The useless villiain speech Inspired by a scene in 'The Avengers,' in which a villian's speech is abruptly cut short by The Hulk.
Why would a villian bother explaining their plan, their beliefs and/or their philosophy(ies)?
If I'm going to kill you, why does it even matter? Tell you to satisfy your curiosity or transmit to someone else via a device you have on your person?
It's a very frustrating feature of action films that never ceases to irritate. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Great question. If the villians would shut the fuck up maybe they would actually win!

It reminded of of a scene in Austin Powers where Dr. Evil captured Austin Powers and kept him in a cell where he went off on some long speech about how he was going to destroy Austin Powers and lauch his huge attack against the world, and his son Scott chimed in and said, "Can we just kill him now? It's really easy; just two shots to the head." Or course, Dr. Evil gets pissed off at Scott for interrupting him.

That is something i always wondered to
In the time the villian tells his/her plan they could have killed the hero, gotten away with it & bought a fat burger

Nuh-uh. If I went through all that planning, I'mma let you know the intricacies of coniving and devastating plan and how yo' ass fell for it. You think I'mma kill you just like that. Where's the fun in that? A villain's gotta showboat.

To make you feel even better when the villian gets theirs.
A better question is, how come chicks always drop to the floor and cry after they think they've killed the machete-weilding madman, when clearly the madman isn't dead yet?

It's a device, a tool, used by the screenwriter to transmit info to the audience. Personally, I think it's a mistake; and it's even more offending when the villain uses the pompous "look how smart I am" tone ... while the hero is secretly reaching for his gun or something like that
"Ahh Mr.Bond, before I kill you, let me explain to you the flawless nature of my glorious plan..."
not surprisingly, many of my fav action movies don't feature this kind of speech at all, and not coincidentally, many of the best Bond movies don't have it either...

Well, when you think about it, real life villians do ths an awful lot too, People like Bin Laden, Castro, Ak-men-dinner-jad, etc. yammer on quite a bit. I think it has something to do with the megalomania personality. Few villians are as reticent and Dick Cheney,
It's annoying in movies because the way they do the scenes is so corny and formulaic.
What irks me more is the scene where the damsel always has to fall down at the worst possible moment...they don't use that one as much anymore.
I think the absolute WORST is when the hero and heroine are moments away from certain death and they decide it's a good time to pause from their dire circumstances for some kissy face, pillow talk and screwing....that really pisses me off every time and I always end up yelling at the screen, "OHFERCRYINOUTLOUD! get on with the damn story already!" That was sort of the whole plot of Megamind. Will Ferrell voiced the title character, who was plotting to take over Metro City and defat the much-loved superhero Metro Man. Megamind set up a trap to get Metro Man blown up with a death ray, and it worked, but not because he killed Metro man but because Metro Man was tired of being a superhero and wanted to become a singer, so he faked his own death. Megamind then took over Metro City, but the place went to hell under his watch, and without an enemy to give him inspiration, he became disillusioned and depressed. So he comes up with a plan to inject a serum made of Metro Man's DNA to create a new superhero that would fgiht him, but it gets injected into a nenerdy camerman, who becomes obsessed with his new power and turns into an evil villain. Megamind then has to save the city.

Same reason the dumb woman runs into the dark room when being chased by the axe murderer. They know we will continue to watch the same dumb scenes, I also go for popcorn about that time. Prince's Sarah

Hell yeah! Whern they have 60 seconds to clear the building but the two of them stop, confess, kiss, hug etc seemingly oblivious to their own peril. It such cases, I would really expect one of them to die to make the scene matter. Of course they escape the massive explosion by outrunning flying debris and even though the concussive force may throw them a few dozen feet, it doesn't amazingly liquefy their lungs or brains and other soft tissue. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

yep. that's what i was going to say. plot device, like a recap, a summary to wrap things up for thye reader/viewer.
also, it gives the hero a chance to work his/her way free from whatever form of bondage the bad guy may have used, turn the tables and allow good to triumph over evil.

In a book? I hope not. Much better ways to provide the reader with than information in a book. In a movie, it should be done a lot better. Share it with a sidekick before you capture the hero. Why someone who is about to die really needs to know what they're about to miss . . . . I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

i know! i know! alas, i've read some books/seen some movies where the project just wouldn't come together without the villain/ess standing up and explaining (usually at length) just how and why the whole thing came about. oh well

These days what I find even worse is the 'villain throw'. They have the hero in their grasp and can do any number of things e.g. strangle them to death, jam their head against a frame and slam the door on their neck, bend their spin over a knee etc, but instead the villain elects to just "throw" the hero around. He will throw him over here, and then over there, and then reaches for the hero and oh, look out, he's just shoved a corkscrew he got off the floor where you threw him right into your fucking eye. It's such crap and feels slightly like deus ex machina. I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world.

what i dont get about villains is how -
. they employ hundreds of ppl (all with the same faces that repeatedly die in movies) . own very expenses houses and cars - are very vey wealthy . usually date hot ppl . put all their money towards destruction so that they can get more money or the same money that they put toward destruction
and with all that they want more????? more what i say!!!!!! mailto:www.iDon'tThinkSo.com.Uranus

[Edited 5/6/12 18:36pm] Would you agree its primarily the villains motivations that are conveyed? Usually to clear it up for those who weren't able to infer them from plot, actions, and reactions. Somewhat like a "pointer scene.". Since some will miss some details here and there, before a complicated scene, a plan is conveyed to players allowing the audience a heads up so they can follow what will happen easier. I.e. heist movie blueprint/schematic scene...like that dinero/norton movie....or star wars with Mon Mothma and admiral ackbar. My cinema teacher told me this and i watched star wars 6 comentary today it was in there. [Edited 5/8/12 17:48pm]
