I'll tell you my advice: I used to write short stories and I would submit them to the very very best magazines (shoot for the top) and sometimes I would even get back nice handwritten notes from them, I got a few from the New Yorker, saying things like, "This is not quiet right for us despite it's evident merit, but keep trying" or telling me that they liked my writing style, whereas whenever I submitted to some nobody magazine I would just get a "NO". And I was so glad that I had the balls to submit to the top notch magazines (who sometimes wrote me back and had nice things to say) because if I had just sent to sucky nobody rags, I would have thought I was a shitty writer. But everytime I got a postive note back from someone like The New Yorker, it gave me all kinds of confidence. I was never published but I never stuck with it either. I have however, just written a novel and I am not even going to try and have a publisher publish it (too much trouble imo) but for around 100 dollars you can publish with "Create Space" a division of Amazon. They make your book available on Amazon and Border's and a few others websites. Granted, not many people buy self published books unless they know about them which is why once it's out there I plan on promoting the hell out of it- buying inexpensive ads on websites, going to local bookstores, whatever. But if you have aspirations to write- keep with it! Good luck to you!

I have several friends who have been published. It took a while and they went through many rejects. Sometimes its just a matter of who reads it and what hot at the time. Keep working and your chin up...if its to happen, it will. Prince's Sarah

the digital age makes self-publishing quite attractive

It was a fun read...I lost it when my computer crashed though.
If I ever decide to publish something I'll probably do the self publishing thing...lots of options these days. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

and you actually read it me loves you. i'm no expert, but imo the digital method simply offers more flexibility. the world of publishing is changing pretty fast. there was a cool article about a minneapolis gal who has sold over a million downloads of her books (.99 cents per) and is thriving by simply getting her own stuff out there. mind you, that takes a lot of time and effort but it's doable for someone who has time
