Come on , G! You know what he means! ohgoon It's a shame, but these types of assumptions promulgated by our own people. I remember when I was a child growing up in the projects. Both of my parents were teachers but chose to live in the projects from the time that I was 6 until I turned 9. They were saving money to build a house. When we finally moved, they were maligned by our old neighbors for "chasing the white man's coat tails," just because they had dreams of owning their own home and raising their children in a decent neighborhood. It's sad, pitiful acutually, that some of our folk still think this way.

...and i think Gunsnhalen gave some really clear examples of his experiences of people who openly admitted that they were trying to be more white because it is perceived as better, or an asset to moving ahead in society. Hell, I even have a gay black friend that changed his name and learned Spanish so that he could assume a Hispanic heritage for that exact reason. He explained to me 20 years ago that it would leave him with less baggage in the workplace than if he led his life as a black man.

When I was a teenager, I also used to have some experience with minority/ethnic girls in my prep school who openly would admit to this, particulary to explain cerain plastic surgeries they were getting. I can relate to Guns' experience with people who have blatantly and unapologetically taken that road. I would never want to see anyone go this route, but sadly I have and I've just always pretty much just accepted it with (a somewhat perplexed) "okay shrug "

Thank ya smile

it is tragic people have to think like this, just last night one of the asian friend's i mentioned. He said i think i hate that he is ''attracted'' to white people... um NO you can be attracted to whoever you want. But it's the REASONS, and you think that any white man you get is going to be in power & have money. And he said well it's true white people usually save it better0_o whatever lol.

And i have actually stopped talking to some people cause of this.... like this guy who i went on a date with way back in like october. I went to his apt, he had all these creamers to look white, he would put it on everyday before school to appera lighter, and he took some weird pills that supposedly helped you get lighter to. I mean all this shit eek and he would go on & on about how beautiful white men are, and how he has to have there eyes, and there features because he felt people his color where ugly eek

He even told me he would stay with a man who treats him like shit as long as he is white... he was a very disturbing person & i had to cut off all ties with him. It went from feeling sorry for him... to just pathetic confused

At least u came forward and admitted that what you have observed does not make sense to you.

I was very self concious when I was in my 20's and very aware of what others would think of me if I dressed a certain way.

I am now 50 and I truly don't give a shit.

Many people who were overly concious of other's standards and values when younger finally stop caring when they get to 50.

You realize finally that some day you are going to die.

It won't change the world one way or another if you "dress your age", dress feminine or masculine, or any other thing.

Your going to die no matter what u where and how many friends you have or don't have.

To me the point is to enjoy life.

Wear clothes that make you feel attractive.

Date men that u find interesting and attractive.

Live and let live. If others are doing the "Bria Valente" thing where they change everything and anything about themselves to be accepted and get a man, just fucken let them. It is their life and they can do with it as they please.

Keep the focus on yourself and do with this short span of time what u truly enjoy doing and surround yourself with those who make life worth living whenever you can.

I watched a Barbie movie with my daughter. At one point Barbie said to her friend that her grandemother told her " other peoples opinion of you is none of your business".

Also none of your business is why Asians want to wear blonde hair or anything else. If you find blonde Asians attractive - Fuck em- if you don't then fuck somebody else. wink

Any minority community whose rights have been oppressed and subjugated for centuries is going to have modern day issues within itself. Just because we fight for rights doesn't mean the entirety of our house is clean.

There's a lot of gay people out there living their lives and there's more to it than just their sexuality. It affects them. The gay community also has a hard time proving itself TO itself, so there you go.

I knew you would come in here & say something, at least you are a little nicer then on scarlets thread.

And you know what i mean, come on now. People try to act like the sterotypes of black or white. It is a fact i have met many people that admit to trying to act a different race or a different way. Asian guys that tell me they try to lighten there skin, die there hair blonde, think all other asians are unattractive. Want there skin white, they want it because of the sterotype that white men have better jobs or are seen in a better light. It's a dumb sterotype & some believe it sadly, so yes i can accuse some people because they downright tell me there doing it.

Than there are guys that try to act like a black thug they see on BET, They get the clothes, the rap cd's. They try to find more black friend's, i know people who have admited to doing this.... hell i kno wlots of guys that claim there mixed because they don't wanna just be seen as white, black, latino or whatever race they are.

It is a fact some people simply try to act like something there not, and there many homosexuals that try to act straight, hell there are some that say there straight or this is there first time or there on the DL-_-

If you go on certain sites you can see homosexuals saying if your straight or masculine message me.. there is this notion that there are straight guys can just turn homo liek a switch.. if you suck dick, get the dick sucked by a man, fuck a man or get fucked by a man. There a homosexual no if's and or butts....

I still don't know what you mean by black people "acting white." Are you talking about people who study, get good grades and make something of themselves? Who speak standard English? Is that "acting white?"

The love of my life is a black man who spent a fair amount of his youth fighting (often physically) bullies who attacked him for "acting white" because he obeyed his mother and worked hard in school. Are you suggesting that he was in the wrong? He was an Air Force pilot and graduated from the academy with a degree in biochemistry. Are you suggesting he did all that work just so people would think he was white (like anybody can't tell by looking at him that he isn't)?

Why is an Asian person dyeing their hair blonde automatically considered "acting white?" Maybe they just like the look of blonde hair. Why can't they be what they want to be?

You want to be accepted for who you are. Why not reciprocate by not slapping labels on others?

He's pretty dead on with the Asian thing.

THere are TONS of Asians who try to be more 'white' in America, and that defintion is often very simplistic and surface level. It has nothing to do with 'hard work' or 'studying' as most Asians of Chinese origin don't consider whites to be terribly academic.

Rather, it's a standard of western beauty. Western looks, specifically your "Apple Pie" & "All American" type is widely accepted in the Asian community as superior to Asian looks by second generation Asian Americans. Now this is a gross generalization of course, and not every Asian feels this way, but it is prevelent enough for folks like Gunshalen to take note. Then it's also language--the ability to sound like a Californian "surfer" or college student "Like you, know...like, sure....Like, I'm just sooo over it.".... These things are VERY superficial, but they do matter to people who are trying to fit in or find a partner. And that partner, if you're an Asian in America trying to blend in, will be overwhelmingly from the white community, objectified by Aisans, disected and simplified, and .....ultimately poorly mimmicked.

Here's a few examples from my own life:

1. My sister was once dumped by her boyfriend in high school and she cried endlessly, and I heard from her friends that she blamed herself for looking 'too Asian'. Nevermind, she was gorgeous and boys would line up to try and even talk to her.

2. My cousin, who is now well into her 30s won't even admit to knowing what the Thai name to certain foods are. She actually had the nerve to ask what "Pok Boong", which is friend watercrest, was. I responded with, "You know..that stuff you used to beg your mom to cook when we were in grade school."

ALL of my cousins and my sister, second generation Asians, have only EVER dated white people and have only ever considered white people to be attractive, or the standard of attractiveness. My cousines had the benefit of growing up most of their lives in California, which is saturated with Asians in comparison to most of the USA, and they grew up multi-racial with a mix of Asian, latino, and white friends (they're racist towards blacks I guess, cause I didn't spot any black friends).

At any rate, even all their Asian friends have only ever dated white--in an environment that is VERY easy to date other Asian or latinos (or blacks).

First generation Asians 'off the boat' who are trying to make the adjustment to being in America often view anything 'American' as being 'white'. They do not consider blacks or latinos fully fledged Americans. Much of this is due to inner Asian racism (Asian cultures are RACIST AS HELL), but it is also compounded by the fact that media still bombards us with narrow standards of beauty, and Asians, specifcally male Asians seldom ever meet that standard.

People will often say, "I'm not not into Asian guys." Or you get the ignorant (and a moderator on this site has actually TYPED IT--I can pull up that thread), "don't they have small penises?". Hell, the ones who are trying to be polite will simply say, "He's not my type."

I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "He's cute, but he's Asian." Hell, I even had a girl who made a misdialed my phone strike up a hilarious conversation with me (hilariously, we were both drunk). She said that she wanted to meet me, and I responded by saying, "nope. Not gonna happen. I don't know you." She said, "oh come on, it would be fun! I don't 'even care how you look. hell, you could be Asian and it wouldn't matter--you sound fun!"

THe sad thing about Asian Americans of my generation (or any generation), is that not enough of them are fighting the stereotypes, but instead are accepting them. Complicit in this, is the dying of the hair blonde, or wearing colored contacts---the avoidance of 'tanning' to lighten skin--Asian skin can get lighter than many caucasions, though the tint is towards yellow and not peach. Margeret Cho once did a hilarioius skit called "Asian Chicken Salad" on youtube, where she said that sometimes, she forgot that she was Asian...until that awkward moment that you're reminded when somebody else reminds you....often in unflattering ways. I used to forget I as Asian too lol, and for years and years, identified with being 'white' because I was mixed. I no longer do, though I have nothing against being white---Lawd do I love some white meat...but, I'm Asian.

At any rate, what Gunshalen is saying rings true to me. "Acting White" is his interpretation of Asian's own take on "acting white", which simply means to act like the archetype of Americana---a white, 'all American' male--mid-western, or Calfronian accent, light skin, light hair, round eyes, etc.--superficial stuff. Asians straight off the boat will often do this because they (especiall gay men or men in general) come to realize very quickly that they are at the very bottom of the barrel when it comes to being considered sexually attractive. Hell, growing up, I remember I would cringe every time an Asian male was seen on screen--he was ALWAYS the nerdy scientist or sexless comic relief. You try to distance yourself from that as much as you can if you want to get some ass.

One of my favorite shows, "New Girl" right now doesn't even have a single Asian male character in it, except breifly in the pilot, and he wasn't even good looking.

As far as the 'gay community', I don't even know or care what that is.

Politically, I'm a liberal, and gay rights fall under a larger umbrella for me.

I detest images I've seen at Pride. I find the sterotypical gay interests

so uterly cartoonish, I often laugh.

I dated someone who was a HUGE Madonna fan, and his friends too.

I simply asked what was so great about her, to which I got a resounding

"you're hopeless" attitude.

These superfiical characteristics are in ALL communities---Hetero ones

expect you to be able to wax sports talk---I detest talking about sports.

However, with the gay 'community', I've noticed these expectations

and superficialities are pushed to an extreme.

I really don't 'connect' with the stereotypical gay mind. I don't understand it. There was

a time I thought I did--but I don't. I find it almost repulsive and broken.

I think this is why I'm so attracted to gay nerds. They're odd...They're

a bit dorky.....But so much more genuine.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to decry other peoples' prejudices while carrying on with your own. Why can't people just be who they are - whatever that might be - without people accusing them of "acting" this or that?

We all know what it means "to act white" or "act black". I think this PC world has made these forbidden expressions and, while sometimes they are used for spreading assholishness, we all know well good what it means and that sometimes it might be said without the intent of offense.
I doubt Gun meant something terrible by it.

That was excellent Dan biggrin you hit on the head and preached to the choir. Of course you live in Thailand and have been in America to & have see it all. I got in an argument with 2 of my good friend's in Thailand because they said they where trying to whiten there skin & that white people are seen as more attractive. I argued them down hard trying to tell them how wrong they are... and i OFTEN get BEAUTIFUL, I Mean i have been lucky to have met & even dated some gorgeous asian men. And some have darker skin ala Filipino or thai... and most of them say they wish they where lighter. I just don't get it, i think they look great with the dark skin..... but they don't see it confused

Oh PS i think I started that thread you talked about where this certain mode said that... i remember. And i often have people first question is don't all Asians have small dicks rolleyes to which i reply A. No they have small, average & above average like most normal people B. I'm a top so why would i give 2 shits about size lol

What does it mean to "act white" or "act black"?

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to decry other peoples' prejudices while carrying on with your own. Why can't people just be who they are - whatever that might be - without people accusing them of "acting" this or that?

We all know what it means "to act white" or "act black". I think this PC world has made these forbidden expressions and, while sometimes they are used for spreading assholishness, we all know well good what it means and that sometimes it might be said without the intent of offense.
I doubt Gun meant something terrible by it.

It's no different than you and I sticking purse on straight or questionable (DAN) ppl's posts. wink

As for a deep thoughtful opinion on your OP, Gun, I will have to re-read this thread because...umm...I might have had one or 2 of these martini but I do agree with everyone who has said that EVERY COMMUNITY IS FUCKED UP. It's a human thing. shrug

Lol, i think i have been attracted to gay nerds for awhile:P people used to always say i dug nerds. And i used to disagree now i full on will agree with pleasure biggrin

Also i think the gay world is what really turned me off from Madonna & GaGa confused , they just... lord the way they parade around like those 2 died for everyones sins & they created mankind.

Now grant i LOVE me some Ray Of Light album & i even dig a few GaGa songs, but the way the gay community has this torch held for them is odd. I get GaGa has from the begining talked about gay rights, when did Madonna start being all for gay rights? someone even told Scarlet she was the first artists to talk about A.I.D.S? Yeah right lol

But i'm in between if i am more disling the sterotypics or the kinds that try so hard as mentioned to be straight. So many try to act like they are just straight men that happen to like dudes, that whole mentality is just retarted to me.

It's not odd for the gay community to hold torches for folk like Gaga or Madonna (or Cher or Liz or Babs or Bette...the list goes on). These are outspoken fabulous women (the fabulous depends on who you happen to be a fan of of course) who have stood up for our community when so many other famous folk chose to just hush on the subject.

Madonna has pretty much always been an alli of the Gay community. She was most certainly NOT the first to talk about AIDS. I would say that Liz Taylor did so (or at least became an ambassador) before her. One of our own, Mr. Larry Kramer, is who I would credit with taking the biggest stand on this early on. Anyone who hasn't read or seen his play "The Normal Heart" should.

hey, i do my best as a down to earth as possible. i am a country type of person. i always try to be accepting of people for who and how they are. some spell the word t-o-l-e-r-a-n-c-e.

just be yourself. the problem with so many of us people is that we try to fit into another's life-glove.

then some of us become a judge of that "another" because the fit was not perfect.

in the process of trying to look to others for our sense of self worth, style, or acceptable mindset is that we lose so many of our years not focusing on ourselves. it is possible for one to be caught up in an analytical labyrinth.

respectfully:

since you came out, why not just let others be who they want to be. be they, short, tall, trim, thin, fat, chubby, loud, flamboyant, girlie, guyee, stoic, or caught in cultural self-denial, or those still in the cocoon of self acceptance, or whatever. just let it/them be.

imo you should realize the courage it took for you to come out. be proud of you. you and your family, close friends and associates are the ones that matter.

>people shouldn't waste time looking for a hero in others-"there comes a time when you have to be your own hero."

2. "do not worry about them and what they do or say, unless the word leader is stamped on their forehead-even then conformity is a matter of choice."

3. "you are you, therefore enjoy being your real self."

So when you are of a mixed race... How does one choose which side to identify with? And why is it wrong to the other race if you choose to identify with the race that is not theirs?? because im German and Czech with a little Irish sprinkled on top and I could care less how people see me or what I identify with...

Im genuinely curious as to how one "chooses"...

This is my stance on it (I'm mixed race).

You chose the side you feel most comfortable with, even if that isn't a side---some people actually call themselves mixed, like Tiger Woods.

My stance is that it's a personal decision, and whoever has a problem with it should just mind their own business.

With regards to my cousins and family It's not so much that they are more comfortable with being white that is the problem---it's that the view being Asian as lesser.

I don't view being white as lesser--it's given me a wonderful penis, an adequate amount of body hair, and the ability to stand just shy of 6 feet tall. I love being white, and I find white folks gorgeous. But, I identify with being Asian.

It's quite complicated for mixed race people.

The Asians Gunshalen is referring to aren't mixed though. They're first and second generationers of a single race who view their own race as being less adequate.

Interesting view....

I got to say personally, i view myself as just white. But i am mixed with Cherokee & German, but i don't really see myself as mixed. Also i actually have a lot of asians saying i look part asian cause of my eyes, a lot have said i have Japanese eyes... i don't see it lol to me i just look white & not mixed at all.
