Both times my fire alarms went off in the time I have been living were I am I just ran out with my kids and worried about what I left behind later.
I just made sure the kids had clothes and shoes on. That was it.
I live in an apartment building and when the alarms go off you just get out.
I never had a fire in my unit Thank God, and am careful that I never do.

Yeah, I used to have a mental list of what I thought I'd grab but last summer the roof of our apartment building caught on fire. When the NYFD told me to leave, my list when out the window. I grabbed my keys and my cell phone. I didn't even think to grab my wallet/id/money! Luckily there was no damage to our apartment but I was disappointed in myself for not even thinking to grab my id and a credit card. Hopefully there won't ever be a next time, but my mental list now includes money/id. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

We had an alarm recently (smoke was coming up the garbage chute from 8 cloors below) and I managed to grab my phone & my purse and was so proud of myself! It contained my wallet which was what I was thinking of.
I didn't bother with anything else. |

I'd grab my purse and laptop and phone and that's about it. I'm not really attached to my other stuff. I just wanna live !

Hopefully I'll remember my emergency backpack by the door and purse, hopefully in an emergency I can get to it, has at least the copies of all the important stuff. It makes me a bit uncomfortable though about it. I really need a fire safe.

Anything music related. And maybe a snack.

Everybody is saying music collection (including me) but then it hit me of how unrealistic it would be to carry our ENTIRE music collection out of the fire with the lack of time we have. Some of us have BIG collections.

I'll take it all out or die with it.

Well...I have 5 cats so I've used up all my choices from the jump! But if I could count them all as one, they would be first, then family pictures/cards/letters, etc., and the rest I don't much care about because it can all be replaced, but you can never get back old phtographs, tape recordings of family, stuff like that. Ok coz I am such a worry wart - I have done the following: I have an emergency box with a lid on it (like a plastic storage box) - in my part of Queensland Australia floods are more of a problem than fire. But I have in it - house insurance policies & personal papers & bits and pieces that I would not like to lose.
And I have a portable external hardrive that has my photos and music on it that is important to me. I even scanned all my daughters baby photos and put them on the hard-drive and I back it up regulary so any new family pics are on there too (the wonderful thing about the digital age).
I also have my teddybear I have had since I was 6 in there - just coz it is the only thing I own from my childhood.
so I would just grab the box and my handbag and leave.
Oh and my beloved 17 years old dog too of course - him first Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜
