I cooked them before I went veggie. A part of my family used to go Abalone diving off the Northern California coast so I learned well how to pound, bread and quick fry several different kinds of seafood. The squid we would get came in a big box and you had to remove the guts, the beak (if they had one) and this weird clear plastic-like piece of shell/skin. Then you'd seperate the tentacles from the body portion and move on to the next step. I don't actually think it's that rare for people to be dealing with raw squid, but I don't know so much about LIVE squid that haven't been gutted being cooked and served. That's what sounds weird to me.

Like I said, it look like that restaurant didn't prepare it right at all.  |
