I have a question....When on a Beach Vacation.... When you are on a overseas or out of the country beach vacation where you don't have a car with you....what do you do with your passport, cash, credit cards, and other valuables when you are snorkeling, scuba diving, or other water activities? Do leave your stuff in the hotel safe, hide it in your room, or do you try to keep in with you? Can you really trust hotel safes? Has anybody ever had their stuff stolen from a hotel safe? I wanted to know what to do the next time I head to the beach. [Edited 8/2/12 9:36am]

I guess I was thinking of a situation where you were on a trip say over seas where you don't have a car and you have a passport, cash, credit cards on you, etc.

some people say stay all all inclusive hotels...but they are usually way too expensive. I once tried just charging everything to my room...but at the end of the trip the hotel tried racking a bunch of extra expenses on my room bill that wasn't mine. Beside when your drinking how can you keep track of all of your drinks, etc. especially when you stay for a week or so?

I always thought of something like that but I didn't know if they made anything like that. I've been looking for years. I guess I will look harder. I have never seen anybody with anything like that when snorkeling, etc. so I wondered what they were doing with their stuff.

Most hotels have a safe nowadays that you swipe with your room key and enter in a private code (at least, the last 2 hotels I've stayed at had them).
For the actual beach (if you want a credit card with you or a few dollars) you can get one of these at most souvenier shops;
They work!
I had one when I went snorkeling in Cancun...it floats so it can be a little annoying (when you have the one with the cord that you wear around your neck). By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Isn't there usually a safe in your hotel room? That's where my stuff goes.
Or if the hotel has a safe, i'd keep it there. I don't trust myself to keep that kind of stuff on me.

And even as a fanny-owner i'm sure I wouldn't be able to fit all that up there, let alone stop it from falling out!

It's funny but on the news the other day one of the helpful tips was an empty
with the lid cut in such a way to just slip keys, cards, cash or whatever in them.

Ex-Moderator | I've always just leave stuff in my room, not even in a safe.
In Amsterdam my phone was stolen out of my hotel room, out of my bag, once. But this was a long time ago and it was a cheap phone and it didn't even work in the country. It was a little sad. They didn't bother taking anything else.
I've never had another issue. I guess I've been lucky.
In Thailand I left most stuff in my room but even trusted leaving cash and my book and stuff on the beach while I swam. I was alone, so didn't have a choice. Just made sure not to bring too much with me. |

She is giggling because the word fanny means something totally different to a Brit.
A fanny is your front bottom, not your back bottom in the UK. It can cause some confusion during conversations.

I laugh at fanny packs, too, but more because they look idiotic than for language reasons!

That's what I was going to say. I saw that the other day on line and thought it was clever. I'm firmly planted in denial
