Moving out of the country would be on my list, too. Hell, I consider teaching ESL in foreign countries ALL THE TIME.
I've never been a lotto player but it's hard to resist when the jackpot gets huge. That's so much money, I don't even know what you could do. I mean, the sky would be the limit.
There are at least 100 people I would help in some small way or big way. And I'd probably give a ton of money to charity and try to help some Chicago Public Schools.
I really think helping public schools is an awesome idea. The schools I went to in Baltimore were not so hot. I figure a cool 25 million dollars to my district would help some kids be able to get the attention they deserve in such a crowded and tragic system. I imagine all big metro cities are the same way - dozens of kids lost in the crowd. |

I probably wouldn't give the money directly to the school district because there would be too much room for fraud but I would probably make sure a lot of kids got tutors. I'd also make sure the kids in my old neighborhood wouldn't go hungry. |

Does any of you want me to do the quick maths on how big the chances of winning really are?
I had a lengthy discussion about the lottery system with my dad the other day. I confused him with my logical shit, but when I got round to explaining it all properly, he said:
"well... if you drink a glass of wine and pay 2,50 for it, the money is gone just the same, innit!! "
I answered, "yeah, but I pay for the joy of drinking that glass and not for the hope of winning another one. Or is spending money on the lottery and losing so much fun that it actually pays off?"
His answer: "I gotta work now, leave me alone... "
There is only one thing certain about lotteries:
You cannot win if you do not play.
BTW, I know a guy that won a $126 million lottery about 5 years ago. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, and he still has most of the money (he took a lump sum payment of $36 million or so).
But you can lose, and the way the odds are at the moment, you probably will.

This must be reverse psychology. Get everyone to doubt their chances so yours go up whilst you horde tickets under your mattress.

Yes, you can lose if you play, but you cannot win if you don't.
Sure, the odds are astronomically against winning, but they 100% for losing if you don't play.

Of course, investing money in lottery becomes a lot easier if you believe in the concept of "luck". I don't, that's why I'll never find enough reasons to take part in the lottery... |

I don’t believe in luck, but I play just the same. Not very often, mind you, just when I see the winning amount go up super high. Luck doesn’t make someone win. It’s all chance.
The investment is so small, you're not really losing much. I only ever buy one or two tickets. And I've probably not spent more than $20 on it in total over the course of my life so far.
$1 for a dream, as my friend used to say.

But wouldn't it make more sense to play when the amount is comparatively low (which is still super high, usually, isn't it), if you do play just once or very rarely? Your chances when you play for the super high sum will rise mathematically only if you have played regularly before; however this is all relative to you losing money each round... |

I believe in luck.
I know people who things just seem to "happen" for them. Others have to claw and sweat to get what they want.
I call it luck, someone else calls it chance, someone else calls it destiny, someone else calls it a mathematical formula.
Whatever it is, I've never won more than $2 at one time playing the lottery off & on for the past 30 years...meanwhile the woman in that article has hit million-dollar payouts 4 times.

True, but one should never look at playing the lottery as an investment. It's a lark. It's something that is worth a dollar or two from time to time, but never worth putting needed money into.
I'm not saying I expect to win, or would ever put food money towards lottery tickets.
I'm just saying that if I don't buy a ticket, I can't win. No matter how astronomical the odds of me winning are, not playing/not being able to win is the only true absolute in this. |

You have to live in (or be able to drive to) a state that participates in that lottery.
Walk into any convenience store and buy tickets.

Right, but how many numbers do you pick and is there one of those "extra numbers" you have to pick that are like a wild card or something? I've never really understood what they're there for. |

You pick 5 numbers + 1 "megaball" number.
If you get all six correct, you win the jackpot.
If you get only the 5 "general" numbers, you win something (last week it was $250K)
If you get 4 out of 5 + mega, you win ($10K)
If you get 4 out of 5 without the mega, you win ($150.00)
& it gets progressively diminished. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! |
