"Beasts of the Southern Wild" a new indie movie

This one is getting incredible word of mouth from friends. I bet even Prince is gonna chime in on this one. It won big at Sundance this year.

I have to wait until the 20th to see it in Detroit. I h ave faith in it. I even made a facebook event to get friends to go.

synopsis:

Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in “the Bathtub,” a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink’s tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he’s no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack—temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink’s health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.

Hushpuppy is not just the film’s heroine; she’s its soul. Beasts of the Southern Wild exists entirely in its own universe: mythological, anthropological, folkloric, and apocalyptic. Benh Zeitlin’s first feature (a Sundance Institute Feature Film Program project) employs a cast of nonactors—reflecting its grassroots production—to fiercely portray the bond between father and daughter in a world where only the strong survive. Standing defiantly at the end of the world, Hushpuppy affirms the dignity of telling their own story: that they were once there. . .

Quvenzhane Wallis (leading character) seems so endearing, and seems to be a great young actor.

after seeing the trailer, i'm for sure going to check the movie out. thx for posting the thread.

A friend of mine saw a preview screening of this and she was totally blown away. I'm intrigued since I love apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic scenarios. Apparently there's supposed to be a fair amount of "magic realism" in it too and that's not my cup of tea but it's not like it's a deal-breaker either. Thanks for reminding me to put this one on my list!

The performances were great considering none of the actors had any prior experience. I thought the aurochs subplot could have been woven into the main story better, but that's a minor complaint. Maybe I'll feel differently after a second viewing. As of right now, I give this movie a 4/5.

Have been hearing the buzz about this one for a few months. Waiting (and hoping) that it's going to make its' way to the art house theatre circuit over here.
