Rumor Control: Debbie Allen’s Tryin’ To Bring Back ‘A Different World’

Posted on August 25th, 2012

"A Different world" Season 6 intro (Featuring Jada Pinkett Smith)

Don’t act like you wouldn’t watch it. Debbie Allen took to Twitter the other day encouraging us all to help make a reunion happen.

She’s got people talking about it and it seems most are excited to see the crew on TV together again.

What do you think? Should Debbie Allen keep trying to make this happen?

Maybe the beautiful wife of Will Smith Jada Pinkett Smith will make a special guest appearance....

It never aired, not sure if it will ever air. They shot 2 episodes and a special back in April/May.

I'll take whatever we can get, at this point. I'm so sick of the crap that's on TV nowadays, I barely turn my tv sets on anymore.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

And if this "re-boot" of A Different World is true, then it should rightfully get the BOOT too. A reunion special would be fun, except they've kind of done that already...a few years back they did like a semi-reunion type thing on TVLand with a few of the cast members but not all of them. It's just best to leave shows as they are...in the past.

Dallas seems to be having some decent luck with their return, so it's hard to say.

I would be open to watching it if it returned. It's so hard to find any scripted shows that aren't celebrating or over enthusiastic in portraying family & relationship dysfunction on television (cough, cough, "For Better or Worse"). Last year, the show "Reed Between the Lines" was a godsend and one of the better written family shows with clarity of theme and purpose (and they've got the critical acclaim to prove it), but these days we're so accustomed to being fed toxic relationship porn on tv, the masses dismissed it as boring. You can't keep anyone's attention these days in the ratings game unless you throw smutty interactions in their faces. Put a show on with mature, educated characters, who employ problem solving and communication skills to meet and overcome challenges of life, and people turn their noses up at that kind of programming. Go figure. shrug

Don't get me wrong, I totally get what you are saying and I agree, there should be more positive sitcoms/non-reality shows to be viewed on television...seems these days more and more pointless reality shows are developing out of thin air, however, "Reed Between the Lines" was a show, in that I loved it's concept and what it was trying to do, but it just wasn't funny. I watched one episode and gave it another chance by trying to sit through a 2nd one but I just couldn't. It needed some better writers, producers or something. My point is this, yes we need better shows portraying more positive figures and characters, but they also need to grab the viewers attention as well to keep it going. From what I hear, the female lead (can't remember her name at the moment, Diana Ross' daughter) has left the show and now BET is going to have the show written as if she and Malcolm-Jamal Warner's character are separated and he's left to fiend for the kids. That's kind of ridiculous being that defeats the whole purpose of the show in the first place, but oh well, I didn't watch it anyway. shrug

I just think if Debbie Allen (who I think did an excellent job with "A Different World") wants to create another show similar to "A Different World" then I'm for it, I just don't understand why folks have to go back into the past with shows that worked and try to recycle it to fit into today's times. Just because it worked back then doesn't mean that it will work today. I just think they should quit trying to REMAKE everything and just come up with new shows/concepts altogether.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Interesting!

Tracee Ellis Ross (who plays Carla Reed) was actually one of the producers of this show, so I'm wondering what the hell (is the real story that) went on behind the scenes with BET that may have prompted this shocked...and you're right, the premise of him being left to raise the kids is completely ridiculous: the foundation of the show was anchored in the fact that this was a loving, functional couple that communicated well while maintaining balance and stability in the family unit. For them to do an unexpected 180° turn with now everything being totally opposite for season 2 is really talking down to the audience, media, and blogging community that supported what the show stood for in the first place. Far as I'm concerned, they should have just cancelled it instead of trying to underestimate the intelligence of the viewers like that. I'll check out a new episode or two when they come back, but it likely won't give me what I was drawn to and supportive of in the first place, especially since now they're going to add sidekicks to the cast and whatnot... so much for having good family shows with teachable moments disbelief

As for the possible remake of A Different World...it seems that the tv waves are so overtaken by reality tv and profits they turn, it's dang near impossible to get scripted shows on television. The networks just aren't willing to take a chance and invest the money required to do scripted shows fresh out the gate, so I guess now they're being lazy, & trying to cash in on nostalgia by re-booting old series that were popular. It's kinda messed up. But I'm so desperate for shows portraying normal people on tv lol , I' be willing to give it chance.

Yep here's the article link: http://www.essence.com/20...the-lines/

Have you seen ABC's "Scandal" with Kerry Washington and Columbus Short? It's a great show...I was so excited when it was renewed for a 2nd season as well, since they are so quick to cut shows these days. If you haven't seen it yet, see if you can get a hold of some of the first seasons episodes somewhere online (if not on the ABC website). The 2nd season starts September 27th. It's not a family show per se, more political, but it's a very good show nonetheless. thumbs up!

I'm totally over remakes. I agree MissFee. They just need to leave one of my favourite shows alone period lol I don't believe it would ever match up to the original and we would always compare. The characters are irreplaceable. I still watch A different world, and it's as fresh and funny and as entertaining as it was 25 years ago. I had to dvr all the reruns and save them on dvds since they refuse to release a complete series dvd. It was a masterpiece. Just make new shows! I'd love it if she made a total new show for this generation, find vibrant new talent and make it great. It can be done. It's amazing how you can hardly find anything worth viewing on T.V anymore, compared to decades ago. What happened to all the writers?

Btw in regards to "Reed Between The Lines", great concept but horrible writers and absolutely zero chemistry between Tracee and Malcom and the kids. Bored me to tears really. Tracee and Malcom are great and charismatic actors in their own right but it just wasn't working. Was suprised it was even renewed. BET sucks ass anyway. If a great show is ever written, stick it on any other network except that one.

I read that Tracce had accepted to shoot a pilot on NBC while the show was on hiatus. And she wasn't available for RBTL when she was needed and so she was let go. Then NBC ended up dropping the pilot leaving her with no job. Something like that.

^^^ Actually this is what she said about it....

Tracee Ellis Ross Explains Her Sudden 'Reed Between The Lines' Departure

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

"It was that BET hadn't decided if they were picking up the show yet or not [...] During that time when they didn't know, I was offered a really amazing pilot for NBC, and BET graciously allowed me to go and do it [...] Then the timing got complicated and there was a need to move forward. [BET] had to figure out how to deal without me because I wasn't available. But it's not because I wanted to leave."

Words from Tracee Ellis Ross addressing her sudden exit from BET's Reed Between The Lines, in an exclusive with Essence magazine.

It was exactly 1 week ago when we confirmed that Ms Ross had left BET's freshman scripted series. Specific reasons weren't given at the time, but, in a released statement, Ms Ross did express her love for the series and its cast, calling it one that "I believe in and care about."

My guess was that her casting in the new NBC women's prison drama Bad Girls, adapted from the UK ITV series of the same name, might have had something to do with it. And it looks like it did in some part; however, as Essence reports, NBC actually DID NOT pick up the pilot for Bad Girls, which means it's likely dead. But we'll see.

Recall that Kym Whitley and Jurnee Smollett were both cast in Bad Girls as well.

So what does this now mean for Tracee, since season 2 of Reed Between The Lines is moving on without her AND, NBC didn't pick up Bad Girls?

Her IMDB page doesn't list any upcoming projects (at least, non that's been announced); however, don't completely write her off Reed Between The Lines; don't be surprised if her character does return in the future - assuming the series is even still around if/when that happens.

Quite ironic Lisa posed with the class of 1988 cast and Debbie Allen. Real ironic actually... (though she did re-appear in the episode where Dwayne and Whitley finally fell in love).

That would be boring as hell. The show was about a college and we were college aged at the time. Bringing it back would be like bringing your 45 year old ass into the high school or college you went to and hanging out with the kids that attend it now.

A show about a college these days would be boring because most college aged kids these days are boring. We knew how to party and they don't. Plus, damn near everything on TV is geared toward college aged kids these days and you see how boring those shows are so why add another boring college aged show to the list?

I love reunion movies with the original cast coming back for a reunion. Kinda like they did with "The Facts Of Life" a few years ago. Everyone came back except Jo and you got to see what the characters Blair, Natalie, and Tootie were doing in their adult lives since they graduated.

But when you bring a show back and it's not about the original characters, then it's no longer the same show and shouldn't be called the same show. Hell, I was getting bored with "A Different World" in it's later years while it was still on the air because it's a show about school The original characters graduate and move on and when you watch these new characters, you feel like you're some dumbass that flunked school and are still there with all these youngsters. lol
