'Simpsons' creator reveals real location of Springfield finally! i thought it would be illinois. what did you think?
Ay caramba! After 23 seasons and much guessing by fans, "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening has finally revealed the location of the show's town of Springfield, where his famous cartoon family resides.
The long-awaited answer? Springfield, Ore.
"The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show 'Father Knows Best' took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown," Groening explained to Smithsonian magazine.
As to why he's finally confirming the location after all this time? "I don’t want to ruin it for people, you know? Whenever people say it’s Springfield, Ohio, or Springfield, Massachusetts, or Springfield, wherever, I always go, 'Yup, that’s right,' " he further revealed. But locations may not be all that the show's creator borrowed from his hometown and childhood. Groening told Smithsonian that as a kid, he was bullied. Though he wouldn't give up his tormentors' names, he noted, "maybe they are characters named after themselves on 'The Simpsons.' "

Oregon?!? If there's one state that just does NOT scream "The Simpsons" to me, it's Oregon!
But then again, what state DOES scream "The Simpsons"?

Springfield stopped being an interesting city after 1999...

Me, too. I lived there for a decade one summer.
Abraham Lincoln used to tell a story about a circuit-riding preacher visiting Springfield. He asked the preacher what his sermon would be about, and the preacher told Lincoln that he planned to talk about the Second Coming.
Lincoln said to him, "Forget the sermon, preacher. If the Lord has been to Springfield once, he isn't coming back!" We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I've known it was Oregon since 2003. My cousin lives in Eugene, Oregon and when I first visited him in 2003 he took me to Springfield and showed me all the places things in the show are based on. Moe's Tavern in the show is based upon a place that used to be called Max's Bar and Grill, I think they've since changed the name to Max's Tavern probably to get more business. |
