Anyone Remember A Different World?

So today i caught some re-runs of a different world!!

The gym in my new apartment complex has satellite TV... Which is nice since i only have internet lol

But man! i remember my mom used to watch this show & living single every time re-runs came on. This is actually a really good show!

I watched an ep where Dwayne, Has a dream Whitley is running as the female present. And that he is treated as a woman is usually treated in these aspects. I thought it was a clever play on the politics of the time & also the politics of women VS men in the world.

Yep! while my dude was in the hospital last week, I existed on a marathon of episodes from "A Different World" and "Gimme A Break" lol Retro sitcoms are better than anything that seems to be on American tv today, I just love them!

About 50 episodes in my queue. It's criminal that show isn't on DVD. It brought the HBCU experience to Middle America. It was a ratings beast, thanks of course to Cosby's lead-in in large part but it was a solid show.

Ron Johnson is one of my favorite TV characters ever.

I know my parents love me

Stand behind me come what may

I know now that I'm ready

For I finally heard them say

"It's a different world (mm-hmm)

From where you come from" (yes it is now yeah)

It's a different world

Here's a chance to make it, oh

If we focus on our goal

You can dish it...we can take it yeah

Just remember what you've been told

It's a different world, oh yeah (it's a different world)

It's a different world (it's a different world)

Hmm, from where you come from

Ooo-ooh, from where you come from!

----

Yeah I remember very well. lol Great show. nod Oh and Aretha singing the theme song was the best version of the theme song by the way. razz

Oh fuck yes!!! That's my all time favorite sitcom of all time!!!! Even though I have the majority of the episodes on tapes and dvd's, I still watch when I catch it on TVOne. nod Minus season 1 with boring ass Lisa Bonet, that show was hilarious and still has me dying laughing to this very day. nod

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

PREACH! I, for the life of me, do not get why this show isn't on DVD. Ridiculous. disbelief

And yes Ron was funny as hell. His side comments is what has me on the floor laughing most of the time.

nod Hell yes! Those were classic episodes right there, especially when Dwayne and Whitley had the engagement party and Patti and Diahann were fighting it out. popcorn

My most favorite episodes was in season 4, when Whitley finally realizes that Dwayne is the man for her, but Dwayne had found a girlfriend, Kinu.

Overall seasons 2-5 were the most funniest. The last season, season 6 wasn't all that funny, BUT funnier than season 1. It was great to see Dwayne and Whitley in their married life, but by this time, you could tell the sitcom was starting to become watered down.

Oh God season 1 was one of the suckiest seasons of any hit show of all time. Every time a Denise-era episode airs I turn the channel. Season 2 was the reason that show lasted. Real talk.

Hell yea! nod It's a wonder the show wasn't cancelled after season 1. It was corny and a big ass bore fest. Adding Debbie Allen to the executive staff is the real reason why the show turned into a more realistic direction in season 2 and beyond. nod

Yeah Debbie convinced Bill what he had for season 1 was not right for what the show was heading to. The strongest members of season 1 stayed and of course Lisa was being rebellious and that's probably a reason Bill had her cut out of A Different World and brought back to the Cosby Show and allowed Debbie to give the show its own identity.

Yeah the reason why Bill fired Lisa is because she became pregnant with Zoe Kravitz and Bill wasn't interested in writing a pregnant college student into the script of the show. So off she went.

Yeah it made sense why he kicked her off because that actually SAVED the show. Denise wasn't even the star of season 1. Jasmine was the star from DAY ONE! lol

Yeah I don't care what nobody say, Whitley Gilbert was my damn idol. I remember in season 1 when they had her dressing like an old person. rolleyes Starting season 2, she was dressing like how her character was supposed to, new outfits and purses every week, and the shoes...man she used to wear some nice shoes and blazers too. I wanted to BE Whitley. lol

I have to tell you too, that was some talented cast starting season 2. They were all talented in their own way.

I had a crush on Ron. Dude was mad funny and he was cute too. Especially in the episode when he takes Whitley out on a date because she was trying to make Dwayne jealous....lawd, Ron was gorgeous in that episode drool I was wondering why she was trying to chase after that buck toothed chipmunk with flip up eye glasses while she had fine ass Ron in front of her the whole time!!! spit

I think we need more of this, a show that had great African American characters. Smart, intelligent and down to earth. And no coonery bullshit COUGH Tyley Perry COUGH

Plus it addressed a lot of issues that where not very present in sitcoms at the time, there was one very interesting ep i remember. Where i think it was Whitley?

Found out some of her ancestors owned slaves & the episode brought up the entire ''mammy'' sterotype as well. That is something i don't think i ever saw addressed in many shows before or after.

Because that wouldn't have made sense for the screenwriters. They had to put the nerd and the queen of the burgeoisie together. lol Plus I wished they had pushed more of the love story between Ron and Freddie. smile I kept my eyes glued to them on the last season. That was one reason I shake my head that the show ended. I guess they thought it wouldn't be shit since Sinbad had long left as did Dawnn. And having the two biggest stars of that show wouldn't have made sense for them to keep it going.

I know the exact episode you were talking about and the way Whitley took a stand during that show was the bomb. nod Hell the show helped to increase the love of who I was as a black boy. You learned a lot of lessons watching that show compared to the Cosby Show lol

Hey now smile , The Cosby is a fantastic show. But it is VERY friendly, in fact it is perhaps THE MOST friendly comedy of the past few decades. You learned lessons of growing up...

A Different World taught you about history and shit that happens as an adult smile , plus the fact it brought up the ''Mammy'' and its negative effect upon African Americans' sense of beauty and self-worth, and the little-known fact that some well-to-do African-Americans actually Owned Slave Themselves.

Oh & not to mention the HIV episode!
