pregnancy today

this is the actress from sabrina the teenage witch, remember that series? anyway, what i noticed about this picture is her massive smile. what kind of message does this give people? that pregancy makes you happy, or if you are happy you are preganant? i find that disturbing. just because you get pregnant it doesn't make you any happier than anyone else. being pregant is a mistake. this photo reminds me of the mona lisa, what was leonardo da vinci saying with that portrait and do people know why it is so fascinating and famous. well to me, the mona lisa's smile is like this photo. to me when i see a pregnant woman smiling is, i ask myself, with a smirk of my own, IS SHE REALLY HAPPY NOW? does it take pregancy to make you socially agreeable and socially acceptable as a woman, does being pregnant mean you are really, i mean really happy. i mean after all, i have never been pregnant, but i can hardly be so deperate to be happy that i would go done that path. i accept myself, when no body else does. that should be held in high esteem. not pregancy.

So now you're criticizing people who are already pregnant? Famous people you don't know personally but you assume know everything about just from a picture?

You need help..

If you don't want to get preggers.......... be celibate, a nun, tubal ligation or simply keep your legs crossed.

Men and women or same sex partners sometimes want to start a family, nothing wrong with that.

Pregnancy is a wonderful experience if you ever decide you want kids someday.

Some women do want to have kids and so yeah, when they get pregnant, they're genuinely happy about it.

With some I imagine it probably is them just caving in to societies expectations of what being a woman supposedly means - that you MUST pop out babies otherwise you fail at life.

I know people are going to clown the shit out of you for this thread, but like with the other thread you started too, there's a grain of truth to this one as well.

Not everybody has kids because it's really what they want. A lot do it because they think that's just what they're supposed to do, or because of societal expectations/pressure. You know it, I know it, and they know it.

But of course it's just easier to deny that and pile on and clusterfuck the person who points out the elephant in the room, right?

Just like the truth is that really knowing how life is and how it can be very difficult, that in some ways, choosing to bring a human being into it to more than likely suffer a great deal at some points in one way or another, is inherently selfish.

It's easier to not acknowledge all the uncomfortable truths and underpinnings of this stuff and just throw rocks at you, right? So...RUN, Flyorra. lol

You have stumbled upon an interesting point, although it has nothing to do with pregnancy. Why do people smile in a photograph? Even if they aren't particularly happy at all, smiling when the photographer says cheese is almost involuntary.
People in the olden days never did. My grandma's wedding photo from the 20s looks positively morose. Was it once the world wars were over that people relaxed? Was it once they realised the camera couldn't steal your soul? Smiling wasnt always a friendly gesture - other primates bare their teeth to appear threatening when afraid, scientists suggest we used to do that too. Some of us still smile or laugh nervously when we aren't comfortable.

My point is, and I don't agree with you too much on this topic, is that she might not be "happy" at all since a smile in a photo is generally not genuine.

I wish people still smiled in photographs! lol I was just the other day thinking about how it seems that, in such a large percentage of photos I see on Facebook, the person is either sticking their tongue out (I mainly see teens with pierced tongues doing this, though not all have piercings and those I have no idea why they feel the need to hang their tongue out their mouth) or making that ridiculous "duck mouth" lip puckering, which I guess? is supposed to make them look sexy or as if they have big plump lips?

I don't like to smile in photographs because I have a crooked smile and I hate it. biggrin

If the O.P.'s words the ones you posted above, then we could exercise an interesting dialogue on pregnancy and society.

But to shit on a picture of Sabrina the teenage witch because she's both pregnant AND smiling (which the O.P. states as being "disturbing") and furthermore flat-out claims that getting pregnant is a "mistake"...well you invite not-so-serious replies.

No one is running away from any "uncomfortable truths" because quite frankly they haven't been really presented to us. We're dealing with a thread that shits on smiling pregnant women.

Oh and I forgot to add to my point that advances in modern dentistry in the latter 20th century undoubtedly had an influence on people being willing to show their teeth on record.

I was thinking it's because back in the olden days having your photo taken was not a common occurance and people perhaps wanted to appear thoughtful...I dunno. But I noticed that before photographs we had portraits painted and the subjects seldom smiled in those either. Maybe having our likeness recorded is so commonplace now that attitudes towards it are a lot more relaxed?

As for the OP, I don't get what's disturbing about the notion that a pregnant woman might be happy or how it somehow implies unhappiness on the part of non pregnant women...very odd interpretation.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
