I think I understand your point, Paisley. Though the scenario you have given is not very likely to happen, there has been a similar situation in e.g. Middle Europe after World War 2. There were lots of people who did return home years after the end of it and my boyfriend's grandmother, for example, never remarried as she wasn't sure if her husband might ever come back... So a situation similar to the one you asked about did happen to many people not too long ago.
