Philanthropic couple, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, took their giving to another level last Friday when they visited Ethiopia to witness a drilling of a well that would bring clean water to a village of more than 400. In 2010 the couple raised over $109,000 by sacrificing birthday presents and asking people to make donations to charity instead. They encouraged others to do the same, and promised to bring the top fundraisers on their trip to Ethiopia, and were able to raise an additional $679,960 the Water Charity, according to the organization’s website. Last Friday Will and Jada were able to see the funds go to good use as they watched the charity’s rig, Yellow Thunder, break ground in the Meago village, Tigray, located in Northern Ethiopia where people previously had to walk three hours for water. In less than three minutes the rig hit its target, and now clean water will be accessible to over 400 people in the village. Villagers were grateful and gave gifts of gratitude to the couple, according to People, and the Smiths celebrated with them by dancing and singing with members of the community. “Our trip to Ethiopia with charity: water, was an incredibly eye-opening and authentic experience,” Smith said in a statement. “It was extraordinary to meet and spend time with the people of Tigray and to see first-hand how clean water changes everything for these communities.”
