You should have a good list now with all these posts. BedBath&Beyond has a checklist of things to get for the dorm - it lists lots of stuff that you don't necessarily need, but it's a good reference and can be tailored to your needs.

Lots of folks mentioned ear plugs - a MUST!

Surgeprotector - also a must! As well as an external drive. You do not want your kid to lose his term papers, notes, etc. the night before it's due - AARGH!

Also useful - a small safe and/or lock for your computer. Theft of electronics is common in dorms. I assume other valuables like heirlooms, expensive watches, etc. will not be brought to the dorm at all.
