History Greenlights ‘The Hatfields And McCoys’ Miniseries Starring Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner starring as "Devil Anse" Hatfield

Kevin Costner is heading to TV for "Hatfields & McCoys," which chronicles the infamous feud between the two rival American families. Costner and Bill Paxton ("Big Love") portray patriarchs of the duelling clans in the three-part miniseries which debuts Monday at 8 p.m. ET on History Television.
Kevin Costner who happens to be one of my favorite actor, writer, director hero, is heading to TV for "Hatfields & McCoys," which chronicles the infamous feud between the two rival American families.

me, i gotta see this because this fued has been a legendary story which has sparked stereo types of the people of Appalachia.

descendants of the famous feuding Hatfields and McCoys have tried to debunk enduring Appalachian stereotypes that were fueled by the feud for years.

“We want people to see where the families have actually gone,” said Sonya Hatfield, who lives in Belfry, Ky. “We are not ignorant, illiterate hillbillies who killed each other over a pig.”

Ever since, the feud between the Hatfields of West Virginia and the McCoys of Kentucky has been alluded to and exaggerated in cartoons, dime novels and other aspects of pop culture.

probably more than any other single event it helped to set the stage ... for many of the negative images that have persisted,” said Ron Eller, director of the Appalachian Center at the University of Kentucky.

most people that are aware of the legendary 'hatfield & mccoy fued' have only seen these derogatory images (below) that are unfairly associated with the folk of appalachia and those who live among the mountain ranges.

imo, knowing how great kevin costner seeks the truth to detail the actual history of his subjects (such as 'wyatt earp', dancers with wolves'), i feel this story will be well worth watching. if you get a chance to watch it, please offer a review. i'm so going to be watching!

People 'round these parts seem to pretty much hate Kevin Costner, so it's doubtful this thread is going to get a lot of positive responses. Personally, I dig him, so I'll check it out eventually. Whether or not I watch it this week depends on how much it gets in the way of the NBA playoffs and previously set recordings on the DVR.

Well Costner is only starring in the mini series, so how accurate it is has nothing to do with him. I've read that the writers and producers do play loose with some of the facts, the romeo and Juliet bs, but do keep it somewhat historically real.

But honestly having some relatives that are actually Hatfield's most of them just kinda roll their eyes when its brought up. Unfortunately in the backhills of the applachians this kind of stuff happened more than would think. This one is just famous.

Because it went on for so long. As you said, shit happened. But these fools killed at least ten of each other's family members over a period of thirty years or so. I'm pretty sure that didn't happen all the time. lol

Cool about the family connection. Did any of them go on Family Fued? lol

okay, it's pretty much obvious that kevin costner is not as admired here as i thought. however, i do respect and like kevin. he's an earthly pioneer in that he continues to go where other actor/director/ producers fear to tread. imo kevin truly believes in his-self against all odds.

The History Channel made its own history with "Hatfields & McCoys." The miniseries drew the biggest audience ever for a nonsports event—twice.

More than a century later, the storied feud is as much about American mythology as it is a tale of Appalachian blood vengeance. The saga came on the heels of the divisive Civil War, which killed more Americans than any other military engagement and led West Virginia to secede from Confederate Virginia. The hostilities were never just one incident, but escalating grievances that included pig theft, turf arguments, broken romances and murder. And sometimes, Americans just like to take sides in a feud.

Hatfields & McCoys

imo, i strongly admired the strength of the women of that area in the space and time of the Hatfields and the McCoys. and if you ever get a chance listen to the female vocalist of these times. their voices were beautiful.

also many women from appalachia made some of the most beautiful lace creations, also known as "tatting." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Tatting manual by Anne Orr

most of america seems to turn a blind eye when it comes to appalachian history and the good they have done for the u.s.

i'm very glad kevin costner did this story, not for the fued's sake, but for giving exposure to this culture.

the good people of appalachia chose to live their lives off the land. they were very poor, however they were true survivors.

the following is a dvd that explores the appalachian history and culture.

APPALACHIA: A History of ...and People

i enjoyed the series from a historical pov. thanks kevin.

Honestly, he's pretty widely hated here. lol I'm one of the few people who has expressed liking a good number of his films.

H&M was quite good. I was very pleased that so many people gave it a chance the first night and then decided to stick with it to the end. cool

I watched it this weekend, and really enjoyed it. I'm a history buff, so this kinda thing really interests me. I think Costner does his best work in western/period pieces like this... and he is really excellent in this.

I give it thumbs up!

White people in general are hated and mocked freely on this site, daily.

Why would you assume anyone registered here would watch a show about white people?
