In the US, I think we've always eaten pizza with the hands. In the general EU it has been my experience that a knife and fork is used whether in public or in the home. Inside my own home I stick to my American ways and eat it with my hands unless I'm having company
In Italy, pizza is most definitely eaten with a knife and fork unless you are passing through a cheap pizzeria that serves pizza al taglio with a pliable crust and is served in paper, in which case it should be folded and eaten in the hand with the paper as a protective barrier against making a mess.
However, if you you are being served an actual pizza pie in Italy (which is generally the case in a restaurant), then utensils are used. To not do so one is considered maleducato, although it's not nearly as horrifying to to Italians as seeing people cut their spaghetti. |

There are certain slices of pizza that beg to be eaten with knife & fork.
Like a baked ziti slice.

This.
The other day I had a small pizza and used a fork because it was too fucking hot, and I didn't want to handle the pizza with my hands. It made more sense to just break out a fork, cut it with that, and then blow on the individual pieces and eat them.
Plus, out in public sometimes it's just neater and more polite to use a knife and fork instead of picking everything up with your hands. If you have a huge, sloppy sandwich that you can't really handle without probably getting it all over yourself, it makes more sense to just use a knife and fork or a spoon on it and spare yourself the bullshit (and everyone else from having to deal with the mess you make).
This is really just a stupid question that anyone with a functioning brain could figure out on their own, I'm surprised anyone actually had to ask this.

Well, some foods are not supposed to be eaten with a knife and fork according to its culture of origin. Many cultures do not have forks, and very many do not have knives at the dining table.
I can't believe how many white folks wanted a knife and fork to eat Korean BBQ ribs, and they were all mad when there weren't any. Don't people eat regular American style BBQ ribs with their hands? Why expect utensils for ribs in an ethnic cuisine that 1) uses chop sticks, and 2) don't have knives in place setting at all, and 3) all the Koreans are eating it with their hands (pick it up at the bone - it's not very messy)?

Unless you are sitting in Korea right now, its PROBABLY because we are in America... If your going to move here to make money in someone else's country, then you should cater to ALL kinds of people's way's of eating.. Its just polite to take into consideration other peoples cultures if you are feeding people who have a different way than you do... In public, its gross to me to see people licking all over their fingers and touching shit after their stubby fingers have been in their mouths.. Use a damn fork!
And I have no idea wtf being white has to do with any of this... ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~ |
