My dog bit my nose.... Almost off. No kidding. It was in the middle of the night and he was having a bad dream, he sleeps at the foot of my bed so I leaned over to cover him with a blanket (it was cold) and he became RABID, jumped up and bit my f'in nose! Wouldn't let go and I thought I would die. He's a little shih tzu but my god, I thought I would lose my nose. I'm not going to hospital because they would probably quarantine him but what should I have done? Spank him? He's a great dog but, spoiled damn rotten! Anyone ever been bitten by their own dog?

I have a friend who has as a result of diabetes has no feeling from his legs down. He came in drunk one evening and fell asleep. His wife later woke up to a crunching noise and when she looked down at the bottom of their bed she saw their pet dog was eating her husbands big toe.
It had eaten down to the bone.
The story ran in The Scottish Sun
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Horrific!
This morning I googled, "My dog bit my nose" just to see what all I should do so it doesn't scar (I look like WC Fields right now) and read about some woman who was sleeping and when she woke up her Greyhound had bitten her nose off- for no reason! Now I'm scared to get to close to my dog! I think I've spoiled him too much. He's a rescue and he might have some issues.

Has he ever shown you any kind of aggression before? He may have just been dreaming and reacted from that.
I'd maybe let him sleep out in the hall but close to your door for a little while and see how things go from there.
hope your nose gets better though.

Ouch. Why would seeking medical attention automatically get your dog quarintined, people have been startled out of deep sleep and taken a swing at folks, they don't send them to jail.

My sister was once bitten by a neighbors cat and they picked it up immediately (after she went to the hospital- she even begged them NOT to pick up the cat, not wanting to piss off her neighbors) and I think here, it's a law that they have to be observed for 30 days no matter what- if they bite.

You would never put your face into/near another humans face when sleeping and having a dream, why the heck do humans think they can do it to animals!! You know how many dogs get put down cause of humans stupidity, this is your fault, I got no sympathy suck it up and learn a lesson never to be so stupid again.
Clean the wound with saline and keep it clean, your doc would normally prescribe antibiotics if an open wound and also check how long ago you received the tetanus vaccination. And its a myth that once dogs taste blood they seek for it, that myth utter bloody bollox. . [Edited 5/9/12 15:08pm]

I read a study on cases like this, some animals sniff out eg cancerous, gangrene etc and attempt to get rid of the problem area other animals just keep sniffing the problematic body part in an attempt to alert the human of a problem.

You should at least go to a clinic and have it looked at...God forbid you should get some nasty infection - and they can help minimize scarring.
I am not sure about the quarantine though.
Did you give the dog any sort of reprimand? I really hope so. You need to maintain your dominant position within the "family", and if he got away with this OR you are now afraid, he is now in a dominant position over you. You need to reverse that. If he so much as growls at you, a swift smack on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper should do the trick.

I'm just making an assumption since it is your dog and it was sleeping at the time. I'm guessing what happened with your sister's neighbor and her cat was more along the lines of soothing the neighbor and protecting the public good. But I honestly don't know, it just wouldn't even occur to me I couldn't go to the doctor over it, maybe it's true sounds a bit weird though. Do you think your dog need some kind of behaviorial training or something?

Oh STFU!!! NO sympathy for what? I didn't do anything to my dog. I love my dog. Your an idiot.

Yeah, I might get him into some behavioral classes. I think he might need them, he's gotten a little "big for his britches" - he nipped my kitty the other day. I used to have a little dog that wouldn't let anyone sit beside me, if they tried, he would bite them! I think this one's getting a little that way. He's so cute but he's feisty! Gonna get him some classes though.....

Thanks PurpleJedi-
No, I didn't reprimand him- I never reprimand my animals and that's why they're a little spoiled. I really do consider them my children, but you're right- I need to let him know who's boss. When I told my son about it he said that once Mr. Jack Brown tried to bite him (the dog) and that he popped him on the nose and he never did it again. He said he never told me because he knew I would get upset that he bopped him on the nose.

No, he won't sleep in the hall - I'll let him stay in the bed but I did learn the lesson I should have known, don't stick your face in a sleeping dogs face! Yeah, he was having a bad dream......
