Do you think Mixed Martial Arts should be in the Olympics?

Apparently it's being discussed;

MMA to the Olympics would be a tough sell

Over the years, the Olympics adds and drops sports to meet changing public tastes for sports. The tug-of-war, hotly contested from 1896-1920, is no longer part of the Olympics. Most recently, softball and baseball were dropped. With MMA growing in popularity and global reach, is there a chance the International Olympic Committee would include mixed martial arts, the sport made popular by the UFC, on its docket?

It's a possibility, but unlikely. Here is what MMA has on its side in a push to get the sport Olympic status.

International flair: MMA easily fulfills the international requirement. The sport is popular in the U.S., Japan, Thailand, Brazil, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia. It's growing in many other parts of the world, which is important to IOC leadership.

Beginnings of international federation: In April, MMA officials announced the formation o...Foundation, a global group with the aim of streamlining and standardizing the sport.

But MMA has plenty of obstacles, as well.

No standard drug testing: Currently, MMA drug-testing in the U.S. is handled by state commissions, which have different requirements and rules. The UFC recently announce they will create a better drug-testing policy that will reach farther than the states' requirements, but they still have a long way to go to be at Olympic drug-testing levels. Plus, that's just in the United States. The IMMAF will have to corral drug testing around the world.

Another sport has to go: The cap for Summer Olympics sports is set at 28, and the 2016 Olympics will field 28 sports. To open the door for MMA, another sport will have to be cut. MMA will also have to battle against sports like softball, karate and squash to earn an Olympic home.

Bad reputation: And here's the big one. Though MMA has instituted rules and safety precautions, it is still a bloody sport that was once called "human cockfighting" by John McCain. The sport has grown much since the days it was forced underground, but a reputation is hard to shake. The IOC, who has a reputation for being stuck in their ways, will be tough to convince.

Personally, I say YES.

MMA is the sport of TODAY. It's exciting, it's tough, and it's growing.

If you can have effin' trampoline gymnastics at the damned olympics...then why not MMA?

Well....

...actually...

...the only drawback I see is that people maybe aren't ready to see THIS at the Olympic games;

shrug

Nah, you already have the most of the seperate components of MMA in the olympics (Boxing, Judo, Wrestling, Karate, Taekwondo etc.) So I don't really see that point. shrug

No.

Just Martials Arts.

Keep it like it was meant to be.

I like MMA don't get me wrong but imo the art needs to be like it is, authentic, and performed like that at the Olympics.

OK...so what I'm gathering here is that the naysayers are mostly against it because it's not "refined" (I don't know if that's the proper term)?

I was thinking 'NO' because it can get bloody/gruesome.

I vote yes. But make MMA suitiable for the Olympics by having all fighters wear protected head gear, just like they do in boxing. And also, use the same rules they have in UFC.

Should they get rid of Decathlon then?

However, I don't really see it as a meeting point of different martial arts myself. It's really just kickboxing and wrestling combined. The competitive forms of judo, karate and so on are quite different from it as well.

I don't see a reason why it couldn't be in the olympics, but I don't care that much if it isn't either. lol

Yeah, okay. It's true that the form of boxing they have in the Olympics is different from "professional boxing" that you can see on (pay-per-view) TV. MMA might not ever fit the Olympics, because it's just too violent in the end.

You wanna see some real violence in the Olympic games though? Watch the Ice Hockey games during the Winter Olympics!

well, i dunno. wrestling, for sure. but the kind of street fighting bodty slamming drawing blood stuff maybe not so much.

maybe there should be two olympics. one classical the other modern. the modern version could have events like karaoke singoffs, hot dog eating contests, hair weave speed tests and stuff nod

Yes, IF they did it they would have to prevent the gore which is what people seem to love so much about the sport.
