I don't hate Walmart, but I selectively shopped there.

For example, toilet paper, etc. I would get there.

But I got my veggies and fruits at a local farmer's market--it was actually competitive or cheaper.

I read a book that showed how Walmart has bankrupted companies it did business with, and I made a vow to minimize my patronage there.

I will say this though---they have a nearly no-hassle customer service/return policy. They were curteous and quick when I had to use them. shrug

I wont shop at Walmart. I believe in paying a fair wage and fair insurance coverage to employees something Walmart does not do. In washington State the employer with the most people who are on welfare (state govt handouts) is Walmart. Meaning they don't pay them enough so we as tax payers pay their (some) employees benefits and food stamps for them through govt handouts (welfare.) So, not only does Walmart closed down mom and pop stores, they cost the public money.

Why is it the most profitable retailer wont pay their employees a living wage and give them great insurance coverage???? Perhaps greed??

And they can't say it cant be done. Because a smaller company called Costco does pay a living wage with great insurance coverage for their employees.

Ultimately, I would love to see more cooperatives where smaller stores pool together to ensure merchandise is available.

My main problem with going to smaller places is not finding what I want. If I needed a HEPA air filter for example, going to Walmart was a no brainer--they always had one, in several varieties.

I would certainly pay more for the same if I knew it was supporting a mom-and-pop operation.

I would love to see 'malls' that can compete with Walmart but are composed of community businesses. But, this requires thinking and cooperation--people don't do that well, and they

certainly don't promote it well.

think they're a more positive force in the market--I honestly think they're more negative.

Offer fair trade and organic products on their isles doesn't change the fact that their 'normal'

I have made a vow as a consumer though, to shop local as much as possible. There are big box

stores here in Thailand, but luckily even their prices are often equally and better matched

by smaller venues.

I make it a point to do my homeowrk and try to support local. I wish everybody would try

and do that. I understand it requires a bit of sacrafice, but I honestly think it's the way to go.

I lol about it, but it really shows how many hurt and mentally crushed souls are out there. You really see into people's lives more than u want to see. You basically see the public passing by. I see tons of obese people But what caused them to be obese? Alot of people with mental and health issues. The staff alone has alot of issues. I work with a lot of young mothers many who continue to make bad choices. A lot of promiscuious kids, many who have suffered from sexual abuse. I have basically become a cahier/ customer service rep/ therapist. I've even had a customer find me on FB and message me about problems between him and his babymama. I really have to ground myself mentally before I go in there. You learn about patience and seeing beyond judgement.

But on another note, I had this really and I mean REALLY obese man come through my line in an electric scooter the other day. I try to be kind and nice to everybody. But the way his stomach fat was hanging from his too tight food stained shirt combined with the way he smelled (like old food mixed with skin cheese in between fat creases) made me feel sooooo disturbed that I became nervous trying to get him out of my line fast. I was sooo nervous that I ended up dropping his credit card inside the register. Which meant that we had to unscrew and take apart the register to get it out. Which meant he had to sick around longer...ugh. I try to learn a lesson from everything. That's the most I can get out of working there while I waste my degree.

No hassle return policy is right! You can take back anything at anytime and they will refund your money. I had a friend a long time ago (she was scandalous) and whenever an appliance went kaput she would just take it to walmart and exchange it for a new one- even if she didn't buy it at walmart! and they ALWAYS exchanged for her! eek

I work customer service and people stretch the "no hassle" policy to the limit. Stank drawers, worn panties, tore up shoes, backpacks stretched to the limit. Food on two different receipts unopened claiming it was "stale" (only the cookies were opened with a good date but want to claim the unopened chips and peanut butter were stale too. They had a good date mind u. How can u know if u didn't open it?). We're like the pawn shop, people find stuff in their house to return to get some quick cash. People even steal stuff in the store and bring it up to customer service to return.

hug i swear if he didn't get a 10% employee discount i wouldn't shop there anymore. lol he works at one that is 40 mins. away up in the mountains (which is a pretty quiet and a nice one). but the ones near my house suck, and i'm afraid to even shop at them anymore. they have gang fights and shootings at the ones closest to me all of the time. it's pretty scary. so i usually end up driving the 40 mins. to go to the one he works at. the company was a lot better to work for 8 years ago, than it is now. i'm so glad he is going to college working towards doing something else. thanks for your kind comments tina, he's been through a lot of abuse at walmart, and i do wish they treated their employees better. rose

Make money of it? I DON'T force views or judgements on anyone. Sometimes people don't even want advice they just want someone to talk to. If I can be something positve to someone, I will. We all have problems. I damn sure do. Everyone has a story filled with heartaches disappointments and triumphs. I learn about myself when I learn about others.

BTW, yes I plan on profiting off my skills. I have a marketing degree. And my dream is to run a business along the lines of healing. I want to learn reiki and run a botanica.

Also, in all seriousness, Walmart WILL save you money. I used to boycott Walmart as I felt it was taking from the small mom and pop businesses but times are tough and why am I gonna pay 12 dollars for a hammer from the local hardware store when I can get one for 3 dollars from Walmart?

Which is why when people bitch about Wal-Mart and talk down on people for shopping there I'm pretty much like "Fuck you". When you don't have a lot of money to throw around Wal-Mart is a lifesaver.

I do wish there was more of a backlash from consumers towards big-box stores, because I don't

Offer fair trade and organic products on their isles doesn't change the fact that their 'normal'

I have made a vow as a consumer though, to shop local as much as possible. There are big box

I agree but instead of a mall, I'd rather see the stores in shopping centers where you can park near the store you want to go into and then walk down the sidewalk to another store afterwards if you want to continue shopping. I hate going to malls because it's so hard to find a decent parking place and then you have to walk through a huge building just to get to the store you want to get to. I like to pull up to the front door and park. lol

You can get your money to stretch further and get better quality goods at a second hand store than you can at Walmart. Plus, there are some stores that will match Walmart prices.

Yeah, I'm sorry. When I said, 'mall' I merely meant a collection of stores in a single location.

Ultimately, I would love the US to copy Europe's model, where they have 'mainstreets' with stores lined up and down---you park on the parallel streets behind the stores you like, but can walk the main street without worrying about traffic (mostly).

I just think it's not impossible to offer an alternative--it just takes some brains.

To some extent you are right, except the planned obsolescence of the products at most discount box stores don't last as long. Take a polo brand t-shirt that original costs 40 to 60 dollars and can be bought for 14 dollars at an outlet store. I can wash that shirt 30 times and it will look and feel the same. Buy a 3 to 7 dollar t-shirt at target/Walmart /JcPenney store wash it 7 times and not only will it look faded but like "used" clothing. I have a friend who tends to buy electronics at walmart and other cheap stores. They never last long. I'm sure they are exceptions to the rule. But this planned obsolescence is a shorter period then it used to be, especially at discount stores.

I think most people are thinking of clothes for the most part... Walmart clothes usually suck ass, not because they look bad but dont wash or wear well.. Although, I got 3 maxi dresses from there, cute as hell and not made of cotton so they will wash and wear very well! Walmarts cotton is SHIT! lol

Maybe it's just me but I love the personal attention you get from local stores. When they say hello to you and actual know your name & mean it when saying "Have a good day" just doesn't happen at the big stores. The other day, I realized that I needed onions and ran to the local store which was closing. It was w/in 2 minutes and the door was still open and no one frowned at me for coming in at the last minute.
