Cooked Squid Inseminates Woman's Mouth

Cooked Squid Inseminates Woman's Mouth

Cooked Squid Inseminates Woman's Mouth (Image credit: Jackson-Moss/Getty Images)Here's one not for the squeamish, from South Korea: A semi-cooked squid inseminated a woman's mouth, according to a paper published in the Journal of Parasitology. After experiencing "severe pain in her oral cavity" when she bit into her seafood, the woman spit out her meal but continued to feel a lingering "pricking" sensation.

Doctors found that the 63-year-old woman had "small, white spindle-shaped bug-like organisms" lodged in the mucous membrane of her tongue, cheek and gums.

Despite having been boiled, the dead squid's live spermatophores, or sperm sacks, were alive and penetrated the woman's mouth. The sacks, which contain ejaculatory devices, forcefully release sperm and a "cement" that attaches the sperm to a wall.

Not to worry, calamari lovers. Most Western-world squid preparation removes the squid's internal organs, leaving only its muscle for eaters to enjoy, according to Danna Staaf, who writes the blogSquid a Day, published on Science 2.0.

Seafood, anyone?

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

Sperm are too small to be sensed or parasitical. They are single cellular. And they also only live under certain conditions. This might be one for Snopes.

There is no way in Hell I would ever eat a squid in the first place, nor it's cousins; The Snail and The Octopus. I don't even like looking at those things. Even when one comes on the TV, I can't find the remote fast enough!

But the IDEA of having my mouth inseminated by a SQUID?!?

spermatophores are not alive in themselves. It's just a shell or container. This just doesn't seem real. Sperm can't live in mouth, and spermatophores are not organisms. Sperms are not parasites, they are not animals. She couldn't even get an infection from them, because they don't infect. An allergic reaction sounds more plausible.

But if anyone can find more info then just this article maybe this would be cleared up. No pun intended.

Two cases of oral-stings by sperm bag of squid.

Source

Department of Infectious Diseases, Tokai University School of Medicine, Kanagawa, Japan.

Abstract

Two patients after eating raw squid complained of severe pain and foreign body sensation in their oral cavity. On consultation of a doctor, several small spindle-shaped stings stuck on the surface of the tongue and mucous membrane of the oral cavity were found. After all stings were pulled out, the pain was allayed and the wounds eventually healed. The foreign bodies were tentatively determined to be the sperm bag of Tadorodes pacificus. These cases suggest that fresh squids should be carefully prepared before eating them raw or "sashimi".

Stinging in the oral cavity caused by ingestion of the sperm bags of a squid: a case report.

Source

Department of Pathology, Tosei General Hospital, Aichi Medical University, Aichi, Japan.

Abstract

We present a case of stinging in the oral cavity caused by ingestion of the sperm bags of a squid. The patient experienced severe pain in her oral cavity immediately after eating raw squid. When she was examined at our hospital, we found that several small whitish spindle-shaped stings were stuck to the mucous membrane of the hard palate. A biopsy was performed, and the whitish stings were removed as well. We also performed a histological examination of the remaining part of the raw squid brought by the patient. The biopsy showed that the sperm bags of the squid had thrust into the squamous epithelium of the patient. The remaining part of the raw squid consisted of the testis and the sperm bags. After removal of all stings, the pain reduced, and the wound healed in due course. Larva migrans and anisakiasis are infections known to be caused by consumption of raw seafood. Although the condition reported here is relatively rare, doctors should also keep this condition in mind for patients reporting pain after eating raw seafood.

See these reports make it sound more realistic: like getting tiny burrs or splinters. The first article made it seem like she was attacked by live sperm that were burrowing and trying to inseminate. That is not the case!

Also the news report stated that the squid was semi-cooked but the reports from the doctors state that the person ate raw squid. Either way, if i was a squid eater i would make sure that the sperm bag was removed before i dug in.

Yeah, but I thought the proper way to prepare them was to remove their guts and beak. I'm pretty sure they do that in most places since they aren't considered edible.
