Cukor movie
Have to admit though, I couldn't keep up when I watched that film for the first time, they spoke too damn much and FAST

I just watched this last week--one of my all time favorite movies with one of the best lines from one of my all time favorite actresses, Bette Davis: "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night!
Also, for those who haven't seen it, I think this movie was one of Marilyn Monroe's first appearances. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

One of my favorites.
I've been told more than once by people that they can't watch B&W movies!
Think of what they're missing:
"All About Eve"
"Raging Bull"
even "Truth Or Dare"

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The Thin Man series had some absolutely sparkling dialogue...

Why are they all from yesteryear??
Does this mean there are no modern movies that are considered "witty"?

I'm sure there are some that are. But not nearly as many as there used to be.
Wit requires dialogue - not car chases and shoot-em-ups. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Well then, how does wit translate into 3-D IMAX??? By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

If you have wit, you don't need gimmicks like 3-D. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

No car crashes, no explosions, and no CGI?
This is Hollywood we're talking about, not Cannes.
On a serious note, I've heard so much about Moonrise Kingdom (especially here on the Org) that I'm going to go see it this weekend. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Hollywood doesn't do wit, anymore. They don't think there's any money in it.
One would have thought that The Artist would have sent them a message, but wit is exclusively an indie cinema thing.
Moonrise Kingdom is wonderful. Of course, I love Wes Anderson films, so I may be biased. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

From my recollection this is one of the most recent examples of modern wit in cinema:

I absolutely adore Betty Davis. I haven't seen this, I know I'm missing out
Also, I love B&W films.. I actually prefer them She Don't Speak..But She Remembers

Wit today can more easily be found on TV:

I own All about eve. It's classic Bette Davis. And its the first appearance of Marilyn Monroe in a film, where as her first appearance on TV was the Jack Benny Show. Yes, I'm full of useless knowledge.
99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Whit Stillman's films have great dialoug, this is his most well known flick(and my fave)...
His newest film "Dasmel In Distress" is pretty witty as well.
