Shouldn't we be allowed to go home "pre-sick"?

I'm sitting here at work and everyone is coughing and hacking.

Allegedly it's all "allergies".

Now I'm coughing myself.

I want to go home BEFORE I get sick. I know some of these mo-fos have a damned cold. It ain't no allergies.

rolleyes

Shouldn't employers allow you to go home "pre-sick"????

nod

CNN has a story online today about how American workers don't use all of their paid days off.

If other Americans have a job like I do, you have to guard those days off like gold. I'm talking vacation and sick.

I have coworkers that use their days as soon as they accrue them, then when something big happens, like a major illness, injury or surgery, they have nothing but unpaid time off to fall back on.

It is also HUGELY frowned upon to take sick days. It's so frustrating. I don't want their cooties and they don't want mine, but we get about one day to be sick then get back to work so you don't put the others out.

I know that I have wanted to take a sick day because I feel a bad cold coming on and many times I just need to sleep, take meds and drink lots of water then I can get back to work, but none of us can do that. We have to plow through and be miserable.

I have a cubicle, so it's not like I can even close myself in.

disbelief

If everyone with a cough went home, there would be NO ONE LEFT. lol

But yeah, we Americans can't seem to take time off, huh? Doesn't helo any that we have a whopping THREE sick days a year (and they don't carry over).

Maybe I can buy some acrylic tarps and build a "bubble" around my cubicle??? hmmm

Must be something in the air conditioning.

Most employers don't give a rats ass if you're not feeling well. They will send you home if they see you are "too sick" or "not productive" to get through the day.

I guess I'm pretty lucky, not too long ago I asked to leave early because I wasn't feeling well, told my boss I'd leave within the hour to get some more work done. She told me if I was sick then I had to leave NOW, not an hour from when I told her lol Ok! biggrin

Technically, we don't get any sick time at my job. But I am actually home sick today and I don't have to put in for vacation time or anything (I'm salaried).

I am expected to get my work done anyway and/or make reasonable accomodations. If you're out more than a few days, there's an official policy on when it becomes a short-term disaibility leave and your pay would drop, but I've never been out for more than a few days. And often I'm working from home intermittmently anyway.

But that's the cool thing. I can work from home if needed and, even better, so can my coworkers. It's pretty rare to see someone hacking and dying at the office and that's the way it should be. We also have hand sanitizer stations all over my building.

I agree that Americans need WAY more time off of work. I'm also someone who values my time away and I take every last bit of my earned vacation time. And I don't feel bad about it. I also don't feel bad saying "no" I can't work late.

What you mean is, shouldn't they be mandated to allow for pre-sick days? If you have a paid time off bank, you can use your sick/vacation time. Nothing stops an employer from allowing it.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

If you have sick days on the books yes, you get paid, but if you have an extended illness, once you've use you sick days, FMLA holds your job, but you go without pay.

I hope you are rotating the kind of allergy medicine you use. Because if you use any allergy medicine (Claritin/allegra/Zyrtec) continually your body will compensate, not work as well and create more mucus. I change my medication every 2 to 3 months (2 months zyrtec/1month allegra). Also in peak allergy season I take benedryl at bedtime. If it's real bad I will take 1 benedryl during the day as well. You just have to make sure you wait till 4 hours after taking your regular allergy pill.

I also go without medication when possible.

I have only had allergies for 3 years, but the like to kick my butt.
