The American lady who does my hair here in Europe always has reality shows playing at her place for entertainment to keep us from getting bored in the chair; she had a clip of this show on last week, and all I remember is that the dad was remarking how their favorite summer pastime is to cruise for roadkill, pick it up, clean it, butcher it, and grill it for those oh so special summer memories. I was done. Bless their hearts, but I fear this family is about 2 steps and one bad decision away from becoming "Deliverance" re-enacted.

There was a show on that featured red-neck weddings or something I don't think it improved the sterotype.

I loved Jeff's bits. I think he was making fun of how the media depicted Southern whites.

i lived in georgia for over 5 years, and i never met or knew anyone like this. the people i knew were educated, fun, and always dressed well.

Well, there are different types of people in all regions of America. It would be a fallacy to think or purport that any society is made up purely of the educated who dress well and are "fun". There will always be a grimy underbelly to any location that exists on the planet, and unfortunately ours is exploited via reality tv for cheap entertainment.

People who think you're crazy for saying this are deluded in their media-fed brains to think anything else. Because that's exactly my point. It's stereotyping to the nth degree and to be honest I'm tired of it. I live in North Carolina and I describe my white residents in Saratoga as just American. Some of my family say rednecks but I don't see it, at least in the media sense of how they view someone as either redneck or "white trash". I get insulted when the media attacks my state for instance or any southern state for whatever purpose it serves them and then they claim shows like this and the shows morningsong mentioned are played on CMT (which proves they're just as deluded as BET in deploring their own people for profit) prove it for some reason.

I was born and raised in the South and still live there and I have no problem whatsoever with the South being stereotyped as rednecks because the majority of the South are rednecks. If you don't believe it, just look at the way they vote. They don't call them "red states" for nothing. The red is there to match their necks and as for rich Republicans, hell I just call them the Beverly Hillbillies (rednecks with money). As for those of us that aren't rednecks, Northerners will realize that once they talk to us and get to know us. But as for rednecks being stereotyped, I'm all for it because I can't stand those trashy fuckers. They're the ones that made my life a living hell growing up so if the rest of the nation wants to label them as ignorant and laugh at them, I'm all for it because the rednecks are just simply getting back some of what they love to dish out to people that aren't trashy and racist like they are.

People aren't born rednecks, being a redneck is a state of mind and how you carry yourself and your beliefs. There's a difference in a Southern accent and a redneck accent. Hell, even Southern blacks have their own version of a Southern accent, the accents just come from growing up in the area. You can have a Southern accent and still talk educated and intelligent. There's a difference and you can hear the difference in just a regular Southerner and a Southern redneck because the redneck just sounds damn ignorant and you can usually hear a hate tone in their voices towards minorities and anything that is considered "liberal". They just carry their self in a different manner than a regular Southerner would. They celebrate being low class and trashy and are proud of it.

In one small southern town in Georgia where I used to spend summers (my grandmother's house) there was a guy who walked around all kinds of fucked up, he looked all crazy and once when I was in the video store he was demanding this and that (mind you, he looked like a crazy redneck hobo) but he was acting all, "Don't you know who I am?" and the girl beside me in line leaned over and said, "Do you know who he is?" (with reverence) and then went on to tell me how he was the richest guy in town because he had somehow touched a live power line, the power company's fault somehow, and had sued for millions. Oh. Respect.

The media's issue is that they wanna make anyone who comes from the South as like that: "backwoods, backward thinking dumb asses who are purposely ignorant". It's guys like the ones you discuss that gives the region the disrespect it doesn't deserve.

True. But what I do sort of think is sad is that this "Honey Boo Boo child"'s family- this is their shot to finally have something with this show, and there's such an uproar about it that I honestly hope they don't take this away from them. I'm always for the underdog and this kind of money will change their lives if this show is successful. Of course, I'm not so sure Honey Boo Boo child's mother will do the right thing with it- but let's hope she does.

Vainandy, you ain't NEVA lied. But that 'redneck mentality' isn't limited to the South. I've dealt with mfers like that during my 50-plus years living in New York & Long Island. They're just as trashy and racist as their southern counterparts.
