There are many young men trying to come out of the closet, i myself for years couldn't come to term.

And some (not all) but some women who call themselves "fag hags" (which is a term I think is bullshit) would say they wouldn't like their kid if they were straight and not gay. I don't know if that's as acceptable as those who say if their kid was gay they wouldn't like them either. Or those who won't like their kid if they claim to be bisexual or wanna be/or think they are of two genders (or agendered/no gender).

I think also flamboyance is prevalent in straight, gay, bi worlds. Flamboyance is a part of life, just like it would be for people who do drag regardless of what side of the pond they fish in. There's straight guys who are into fashion, something that is stereotypically deemed as something someone from the gay community would do.

Then there's those who claim an illness will make you gay... Like this mess I saw on Daily Mail like a few weeks ago, this guy was a rugby fan and shit, but he had some accident (I forgot what he said he had) but when he woke up (I think he was in a coma from a fall), he claimed that it "woke him up" to his "real" sexuality. And then he started doing the stereotypical stuff associated with the "gay community": dying his hair, he lost weight, got a puppy, got into fashion, etc.

I don't know, I think some folks often are try hards (read: not all) in proving how glad they are to be gay that they flaunt it so openly it gets annoying even for other gay folks who just live their life.

Yes the openly annoying can be well... annoying. I also get annoyed by gay people that constantly also dis son straight people like all of them are nazis. It's such a huge 2 way street, it's either they wanna be seen a sstraight acting, or they think all straight people are nazis.

It makes sense that one wants to "fit in" so they'll do anything just to prove they are who they are... it's true with sexuality though. It's like if you're straight, bone every woman you can find and be macho for no reason at all (and that's not true of all straight folks at all), if you're gay, bone any guy you think is physically attractive and either be a jock, femme, bear, etc. or be into music or fashion or do drag (not all gay folks are the same), and bisexuals are supposed to "bone anything that moves" and that's not always true either. So true, and that is part of the issue i think. And that was kind of what i was saying to Genesia.

People should be who they are, not worry about acting gay, straight, bisexual or sterotypes of others. Just be you and live you... don't try to fit into the scheme of thing's it's a waste of time to me.

Another reason i kind of went on a tangent, and to explain to everyone the full understanding. I think you should love the skin you are in, and the reason i mentioned the asians trying to act like a sterotypical white man. Is that they are VERY beautiful and attractive man, there dark skin is attractive, there lighter skin is attractive. There attractive the way they are, and successful the way they are... and like when my friend said he need's a white man to be taken serious why? you are a smart individual and going to UCLA wtf does having a white man have to do with that

I've never considered myself a part of the community. I used to try when I was younger but was disgusted with the fact that, based on my experience, so many gay men, especially black gay men, judge other men solely on their physical appearance. Personality and substance seem to come in a distant last.

I have never been morbidly obese but my weight has always fluctuated. As a man who has battled weight all my life, when I was younger and trying to date, I could not get a gay man to look at me and still can't. Back in '91, I dated a gay guy for about 2 weeks and he ended up sending me a letter saying he thought I was a really fantastic guy but I was too fat for him (2 years later he tried to get back with me after he found out most of the "in-shape" dudes were users but I had already moved on by then). When I would go to clubs or other gay hangouts, the ridiculous conversations I would hear amongst gay men judging people based on their physical appearance caused me to have some disdain for the community. In turn, I came to the conclusion that gay men are the vainest mother fuckers on the face of the earth. I know straight men and women have hang-ups about weight and judge people on their physical appearance but, as a whole, it doesn't seem to be as rampant and as nasty as it is in the gay male community.

In my personal life, I ended up having relationships with bi-sexual men or men who considered themselves straight because they weren't interested in whether or not I had a muscular, lean body. They were interested in some really fantasic, nasty, buck-wild sex! I've been in an relationship for over 20 years now with a bisexual guy who loved me when I was fat and when I was skinny. It has simply never been an issue with him. Gay men really need to get over themselves and stop being so judgemental.

I've never really felt a huge connection to the gay community--or, more accurately, I've never had a great handle on what the "gay community" truly is, and therefore couldn't make a strong connection. I'm 100% out and proud and all that, and I have been since my early to mid-20s. But I was in my early 30s before I really got any sense of where I "belonged."

I do relate to some of the negatives in the OP, like not being accepted because of weight, for example. But if you live in a city of any meaningful size, you're probably going to have options. If you don't fit in at the twink bar, just go to a bar that better suits you. Or better yet, start making your friends through better venues--most of my best gay friends I've met through work or through this site.

The "too butch"/"too femme" argument has always seemed silly to me. If someone is putting on an affect in their speech or mannerisms or personality, it's annoying as hell to me and I would head for the hills. I have zero time for that. But when it comes to natural mannerisms--bring them on. My straight-seeming and my flamboyant friends are all awesome.

A lot of the stuff in the OP seems like the kind of nonsense that goes away with age--which brings up an interesting point that I think hasn't been brought up yet: To me, the biggest "-ism" in the gay world is ageism. So I guess my one suggestion, Gunsnhalen, is to extract yourself from that cast of vapid, judgy fools before they push you out, because your time with them is going to be fleeting anyway.

Both of my parents were teachers but chose to live in the projects from the time that I was 6 until I turned 9. They were saving money to build a house. When we finally moved, they were maligned by our old neighbors for "chasing the white man's coat tails," just because they had dreams of owning their own home and raising their children in a decent neighborhood. It's sad, pitiful acutually, that some of our folk still think this way.

...and i think Gunsnhalen gave some really clear examples of his experiences of people who openly admitted that they were trying to be more white because it is perceived as better, or an asset to moving ahead in society. Hell, I even have a gay black friend that changed his name and learned Spanish so that he could assume a Hispanic heritage for that exact reason. He explained to me 20 years ago that it would leave him with less baggage in the workplace than if he led his life as a black man.

When I was a teenager, I also used to have some experience with minority/ethnic girls in my prep school who openly would admit to this, particulary to explain cerain plastic surgeries they were getting. I can relate to Guns' experience with people who have blatantly and unapologetically taken that road. I would never want to see anyone go this route, but sadly I have and I've just always pretty much just accepted it with (a somewhat perplexed) "okay "

That's just nuts what we do just to fit in and have less problems than we would have as ourselves. I'm thankful for who I am so I can take any bullshit that comes my way as a young black male.

Boo as The Boondocks ep pointed out BET B.E.T Bullshit tV IS NOTHING but showing negative sterotypes of African Americans. Scarlet showed me this interview Janelle Monae did on there, and the people looked confused at the fact she wasn't talking ghetto, shaking her ass or talking about her beefs.
