For a long time, I was miserable. Oh, sure - I had times where I was deliriously happy. But they never lasted. My mood was tied to my "success" in wooing and/or keeping whichever woman I was interested in at the time. I saw this as the only path to happiness.

Boy, was I fucking wrong! lol

Long story, short: I began exploring Zen Buddhist philosophy and found an excellent shrink. I started employing the things I'd learned from these places, in my life and - bingo! - I found that I was in total control of my happiness, at all times.

Since then, I have the occasional moment where I get a little down (usually due to not getting proper rest), but these are fleeting.

I now feel good 95% of the time, so I am offering this as a "feel-good" story. smile

THE END.

more than a few years ago, i was going through some very difficult times financially. i had items in storage and was about a week late in my payment. so i go to the office to talk to the manager to try to buy some time so my property would not be put on lien.

on that day, there was a line of people to pay their storage fees. when my turn came i tried to talk softly when talking to the manager about my situation. out of the blue this woman and her husband stepped forward and told the manager they would pay my fee. i tried to disuade them, however they placed the money ($109.00) on the counter and told the manager to please accept the payment. the lady looked at me and said, "someone helped us at a time when we were really in need, now we want to help you." she added, "we may never see each other again, but we can tell you are a hard working person and we feel you will return this gesture to someone else in the future."

after thanking them, i almost cried.

so now when i can, if i see someone in need, i give. nod

My oldest son is now 27 years old. I was a single mom for most of his childhood. One year, when he was around 9 years old, I had gotten him a bicycle for his birthday. His father decided to give him one for Christmas as well, so he had one at my place and one at his dad's. Several months later he came home from school, and was acting like he had done something that he would get in trouble for if he were caught. I kept asking him what was going on and he finally said, "Mom, don't get mad at me please???" I told him that I couldn't guarantee that I wouldn't be upset with whatever he had done, but I would listen with an open mind. He said, "I have a friend at school who has never had a bicycle. His mom and dad can't afford to give him one. So I gave him the one you gave me for my birthday because I have two bikes and he doesn't have any and I don't really need two bikes." I started crying because I had never been so proud of him as I was in that moment. He misunderstood why I was crying and said, "I'm sorry mom! I should have asked you first!" I explained to him that my tears were happy tears, that I was just so proud of him for showing himself to be such a compassionate, caring, and unselfish young man. He is still like that.

Hmm, I'm really glad I checked out this thread. My "feel good" story would be that, for a pop culture / fan site, the folks on here are, for the most part, relatively articulate, literate, thoughtful, engaged, witty, funny, passionate, and interesting. There are exceptions, of course, but there are enough of the good for me to always get a laugh or some interesting bit of P&R or music news or discussion whenever I visit.

prittypriss and punkmistress - SOOO happy to read about your wonderful children! I have very young children, so my journey with them has just started, but I take it very seriously. I read the book "Lighting Their Fires" by Rafe Esquith and am completely committed to raising ethical, kind, hard-working human beings. You can have all the money in the world, but if your children cause you heartache and grief, life is wretched indeed. There are many examples of that. Heartwarming to know that there are good young people in world. Props to you for being great parents too!

rodeoschro - thanks for your positivity. If you're half as talented as your daughter, that song will be a hit for sure! And btw all indications are that you're a good parent too, so props to you too.

free2b - some people would take that generosity and not give it one thought. Because they are spoiled and feel entitled. But you remember it, and repay that kindness to others. Heartwarming.

thisone - i bet it made you feel very good to give that $2. Made me feel good to read about it.

ace - a person has to be self-reflective and motivated to work on oneself, and it does make me "feel good" to know that there are folks with the courage to do it.

imago - wow! Many of your posts have delighted me. You are certainly very creative, witty and articulate. This story definitely needs to get published or filmed! I was completely engrossed.

funkafunky - simple, serendipitious pleasures! There are people with all the riches, but do not enjoy anything; perhaps a lack of beauty within prevents them from seeing the beauty without. You did not get mad and ruin the day when there was no bus- you made the day and the world better through your positive attitude.

Thanks! cloud9

Yo Ace, could you illustrate how exactly philosophy made you happier? Was it simply a learning process? Learning about human psychology and the little tricks we can play on our minds in order to get the proper hormone-cocktail flowing in our heads? Is it more than that? Have you become spiritual or have you simply learned how to use rationality to your advantage?

I've been feeling pretty depressed for quite a while now and somehow I also always had happy moments, which never really lasted. I'm depressed for three months and then happy for a week. It's become exhausting, but I don't really feel like whining. I'm fine constantly dealing with the thought of finally dying and I'm fine being annoyed by this fucking world and all its stupid people. I'd just like to check out whether being happy for longer than just a week would really change the person that I am and how I feel about the motherfuckers on this fucking planet. shrug

Cheers!
