OK.

So the password is not (blank) nor is it 'password'.

I checked out the results of my Google search & everything requires that I either have a "password reset disk" or that I purchase some password recovery tool.

err

why not? unless you guess the password, the only way you can reset the password is by booting into something else first. you can remove the drive and stick it in another pc and access it that way, but that's more hassle than downloading a tiny file and booting from a cd/floppy/usb. you could have reset your password within 5 minutes of reading my first post about it, but days later you still haven't done it. you don't have to pay a penny either

try that, its 500mb to download, burn and boot from a cd and the link above walks you through it

Believe it or not I don't own a USB stick, so I'll have to go get one and try that.

Am I correct in thinking that you're trying to guess the user password - i.e. the password that you would enter when booting normally?

What you need to do is reset your user password while logged on as Administrator, and to do that you need to boot up in safe mode:

Turn on laptop, quickly press F8 (it might be F10 either, so try both - or it might actually say - some will give you a 'Press F2 for BIOS, F10 for Safe Mode' type message when they're booting) and put your laptop into safe mode.

When you come to the log on screen, an Administrator account will appear (with any luck the Administrator password is not set - most people don't bother). Click on the Administrator account, do not enter a password, and once you are (hopefully) logged onto this account, you can reset/change your password of your usual user account by using Control Panel> User Accounts > and Password.

Then you simply restart your machine and now you will be able to log on to your user account with the password you have just set in the Administrator account.
