The Official return of 'In Living Color' Thread [img:$uid]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BjIk8eu3HXQ/Tq3kr5izIkI/AAAAAAAACEQ/k6o8Ldjjw3g/s1600/In_Living_Color_logo.jpg[/img:$uid]
I was gonna wait a few more days until the beginning of April to create this thread, but I just found out the most incredible news EVER!!!!!!! As most know, late last year, Fox (celebrating it's 25 years on the air) has decided to bring back the highly rated sketch series and the original man in charge is back, KEENEN IVORY WAYANS. He will produce 2 half hour shows (like they used too) and if the rating and response is good, (y'all better watch) than a whole season will be ordered. I have a little news on the new episodes, but that will come a little later ...
Since I have created this thread, I'll start off with what I was gonna do.
I will be posting little tidbits about the series you may or may not have known, that I found doing research. Like who was almost in the cast, ect.
In Living Color is my favorite series, TV show, variety show, whatever you wanna call it, it's my favorite. Weird since in it's original run, I can only remember two episodes (well, considering I was 5 and 6 when those episodes aired, that's pretty good.) It was a Men on Cooking Thanksgiving special and a Chris Rock appearance from the last season that I can remember watching.
Ok, well here is the big news by original cast member TOMMY DAVIDSON!!!!!!

That's great news.
I hope they can get Jim Carrey for an episode. Ironically, he was always my favorite cast member. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

Everyone of them (Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier, Tommy Davison, Jamie Foxx, the Wayans') better go back and show Keenan love.
That show made STARS. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

That show made STARS. I think Jim and the rest of the gang will be there. There was no beefs during the series like other shows except with Keenen and Fox (and they seemed to have made up years ago.) And a few Fly Girls here and there (Jamie Foxx vs J-Lo and DAG vs Carrie Ann Inaba.) Hopefully those will be put asie. PRINCE: Always and Forever

I'm so It was my fave comedy show until The Chappelle Show. I can't wait to see who will become stars this time around. Not sure on who will be apart of the new cast (though I do know a few writers who I will share later.) Keenen might have wished this got started a yar earlier, that way his nephews Damon Jr, Damien and Craig could be part of this series. Now, they have their own obligations with Jr's Happy Endings and the other guys in a yet to be named sitcom on BET. Theer is a niece out there, Chaunte Wayans who does stand up. Look for her to be in the new version. PRINCE: Always and Forever

So far, two writers have been confirmed for the new episodes (not sure about the reunion.)
Comic Ian Edwards. He's put in work, he does stand up (pretty funny) been in a few movies. He also has sketch comedy history. He's worked on SNL, Chocolate News with David Alan Grier and the recent In The Flow with Affion Crockett. I wonder if he'll join the cast?
Comedian James Davis, who's known for his "Baracka Flacka Flames parody "Head of State" has joined as a writer. Now, he performed that skit, so will double as a performer and writer, we'll see?

The beginnings of In Living Color
[img:$uid]http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/R/htmlR/racismethni/racismethniIMAGE/racismethni1.jpg[/img:$uid]
'In Living Color' was created after the success of Keenen Ivory Wayans' surprise 1988 hit film "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!" After the success, he begin doin' screening for another film in early 1989 and invited FOX. But the film department of 20th Century FOX didn't show up, the new television division however did. Keenen wanted an hour long, Fox wanted 30 minutes Keenen shortened it to 30 minutes. They gave him a deal to do whatever he wanted, creative control and hip-hop music ... so sketch comedy it was.
[img:$uid]http://dalaughingbarrel.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/in-living-color.jpg[/img:$uid]
He (and brother Damon) had history with sketch comedy. With his buddy Robert Townsend, he created 'Hollywood Shuffle' which was a bunch of sketches put together by the duo since 1984 and put to film in early 1987 and 'Robert Townsend & His Partners in Crime' the HBO variety series. Damon had been a featured player on Saturday Night Live in 1985 and was fired before that 10th season ended in early 1986. In early 89', he had auditions in Chicago, Miami but mostly in LA at the 'Comedy Act Theater'. The cast was completed in June of 89' and included Keenen, Damon and their sister Kim who had a recurring role on A Different World. Damon's co-star from "Earth Girls are Easy" James Carrey (who had auditioned for SNL the same season Eddie Murphy got on), longtime Wayans’ friend David Alan Grier, former musician Tommy Davidson, who Keenen had met a few years earlier with Robert Townsend. Kim Coles, a young up and coming comedienne and from Chicago, Kelly Coffield and Crystal Walker (later Crystal T'Keyah Keymáh.) Instead of a band, Keenen insisted on a DJ and younger brother Shawn would be christened DJ SW-1 and they would dancers, called 'Fly Girls' who were choreographed by Rosie Perez. Carrie Ann Inaba, was an original Fly Girl and went on to tour with Madonna and judge Dancing With the Stars. They started filming the pilot in July of 89. If didn't get picked up for almost a year as it premiered April 15, 1990.
SW-1 and the Fly Girl were so hot, that at the end of he 2nd season, Keenen produced a series for them to star in called “Kickin’ It With the Fly Girls.” DJ SW-1 was to be the host of the series that would show music videos and have live performances. It was never picked up.
The 3rd season bought in a new set and some new people. DJ-SW1 who appeared in sketches through the 2nd season now officially joined the cast as a featured performer. He'd been performing stand up since he was 17 years old. His replacement was DJ Twist. Steve Park, an actor (Do The Right Thing) and sometime stand up joined the cast too (and in holly matrimony with c-star Kelly Coffield.) Jamie Foxx, from Texas came to Oakland, Cali in the late 80s. He won the Oakland Comedy Competition which got him a slot on the series after auditioning the first time in 1989.. Another famous Fly Girl, the most famous, Jennifer Lopez also had a audition a few times before Keenen gave her that call.
The fourth season would be the last with Keenen and the Wayans, but it gave way to another brother of his. Marlon, who had been in commercials had co-stared with Damon (who had left the series after season 3 but would make guest appearances until the family left) in Mo Money and Alexandra Wentworth. She said Keenen picked her because when she auditioned she played a "white trash" character and Keenen liked that.
[img:$uid]http://cdn2.dailycaller.com/2011/04/flygirl.jpg[/img:$uid]
It lasted one more season, but without Keenen, it was always missing something.
Also, you'd be surprised who all auditioned for the show way back when. I'll reveal those names tomorrow.

Tommy Davidson Updates Geno Jones on ‘In Living Color’ Reunion (Audio)March 23, 2012 2 Comments
Scroll down and listen to the hilarity as Geno and Tommy mix it up
By Chris Richburg
*The reported return of the classic hit television show “In Living Color” is moving forward, according to one of its original stars. (Are you a fan of EURweb? Like us on Facebook or Follow us on Twitter.) Speaking with Geno Jones on Charleston, SC’s WXST Star 99.7, Tommy Davidson revealed that plans are underway to reunite with fellow cast mates Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans, Jim Carrey, Kim Coles, Shawn Wayans, Marlon, Wayans, David Alan Grier, Kim Wayans and T’Keyah Crystal Keymáh to begin filming the “In Living Color” reunion. “We’re shooting it. We’re supposed to be shooting it at the end of this month. So it’s coming soon,” stated Davidson, who had no problem coming on board for the event. “I got a call from Keenen Ivory Wayans. That’s the bald-headed one all the way … He called me and he said ‘Look. The guys are getting together. Would you like to come back?’ And of course I said ‘Sure. Let’s do it.’” The funnyman’s revelation is the latest development to occur regarding “In Living Color”’s return, which is set for this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, two “In Living Color” half-hour specials hosted and executive produced by Keenen Ivory Wayans will air on Fox with the option of picking up the show for the following season. During its heyday, “In Living Color” became must see TV with its edgy comedy skits and musical segments involving the Fly Girls. The show, which ran from 1990 to 1994, featured guest appearances from Chris Rock and Tupac Shakur, who also performed as a musical guest. Other performers included Queen Latifah, En Vogue, Public Enemy, Jodeci, Mary J. Blige and Heavy D, who performed the “In Living Color” theme song. Since the show aired, Davidson and the show’s stars have gone on to successful careers in various areas of show business. When Jones asked whether he and the original “In Living Color” cast knew how influential the show would be, Davidson admitted it was a matter of destiny as he referenced two well-known successes. “We knew. We knew. I mean we worked so hard on it and all of us were so good at what we did,” he said. “We knew as much as Michael Jordan knew that once he got a team around him, he was gonna win some rings. We knew like that. We knew like Oprah believed that if she could ever get syndicated, she could do business in TV. We knew like that.” In addition to the original cast, the “In Living Color” reunion will include three new cast members. HumorMill.com reports that comedians Lil Rell and Jermaine Fowler will appear on the show, along with Jennifer Bartels. Despite occasional contact every so often, Davidson said he hasn’t seen his co-stars as much as he used to. “I see ‘em here and there. Like me and Jim were always really close friends. But I see everybody everywhere, David. I see them all over,” the entertainer shared. “Shawn and Marlon are good. It seems like everywhere I go, they just left or I’m just coming. So we’re crossing paths. Kim Wayans is doing her thing individually. And then there’s T’Keyah Crystal Keymáh. We did a lot on the show… That girl’s a great writer. So we’re all just blessed. We’ve all been just blessed.” EUR Bonus Coverage

Now, these guys and gals could have been on the series, but just missed out on the cast for some reason or another.

Chris Rock In an interview from 89' Rock says he was to be a performer and writer for the show. Rock had known the Wayans for his entire brief career at that time, Keenen even put him in 'I'm Gonna Get You Sucka!" Damon took him under his wing as a performer. While Eddie Murphy may have discovered him, Damon showed him the comedy game working the New York club scene in the mid 80s’. Keenen wanted him on the show, but FOX didn't. It goes back to a date rape joke he told on The Arsenio Hall Show (FOX affiliated) earlier in 1989. He would however later work on the show in it's last season, but by then, the Wayans had departed.

Martin Lawrence David Alan Grier said he had auditioned for the show with a group that included; Martin Lawrence, Susie Essman and Reggie McFadden. While Lawrence didn’t make the final cut, I guess Keenen and FOX liked him. Keenen cast him in the lead role for a “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka!” TV series, only a pilot was shown. FOX gave him his own sitcom in 92 which featured episodes with many ILC alumni like his best friend from DC, Tommy Davidson, his Boomerang co-star David Alan Grier, Kelly Coffield, Kim Coles (would star in another FOX series, “Living Single“), the Martin hosted HBO stand-up series Def Comedy Jam regular Reggie McFadden; and Chris Rock.
Susie Essman Auditioned with David Alan Grier, Reggie McFadden and the above mentioned Martin Lawrence. She would later star on "Curb Your Enthusiasm” with another ILC tryout, JB Smoove. Obviously, Kelly Coffield got the job.
Reggie McFadden He auditioned with the above mentioned; DAG, Lawrence and Essman. He actually auditioned for the series three times and he finally became a cast member in the final season (after appearing in the 4th season once.) I guess they had remembered him from the previous years.
Thomas Haden Church auditioned for a spot on the show, but was edged out by Jim Carrey.
D.L. Hughley Tommy Davidson says he auditioned in 1989.
Wesley Snipes A BET special, showing the 25 greatest black TV Shows of All-Time says he auditioned for the series. In Living Color came in at number 8.
J.B. Smoove In an interview, says he auditioned for the series.
Speedy Speedy auditioned in 1991, with his friend Jamie Foxx (also auditioning again …) Jamie made it this time, but Speedy didn’t make the cast. Keenen liked him so he kept him around and was the warm-up for the show. He appeared in many episodes for In Living Color during season 4.
Donnell Rawlings Auditioned for In Living Color, where he met Neal Breenan (who was working as a PA for the show at that time.) Both went on to work on Chappelle’s Show.
Was asked to join the cast in the final season, but he turned it down. Fox would give him a series right after they canceled ILC in 1994, called “House of Buggin’.” It was to be a Hispanic version of ILC but it was canceled after 10 episodes. Fox tried once more with a sketch series, with 1995’s MadTV, and they somewhat succeeded. While it was no where near the impact of ILC, it stayed on the air for 14 seasons. Tommy Davidson and David Alan Grier were frequent guest on MadTV.
Rickey Smiley and Mo’Nique On an episode of "The Mo’Nique Show", where Rickey Smiley was a guest, he mentioned they auditioned together in 1992. Also auditioning that season was Alexandra Wentworth. She mentioned that Keenen was looking for a black male for the new season since brother Damon had left and Keenen would no longer appear in sketches. Aley impressed him so much, that he picked her instead. Smiley was one of the black males booted off.
Larry Wilmore Was not able to audition, but was hired as a writer from season 2 through 4 with his brother Marc Wilmore. Marc is the one who actually made it on the series as a regular, in it’s last season. Larry appeared on a few episodes in the 3rd and 4th fourth season.
There were some famous Fly Girls along the way too ...
[img:$uid]http://cineplex.media.baselineresearch.com/images/294381/294381_large.jpg[/img:$uid]
Jada Pinkett-Smith Jada auditioned for Keenen in his living room when she was 17 years old. Keenen helped her get an agent and helped her career get off the ground in her early years. Keenen went on to cast her in his first film since he left ILC, 1994’s A Low Down Dirty Shame. She also starred with brother Damon in Bamboozled.
Auditioned in 1990.
Janet Jacme and Domonique Simone There was a porn spoof way back in the day called "In Loving Color" which is how I found this out. They danced for Keenen and Rosie Perez. Janet was dancing real good, but they said Domoniqie didn't have enough back, and that's actually how the series "My Baby Got Back" began, lol. PRINCE: Always and Forever

I'm actually glad the cast was what it was. I can't imagine Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Thomas Haden Church doing what Tommy, David and Jim did. And couldn't imagine another white chick being as funny as Kelly Coffield.

I think Martin would have been fine on the series. He had characters from his show that could have easily worked on ILC like Jerome, Otis, the Kung Fu Man, lol. Shenaha vs Wanda.
Thomas and Chris, ehh. Chris was funny as Cheap Pete but that's. Even Shawn Wayans made fun of him on a ILC skit about his SNL career.
Sussie, she's funny on Curb Your Enthusiasm , but yeah I agree. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Martin's the only one that seemed ILC-proof. Chris, Sussie and Thomas wouldn't have fit ILC at all.

Behind the scenes of In Living Color
Rosie Perez Choreographer for the Fly Girls and talent assistant the first 4 seasons. Left after season four with the Wayans'. She played her self in a sketch about "Do The Right Thing."
Mr. Paul Mooney Friend of the Wayans, he created the "Homey The Clown" character and the "Brothers, Brothers" sketches, among others. Only on for the first season. He was the head writer.
Franklyn Ajaye Also friend of the Wayans and only on for the first season . He left after some sketches he didn't seem represented black America correctly, namely the "Homeboy Shopping Network" sketches
Colin Quinn Was a writer in the last season of the series.
Molly Shannon and Ellen Cleghorne Both appeared in the series a few times before both got on as performers for the rival Saturday Night Live. Molly's first appearance was coincidentally a spoof about Saturday Night Live.
Leon Was apparently a stage manager. Little known fact: Keenen co-wrote "The Five Heartbeats" with Robert Townsend and was to also to co-star with him as his brother JT Mathews in the film. He couldn't film the series with In Living Color being picked up, so Leon was his replacement.
Neal Brennan Of Chappelle's Show fame (creator, Dave's right hand man), was a PA/camera man during the series.
Alex Thomas Was not a comic on the series, but an assistant choreographer for Rosie Perez. Keenen and Damon noticed he was funny, that's how he got his big break. PRINCE: Always and Forever
