Hey now smile , The Cosby is a fantastic show. But it is VERY friendly, in fact it is perhaps THE MOST friendly comedy of the past few decades. You learned lessons of growing up...

A Different World taught you about history and shit that happens as an adult smile , plus the fact it brought up the ''Mammy'' and its negative effect upon African Americans' sense of beauty and self-worth, and the little-known fact that some well-to-do African-Americans actually Owned Slave Themselves.

Oh & not to mention the HIV episode!

I wasn't dissing the Cosby Show. wink I learned some lessons from that show too (it was more every day life). I meant I learned social lessons from A Different World. nod

lol , no no. i see what you mean, i was agreeing pretty much.

cosby was more about growing up into an adult, ADW was like you an adult time for the REAL fucked up shit to happen lol

Exactly. lol This is a reason - along with his comedy albums and Bill Cosby: Himself - that in spite of everything, I'll never lose my respect for Bill Cosby. cool Least with his shows, you wouldn't have "brain damage". lol

I know the exact episode you were talking about and the way Whitley took a stand during that show was the bomb. nod Hell the show helped to increase the love of who I was as a black boy. You learned a lot of lessons watching that show compared to the Cosby Show lol

nod Hell yes. The show definitely brought up topics that were taboo in households and other shows were too afraid to touch it. Remember the sexual harrassment episode with Whitley and her boss? Or the racism episode when Ron and Dwayne get to fighting with those guys in the parking lot who were spray painting racial slurs on Ron's car? That episode was wild...but very realistic.

Anywho, you are very right when you say we don't have any of these type intelligent shows on air today.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I think we need more of this, a show that had great African American characters. Smart, intelligent and down to earth. And no coonery bullshit COUGH Tyley Perry COUGH

Plus it addressed a lot of issues that where not very present in sitcoms at the time, there was one very interesting ep i remember. Where i think it was Whitley?

Found out some of her ancestors owned slaves & the episode brought up the entire ''mammy'' sterotype as well. That is something i don't think i ever saw addressed in many shows before or after.

I rember the show.
It was also broadcasted in Holland.

However, although the Dutch did trade and tansported slaves, in the Netherlands there were no slaves. So, white Dutch people don't have any association with brown skin as they were slaves or sevants for white families.

Maybe you label that as ignorance, however it did have the effect that the sitcom was just apreciated over here. The whole race thing about these sitcoms didn't really register here. People just liked the show and didn't think about it that much.

I'm not saying there's no racism in Holland, because there is. And accumilating in the last decade. However, the racism has different associations than in America.

So today i caught some re-runs of a different world!!

The gym in my new apartment complex has satellite TV... Which is nice since i only have internet lol

But man! i remember my mom used to watch this show & living single every time re-runs came on. This is actually a really good show!

I watched an ep where Dwayne, Has a dream Whitley is running as the female present. And that he is treated as a woman is usually treated in these apects. I thought it was a clever play on the politics of the time & also the politics of women VS men in the world.

[Edited 6/1/12 1:08am]

This was a good show. I liked it better after Lisa and marrissa left the show.
