It doesn't change what has happened, but it can be the start of the healing process. The victims have realized an even greater strength they have, than to have just survived the abuse. They had the strength and courage to stand before the man that traumatized them, hurt them, and point a finger at him and say "He did this to me". They have the knowledge that they have stopped him from doing this to any more children.
A part of the pain of abuse is, as a victim of abuse, accepting the blame and the shame of the abuse. These young man have stepped forward and have essentially said, "I am not to blame for this and this is not my shame to carry. Those belong to Sandusky." There is a sense of closure in that, in knowing he is no longer walking the streets, no longer hurting any other young boys, and a release of the self-blame and shame and placing it where it belongs.
Having that kind of closure does not mean these young men have much further to go in healing these wounds, because they do have a much longer road to travel in order to heal completely. But they can stand a little taller, knowing they were able to face the nightmare of their childhood and ensure that nightmare is not visited onto other boys by the same man. These young men are truly heros for coming forward, for not letting their fear hold them back, and for the strength they have shown themselves to contain.

This is the best news I've heard since the beginning of this story and trial. He's going right where he needs to be.
I don't care if he's 70 or not..they're going get him in jail.

While I wouldn't rule out Sandusky being sexually assaulted in some manner or other, I don't think rape in the conventional sense is as prevalent as some people may think in prison (certainly not saying it doesn't happen, especially in regards to convicted pedophiles). I think it's more likely he'll be found with his head bashed in, or hanging at the end of a makeshift rope.
Although he's just as likely to spend many miserable years alone, with his thoughts, in solitary confinement for the rest of his life. In either case, he won't be raping any more boys.
More disturbing than all this (to me) is the fact that there are many more thousands of pedophiles out there tonight, who have never been caught, or suspected, currently victimizing more children as we participate in this discussion at this very moment.
Nevertheless, tonight, Sandusky is one less.

Rape happens in prison. A lot.
Sandusky will not be in general population.
His sentence would be ended FAR too soon if they put him in general population.
He'll be in permanent solitary confinement, the same way death row inmates are held. He'll have a regular cell to himself that he'll get out of for an hour a day. The rest of the time he'll be locked up.

Glad to hear the verdict-wasn't the trial kinda speedy, though? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I don't know why everyone is so sure he'll be raped and/or killed in prison. Legally, neither should be allowed to happen. [Edited 6/23/12 9:04am] It's prison, they aren't in there for doing things legally

Research has shown that a pedophile typically has abused approximately 150 children before they are caught the first time. This is the reason the recidivism rate is so high with pedophilia. They know they were able to do it multiple times without being caught, before getting caught with the one child. And yes, the thought of the many pedophiles and child abusers that are out there doing this to children right now, is very disturbing. Statistically, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18. Of those that are abused, and extremely high number of those are abused before the age of 10. It boggles the mind what people are capable of doing to children and I lived through it myself. I know the hell of it and to know even one more child has to live that hell makes me sick.

It should also, by definition, be a controlled environment. I guess people can't imagine someone wishing that on them if they went to jail or prison. Presumably in a belief that they will never be there. But innocent people serve time in jail/prison too. Regardless of what a person is convicted of being abused/killed in prison should not be part of their sentence. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I read last night that he could actually end up in general population and he'd have to stay there until he was 79. Pretty sure he won't make it to 79 if that's the case. If he does he'll then get transferred to an old folks prison.

And yet that's exactly what being sentenced to time in an underfunded, overpopulated state prison in the U.S. is, abuse. The day-to-day is abusive, to the extreme. I have some past acquaintances in San Quentin and Pelican Bay. Everything that you see in movies and documentaries about prison life, that shit is for real, only worse. That's why so few people who become part of the system are ever truly "rehabilitated".

Exactly! And if they want to get at you, they will get at you. Solitary confinement does not mean safe. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I am anti-death penalty. I am also against special protection for someone who commuted pedoohilea more than once. U get one chance with that mutherfuckin shit...ONE chance...after that...to the wolves....I have NO time...ABSOLUTELY NO TIME for these kind of shenanigans. Irrational and wrong in terms of the totality of my views...but its how I feel. I hope society finds a better way to deal with this than I do. I am not able to choose a rational solution.

^ When it comes to child rapists and pedophiles, there's never a "rational solution". Either let them suffer in jail for their actions or inject them with something and end it all.

my brother is a maximum security prison gaurd. (a super max actually) it is a very strict environment but they are dealing with extremely experienced criminals who are also extremely experienced inmates....they know the weak spots, they know how to get things done....and they WILL get to this sandusky, mark my words.

It should though. If it is not, that fault lies with the prison administration. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

IF that happens, someoone in the prison administration should be held accountable and likewise imprisoned. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Just be lucky there not crammed together in one room with no bathroom and end up having to poop and piss on the floor of the packed cell. It's disgusting but the truth is that's the way it is in some countries. Compared to several other countries, the U.S prisions have it made.

Sandusky isn't facing time in a foreign prison. To suggest being beaten, abused and raped is relative is a non-starter. Violating the law in the U.S. in regard to prisoner care is illegal and should result in more prosecution until it stops being a damn fucking joke. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Oh hell yeah. Jerry Sandusky should have been given the death penalty without parole for the damage he has done to those poor victims.

So uh guys...
What do you think about the theory that pedophiles need help controlling their urges? I read that pedophiles do not directly translate into child molestors but rather they're born that way and need extensive counselling to be proper members of society. In doing so, they'd be able to control those urges.
Or so they say. I personally don't think it's possible but I'm curious to hear what you guys have to say. The salvation of man is through love and in love. - Dr. V. Frankl
