Best country to live

I've seriously been thinking about moving to another country, because of the horrible bad weather over here in Holland. I don't have an exciting career, nor relationship or children.

So, I'm as free as a bird to pick up my stuf and settly somewhere warmer.

The problem is, that I don't know any alternative country with similar just law system, social system and ingrained aversion of violence.

I think Canada and Norway are the only two countries that match Holland's political culture. And these two countries also have nature (non existing in Holland). However, it's not that much warmere in Norway or Canada.

Any suggestions about best country to live?

Yeah, but the reason to leave will be warmer days. So, I'm looking for a sunny country.

Nice weather, swim in sea, live outdoors that kind of thing

You know what. folks always knock it, but I'm going to say Florida (USA).

There are 43 natural fresh water springs for excellent kayaking and canoing.

The weather is always warm except for 2 months in winter (and even then it only gets to be freezing about 3 nights a year).

And the sand is white as hell, water is aqua blue, and the people are generally pleasent and in good spirits.

.........but, if that's not your thing, I would also say that Singapore is AMAZING, if you don't mind high prices. Everybody speaks English (it's the official language), and there's a HUGE amount of diversity due to the fact that 50% of the workforce is foreign. The diving around Singapore is amazing, and Thailand is only an hours flight away, and Australia not much further. It's really a great place to live for a couple of years.

I'm finding more and more that there is a vibe and excitment in Asia that doesn't exist in the same intensity elsewhere---overall, Asians are optimistic, and the foreigners that live there are content and happy.

I've seen a documentary about Singapore, that actually made me think it was a good place to life.

Is it easy to get a job overthere? And why do you say 'for a couple of years'?

Can a stranger easily grow a social support network? Even a white, feminist, agnostic woman?

I've been a few times now, and each time I enjoy it immensely.

I do prefer Bangkok though, because of the Thai people.

In Singapore, yes.

The job opportunities there abound due to the fact that their birthrate doesn't match the demand in the job market.

I say for a couple of years because it far too much like the west for my comfort. It's too "familiar". Every major American or British retailer can be found there to include restaurants and the like---also, everything is in English.

I find myself wanting to flee to Bangkok everytime I'm there---and trust me.... I LOVE SINGAPORE.

It's very very safe, clean, and upbeat there. The citizens are all nice people.

I'm moving to Vancouver in a couple of weeks. It has Canada's best climate and is approximately on the same latitude as Paris, but with the mildness of being located on the coast. You'd love it. It's a gorgeous city.

Florida is great if you like HOT weather. You can also (right now - thanks to the real estate disaster) find a house for the price of a BMW. Depending on where you look, of course.

However, the summer moths are intolerable for anyone used to a cold climate. You'd be living in air conditioning all the time.

I'd like to offer you Long Island (New York).

We have beaches. We have nature. We have culture. We have NYC a train ride away.

True, we have snow, but generally it's not as bad as West & North of NYC. We rarely get blizzards here. The first three winters after I bought a snowblower, it never snowed enough to use it.

AS A GENRAL RULE...we don't have earthquakes, we don't have hurricanes, we don't have forest fires, we don't have monsoons, we don't have tornados, and we don't have droughts. Every once in a blue moon we'll get extreme weather, but it's a rarity as opposed to a common occurrence.

It can be expensive to live here and housing is becoming an issue...but all-in-all it's a great place to live (ergo the population boom).

Plus you have ME. batting eyes

The week before last I had to call the trapper out to our neighbourhood. A 9 foot gator was trying to find his way back to the lake. Because someone had just put a fence around their yard, poor gator got stuck and ended up on a neighbours porch.

Others on the street were saying there were 2 gators wandering the neighbourhood. The trapper said anything over 4 foot gets trapped and killed.

We have had lots of rain lately so we have seen more animals roaming.

If you don't like gators or reptiles, this isn't the place for you.

Seriously, though. Compared to Holland, Canada and Norway our social system simply doesn't measure up. We have different values. Those things are important when choosing a place to live.

Not that great if you happen to be a foreigner, to be honest. At least you need to have secured a job for yourself before arriving (good luck with that). The living expenses are very high and the salaries aren't necessarily that great.

It's just harder to live as a foreigner in any country. I tried to live for a while in London (UK, you know) over ten years ago and it was just hard to find my place there. You know, if I happen to lose my job in Finland I am eligible for benefits at the very least. If that happened in London I'd have to find a new one as soon as possible or end up on the streets. It's pretty much the same scenario with health care in many places.

Don't listen to novabrkr. In England we love foreigners. We'll give you benefits and housing and health care for free. There's a Somali family living on benefits in a house in the same neighbourhood as Sting don't ya know. There are a few downsides. No ones got a job so there's more crime. The governments got rid of the police so if you're mugged there's no one to catch 'em. And if you're stabbed in the mugging there's no nurses or doctors to treat ya. But apart from that it's great.

Searching to find what we lost along the way.
