Besides, she has her own dough as well. Anybody remember in the early 80's how she used to cover all the black magazines for being the richest black woman in American showbiz? Diana was always known be be a shrewd businesswoman, I can't imagine she didn't invest her hundred million wisely. Add her business success to producing 2 heirs to the Naess fortune and you're right, homegirl is straight. lol

Exactly.

It's a loooong stretch to go from being an Academy Award nominee

to plop yourself into a vehicle by the man who's most famous for one character that he clearly needs to retire:

Like someone else already suggested, he needs to just send a fruit basket and call it a day lol

I liked his plays and the Madea character. I didn't care for the "Meet The Browns" play though because Madea wasn't in it. The Madea character is basically the only thing I liked about his work and without her to liven it up and give it some outrageousness, it bores me.

With the movies though, he sold out. The movies were nothing like the plays whatsoever. The storylines were altered, the Madea character didn't have as much of a humorous appearance as she did in the plays and she didn't act near as country in the movies as she did in the plays either. Then he went after the biggest name actors he could find for the movies. He should have just used the cast of his plays. I can see maybe selling out for the first movie to get your foot in the door but he continued it. And then there's the background music which was the biggest sellout. In the plays, he had a band playing gospel music and singers singing gospel songs. I'm not into gospel music myself but some of the performances in the plays were pretty good and tolerable. I understand that in movies, characters don't just break out into song unless it is a musical but he could have used the gospel type music as his background music kinda like the TV show "Amen" did. Instead, he chose to sellout and use that God awful neo stool bullshit that I can't stand to be in the same room with.

Do You Know
Where you're going to?
Do you like the things?
That life is showing you
Where are you going to?
Do you know?

Do you get?
What you're hoping for?
When you look behind you
There's no open doors
What are you hoping for?
Do you know?

Once we were standing still, in time
Chasing the fantasies and feeling all nice
Chasing the fantasies and feeling all nice
You knew how I loved you, but my-spirit was free
Laughing at the questions
That you once asked of me

(Chorus)
(Musical Bridge)
Now looking back at all we've had
We let so many dreams just slip through our hands
Why must we wait so long, before we see?
How sad the answers to those questions can be

(Chorus)
Do you get?
What you're hoping for
When you look behind you
There's no open doors
What are you hoping for?
Do you know?

boxed Sorry got a little dramatic there. You can't see me but I did.

Timmy, at that time I was about 12 years old. Chile, Diana Ross had licensing coming out of her ass with her name on everything you could imagine. The woman even designed clothes for Simplicity patterns: they used to sell them at all the fabric stores and in the pattern section at Woolworths. Hell, I even remember buying Diana Ross pantyhose for my mom for Mother's Day once falloff. Diana set the mold for singers and actresses on how to put your name on anything that moves off a shelf and make a fortune from it lol

See? People quickly forget that. It's like no one really knows HOW influential Diana was to today's entertainers who are doing exactly what SHE did 30 years ago. lol Most singers in her generation didn't really care about business or being an entrepreneur but you could tell she was. Of course being a pioneer, you pay a heavy price for that but yeah she definitely did the damn thing. nod lol

I posted early that Diana only got $150,000 for 20 years of hard work (and a little personal tenure with the boss) so she got screwed up too... Diana got wealthy by becoming a businesswoman/entrepreneur in 1981 onwards.

Call me Ms. Ross, left Motown. Ms. Ross will be forever be known in part in signing one of the biggest recording contracts (at the time) in history, 20 million from RCA. That 20 million wasn't for recording, it wasn't given as a stipulation for recording a set number of albums... it was a start up signing bonus. If you figure in the numerous US/World tours and merchandise for which artist get all profits, she was able to make millions.

The story goes when Ms. Ross was offered 20 million by RCA, she told Motown she was stay with them if they matched the offer, Motown demurred. Call me Ms. Ross walked... good for her.

Yes, M'am she did. I remember magazines covering it alot because that was a pretty amazing sum of money at that time. This is a cover from Ebony in 1981 nod

Berry Gordy was trying to keep his monies... I think that's what it was. He didn't wanna give Diana $20 million because that'll be too much to give an artist on his label plus he was trying to maintain Motown's independent streak (which was the #1 reason most Motown albums were not certified with gold and platinum awards). Berry was secretly still reeling from Stevie's $13 million deal but had to because Stevie was actually selling albums. Berry and Diana often argued over song choices and this led to a lot of the albums she put out to be half-assed promoted by Motown's staff unless there was a hit that they could boast album sales from since the industry was slowly moving out of being a singles-based industry at the time. This plus the $150,000 she got from the label and also everything that she had during her Motown tenure that she found out were only leases from Gordy caused Diana to change her entire MO. The decision to move out of Motown and sign with RCA was a best decision on a financial standpoint.

I vaguely remember parts of this article too (I remember reading it at a baby sitter's house; her family always them in the magazine rack. My parents always subscribed to JET instead) lol

This article broke down more of the 10,000 things Miss Ross had her hand in at the time; interestingly enough I remember her "Anaid" production company well. It always showed up as the last logo of anything she seemed to do on television at the time.

Michael Jackson - Ebony Magazine [United States] (November 1983)

the rest of this can be found in the Ebony archives on Google Books, in the November 1983 issue. The full article starts on page 23 ( I think).

[b]Same here, I saw his plays and thought he was very funny, I even liked family reunion and diary movies, but then I got tired of movie after movie of the same damn thing. Some downtrodden lady finds some ridiculously goodlooking man to sweep her off her feet who loves God and don't want the pussy until marriage. How unrealistic is this? Black people need to do better than this coonery of a man with all these stereotypical characters parading around as if they have validity. And Precious is no better. Yeah I said it!
