MIAMI -- A witness says a naked man chewing on the face of another naked man on a downtown highway ramp kept eating and growled at a police officer who fatally shot him to make him stop.

"The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, `Get off!'" Vega said. "The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin."

Vega flagged down a Miami police officer, who he said repeatedly ordered the attacker to get off the victim. The attacker just picked his head up and growled at the officer, Vega said.

As the attack continued, Vega said the officer shot the attacker, who continued chewing the victim's face. The officer fired again, killing the attacker.

Miami police have released few details about the attack, other than confirming that there was a fatal officer-involved shooting. The name of the victim, who was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, had not been immediately determined by authorities, said Detective William Moreno. Messages left Monday for a police spokesman were not immediately returned.

A spokeswoman said Monday that the hospital would not be releasing any information about him.

A surveillance video camera from The Miami Herald building nearby captured images of the men's naked legs lying side by side after the shooting.

Vega said the victim appeared gravely injured.

"It was just a blob of blood," Vega said. "You couldn't really see, it was just blood all over the place."

A man is in critical condition at a Miami hospital after a naked man attacked him on a MacArthur Causeway off-ramp and ate 75% of his face, authorities say.

A man whose face was eaten by a naked attacker in Miami is fighting for his life as authorities try to piece together just what sparked the horrific incident.

The identity of the two men remains unclear, although some reports suggest they may have been homeless men living beneath the MacArthur Causeway, which connects downtown Miami to South Beach.

The gruesome attack went down in broad daylight Saturday afternoon, authorities said. The two men are visible in surveillance video captured from a nearby building, but it is unclear if the entire horror show was recorded.

The pair appeared to be fighting, said Larry Vega, a Miami resident who first witnessed the nightmarish scene on an off-ramp by Biscayne Boulevard, which is near the offices of The Miami Herald newspaper.

The attacker was shot dead by a police officer, described as a ‘hero,’ after refusing to stop eating his victim’s face, authorities say.

“When I looked forward, there's a guy on top of another person, eating him up like, just tearing, tearing his face apart,” he told Local 10 News. “It’s going to take some time to forget. I never thought I would see someone else eating someone. It was really, really horrific.”

He was “tearing up pieces of his flesh, you know, his ears, his nose,” Vega said. “He was tearing it up and throwing it away... it was really a horrific scene.”

The father of three alerted a police officer “that a homeless man was killing another person by biting and ripping his face to death.”

Vega said the cop ordered the man to stop, but he did not listen. He then drew his gun, but “the guy just stood... with pieces of flesh in his mouth and he growled,” he told WSVN 13 News.

The officer, who was not identified by police, then shot the Hannibal Lector wanna-be several times.

“Based on the information provided, our Miami police officer is a hero and saved a life,” Javier Ortiz, spokesman for Miami police’s Fraternal Order of Police told the Miami Herald.

Larry Vega, who says he grew up in New York, told Local 10 News the vicious attack was the most ‘horrific’ thing he’d ever seen.

The victim, who lost about 75% of his face, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to WSVN 13 News. He remains in crticial condition.

“There was blood all over, you couldn’t even distinguish a face,” Vega told Local 10 News, saying the victim appeared to be like the zombies seen in AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”

Authorities suspect the face-chomping madman may have been using a new, potent type of LSD.

“What’s happening is whenever we see that a person has taken all of his clothes off and has become violent, it’s indicative of this excited delirium that’s caused by [an\] overdose of drugs,” Armando Aguilar of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police told WSVN 13 News. “What’s happening is inside their body their organs are burning up alive.”

WTH... seriously, this type stuff is what causes policemen to get post traumatic stress syndrome and lose their damn minds dealing with these crazed men.

The horrific attack occurred Saturday and was only stopped after a police officer shot the attacker several times, killing him.

Augilar said he suspects the attacker, identified as 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, was under the influence of "bath salts." Four other drug use instances in Miami-Dade bear resemblances to Saturday's attack, he told WPLG.

"It causes them to go completely insane and become very violent" and take off their clothes, Augilar told WPLG.

Dr. Paul Adams, an emergency room physician at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, told CNN affiliate WBFS that the drug makes users delirious. They exhibit elevated temperatures and extreme physical strength, Adams said.

“I took care of a 150 pound individual who you would have thought he was 250 pounds,” WBFS quoted Adams as saying. “It took six security officers to restrain the individual.”

Adams said users have been known to use their jaws as weapons, according to WBFS.

According to a 2011 report from the Na...Drug Abuse, bath salts contain amphetamine-like chemicals.

"Doctors and clinicians at U.S. poison centers have indicated that ingesting or snorting 'bath salts' containing synthetic stimulants can cause chest pains, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, agitation, hallucinations, extreme paranoia, and delusions," according to the NIDA report.

In October, the Drug Enforcement Administration made possession of the stimulants in bath salts, Mephedrone, 3,4 methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and Methylone, illegal under an emergency order. The order lasts for a year with a possible six-month extension.

The stimulants have been placed under restrictions or banned in 37 states, according to a DEA press release.

and when i read about this kind of out of control psychotic violence, and remember that users of bath salts are likely driving around on the same roads that i'm using, well, i just .... i....

I just do not understand what kind of drug can make someone do this. People have been using LSD for a long time and even with all the bad trips I never heard of anything like this. I believe there is more to this story and amphetimines in bath salts seems fishy to me.

On another subject...I wonder if THIS will be on The First 48?

(CBS/WFOR/AP) MIAMI - Miami police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the bizarre scene of a naked man biting the face of another nearly naked man on Saturday to come forward, reports CBS Miami.

An officer came across the men on the MacArthur Causeway shortly after 2 p.m., when police responded to a 911 call about two naked men fighting on a bike path near the Miami Herald building.

The officer tried to stop the fight and ordered the assailant to stop chewing on the other man's face. When he refused to stop and reportedly turned toward the officers and growled, the officer fatally shot him. The medical examiner identified the dead man as 31-year old Rudy Eugene.

Eugene's victim, who has not been identified, is in critical condition at a hospital.

Eugene is believed to have been homeless. His last address is a home in North Miami Beach. The current residents said they didn't know Eugene, but neighbors remember him.

"The only thing I remember was he was a quiet boy," said Micheline Barret.

Barret said Eugene moved out several years ago, but she never forgot him the boy she used to give rides to when he needed it.

Eugene reportedly had several previous run-ins with police, mostly for drug related offenses, trespassing and resisting arrest without violence.

Ives Eugene, 55, told the Associated Press that he was Rudy Eugene's uncle, and described his nephew as a "nice and hard-working" man who washed cars at a local dealership.

In a telephone interview, Ives Eugene said his nephew had asked his girlfriend to borrow her car, but she said no.

"So he rode the bicycle, and he never came back home," Ives Eugene told the Associated Press.

Rudy Eugene's ex-wife declined to speak about her ex-husband or the alleged cannibal incident.

Girl, you KNOW that's what people are saying down here...especially since the attacker is Haitian.

Between the hoo-doo and the santeria people ain't necessarily safe in their graves down here. Every other week there's a grave robbery in some areas.

So far the cops suspect bath salts, pcp or something, which is probably the case but there is a large population of people here who believe in and practice voodoo, santeria, obeah and such who think otherwise.

The media isn't helping by calling this a zombie attack either. Some of the public comments on the story are off the chain.

Not sure what has been posted in this thread yet, but from what I just read elsewhere they're saying the guy was hopped up on "bath salts". Look it up if you have questions about it. Side effects include hallucinations, super human strength when angry and greatly increased internal body temperature. Evidently it can feel like your organs are cooking, which is why they're assuming the ATTACKER had his clothes off. Didn't give a reason for why the victim, who was a homeless man, had his clothes off. They did say he was missing a lip, an eye and part of his cheeks, though.
