But yes, I have met the...*cough*...other side of Southern society. Most of them I found when I was visiting West Virginia and the deep South, but that's beside the point.

The south is home to some of the most prestigious universities in the nation, as well as to some of the grandest lifestyles and pockets of wealth in the world, so overall I don't think it's matter of the accent leading people to believe differently. I personally am not into the trailer park variety of shows that are booming in popularity. I think the point is that these type of people exist , and I'm guessing they want to grab their piece of the American dream via 15 minutes of fame much like the rest. The same way that those crazy sidepiece women on all the VH1 urban shows exist, and the out of touch, nouveau riche women on Bravo shows exist, and so on and so on. There are clueless, batsh** crazy nut-a-butters spanning every color, class, and creed of America, as well as the bright and educated who dress "well". They don't call us the great "Melting Pot" for nothin'... and now it looks like television has become the new level playing field acting as this century's California Gold Rush and leading people to riches if the have the guts to brave the journey.

It all kind of makes me wonder how much further do we have to go until the Reality show genre implodes.

On Yahoo's entertainment page this show is now listed at the top of the 12 worst reality shows ever created . Seems like they had a few doozies listed there actually: one show actually called "Are You Hot?" where a panel of judges pick your half naked body apart with a pink laser pen, and then another where women compete for wedding plastic surgery? WTH???

This is a comment i found onyoutube when a comedian i watch talked shit about the show. And this was a top comment with 72 likes!

I actually love that show. I think they are a fabulously close family, I also think that Honey Boo Boo is super mature. E.g. when her pig was taken away from her, she didn't scream or have a tantrum on the spot. She said she had to have some alone time in her room. That is an astounding amount of self-awareness for a little kid.

... Honey boo boo is a mature kid? right cause pre-k kids saying for a dolla i'll make ya holla is ever so classy. ONLY in America

Nah, I doubt it. I think he was just looking beyond the aspects of rural culture we often find mortifying and saw something deeper in terms of human behavior and how they relate to one another. They do actually appear to be close knit but it's hard to see that beyond the shock of hillbilly customs and general lack of accepted social graces. But he was right about the kid having the occasional moment of being very clear and aware.

You end up hoping that somebody will actually get a clue and use that couponing money leftover from groceries to put her in school and expand her little mind. When her pig was taken away she cried like the dickens, suddenly composed herself then told her mother in all seriousness, it's okay it'll be better for him to have another home with a family that'll take better care of him, I think I need some time alone in my room. And waddled her little tail away . Seems like when the kid isn't all hopped up on fat cake and go-go juice she has the occasional moment when she can be articulate and even witty.

This show is like one of the worst cases of "children are a result of their environment" because you see everything unfolding in front of your eyes. There are so many ways a kid can go when their minds are young and fresh and like sponges, and if this child had the right resources and formative experiences she could have so much promise to have a bright life. I think the child actually isn't stupid, but she's certainly being lulled into idiocy because here family clearly doesn't know better.

And in the same vein of ignorant southern redneck shows, a show has just come on t.v., I don't know what network, called "hometown security" or some shit- and it's filmed, in MY TOWN! I just watched this shiz the other night and the main character, this awful woman, I kept thinking, "How do I know her? whos is this?" so I turned to my boyfriend and said, "I've seen her before....who is that?" but I knew I didn't know her- and while he was racking his brain to think of where we knew this woman, I realized, She's a goddamn Squidbilly! That's where I've seen her before! She's that big blog of jelly muttering ignorant southern redneck jargon- - they've given a GD squidbilly a show! What the hell? It will probably be a big sucess
