What's the best e-reader? This is an early Mother's Day present for my wife. She's going to Cancun, Mexico Sunday, so I'm going to buy it Saturday. What's a great e-reader for reading at the beach? I don't think she's going to do anything but read books with it. | |

my gf has a regular Kindle (with the keyboard) And it works perfectly, though it did get some small cracks in it. I looked at the more basic Kindle, and it seemed a lot cheaper, and page turns are not as smooth. It also doesn't have the audiobooks/MP3 player option. I wouldn't get it, though I am sure it works fine.
The regular Nook seeemed pretty cool, with a touch screen, and cheaper than the Kindle keyboard. But I get the sense Nook is not really catching on as much, and Kindle is growing.
If I was going to buy one today, it would probably be the regular Kindle with the keyboard. My Legacy

If she's going to read outside, she needs a reader that isn't backlit. So a basic e-ink reader is the thing. I have a Nook First Edition, which I don't think they sell anymore. If I were to get another dedicated e-reader (ie, NOT a tablet), I'd probably go for a Nook Simple Touch or the new Nook with the glow screen (provided it isn't a true backlit deal). I think those things are a little hard on the eyes, too, compared to the regular e-ink. But as a toy, it's WAY better than a regular Kindle/Nook My Legacy

And if you want to read e-magazines, it's nice to have a color screen. But for plain old book readin', the non-tablet Kindle/Nook is just fine. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. I have the Nook Color...the Kindle Fire wasn't out yet,
But seriously, the only thing is that it cost substantially more than the Kindle Fire, but since it was a gift...
The size is perfect too...not too big or too small.
I like versatility and it does everything I want...I can listen to mp3 audio books, surf the web, make slideshows with photos, and oh yeah, read books even in bright light because I bought a matte cover for the screen. It even has an expansion slot so you can buy more gigabytes of storage.
I hope wifey enjoys her Kindle.

The Nook Simple Touch now has a 'light' for dim reading. But, it's true pearl e-ink, so there's less strain on the eyes in natural light.
And the battery lasts damned near forever.

I have a Fire and it's ok...but I really use it mostly for reading (rarely used for movies or internet) and I love it for magazines as you get all the pics and graphics like a real mag...but it is NOT good for outside reading. I needed to buy a cheap regular Kindle, and honestly use it more than the Fire as its easier to see...so I recommend just a regular Kindle (i hear good things about the Nook too). |
