It's usually best to take pictures of children and animals at their level. Also, a very good angle for most people to have a picture taken is slightly higher than eye level. U tend to look slimmer, and your eyes look bigger. That's all I've got!

Wow nice how did you get that effect with the cars?

I set the shutter speed to I think around 5 or 6 seconds.

The camera cannot move at all so I sat it on the window sill to keep it still.

I'm by no means and expert but I do have fun trying different things.

Isnt that incredibly slow I dont think my camera has that option sadly great effect though.

it looks like he is standing in front of a backlit bus stop poster/ad.

(one that has a yellow image on it)

the light from the front could be achieved using reflectors, looks like another non-yellow lightsource is bouncing off his head - could be a streetlamp

You will not get anything near pro looking shots if your camera does not have the basic controls to manually select shutter speed and aperture values.

However, you don't need to splash out on an expensive SLR/DSLR, many "enthusiast" compact camera's have full manual controls and can produce high quality photographs.

Yes. I recently bought a Canon G12. It's expensive compared with other compacts but does have high quality glass and full manual controls, as well as auto features for people new to photography. It's user interface is very easy to understand too. Great build quality too, it's slightly bigger than your average compact but can still fit into a medium size pocket. The weight, chunky controls and overall feel of the thing is quality.

The G12 has been replaced now with a new model (the GX) so prices have dropped for the G12.

Some pics I took at a recent gig with the Canon G12. I'm no expert by any means, but I have an interest in photography. I think these turned out good considering the ever changing lighting at gigs.

I like canon too. Their "G series" of top of the range compacts have been made for years. Every year or so a new model appears with all the latest wizz bang! The G12 replaced the G11 which was not a popular camera. Photo noise was rampent and the camera suffered as a result, it was quickly withdrawn and the G12 stepped in to plug the gap with the noise problem sorted and a few other simple adjustments to make it one of the best selling "G series" compacts to date.

Nikon have made a similar top end compact range for a long time too, as do a few other well known camera manufacturers.

I like the G12 though, it's easy to use, is now a good price, and has all the manual jiggery pokery to keep me happy, in a solid metal case less than half the size of a current DSLR.

The biggest tip I can tell you is to always try to have some kind of rim lighting going on in your photos even if it's just an object. This really makes photos look pro.

I'm not sure I get what a rim lighting is. I see some of them have backlighting which shines at the edges, is this what you mean?

yep, it brings out dimension in the subject, and can make it look more interesting even if it's subtle. It's a quick way to make a photo look cool, but it's only one technique.

A bus stop of course can believe I didnt think of that I always thought it was done in a studio with a particular lighting technique.

I got nothing.
