If it's night time, put your headphones on and respect your neighbors.

If it's day time, high volume is fair game. But be easy on the bass level.

How late is night time? Sometimes it can be light outside at 9pm in the summer. I play music loud at my home when I'm there and the people below me bang, crash, and stomp around upwards of 10pm at night sometimes. Makes me feel obliged to blast music until midnight.

On a school night, it's 9pm/2100 hours, Monday through Thursday. It's 11pm/2300 hours on Friday & Saturday. Keep in mind that in an apartment complex, the walls are hollow in most cases.

If you live in an apartment you have to acknowledge you’re going to hear other people’s noise from time to time.

And because of that, it’s important that everyone be respectful of everyone else.

If a neighbor were blasting music in the day and I needed to sleep I’d try to move to a room where I couldn’t hear the music, turn on a fan to drown it out, etc. If that weren’t possible, (or I could still hear it despite all that) I’d respectfully explain my situation and ask them to turn it down. If someone asked me and my music was, indeed, turned up loud, I’d comply without hesitation. Because I want to be a good neighbor and I expect the same in return.

If it’s after noise ordinance rules (9pm-9am in my condo association) I’m going to ask nicely first and then call the cops if you don’t comply. Do NOT mess with my sleep schedule.

I’ve never had to do that, though. I’ve talked to neighbors about it before and they’ve all apologized for disturbing me and made sure it doesn’t happen again.

I once lived in an apt building, and this heiffer upstairs used to do stuff all the time to try to get under my skin...throw trash over her porch, pour liquids through the porch, flood her bathroom and stomp around (I could hear her talking shit towards me as she did some of this.....). I didn't respond because I was pregnant and figured she would eventually get bored....

So the day she dared to come down with a major attitude telling me to turn down my music (which could not even be heard from outside my apartment door). She was, again, just trying to mess with me and had stepped it up since she knew I was with child.

Anway, I opened the door (with my rottweiler obediently sitting behind me) and was all polite.... oh, is my music bothering you? Oh my, I didn't realize that..... I then put in a Myles Davis song that was ALL bass....(I think it was called Be Bop) set that song on continious play...turned the speakers to the wall....made sure it made the pipes vibrate.....dropped the dog off at the family store and went on my way. I likely returned 6 to 7 hours later. That bitch straight up left me alone for a very long time.

This sounds fair enough and I agree 100%. I had to learn the hard way in my first flat here in my city that there is a Sunday noise ordinance from 1pm-4pm...this is the time that they observe a traditional European siesta like in Italy or Spain. It's the time when people rest and rest up for "4pm Coffee" (a major cultural tradition here), or just plain gear up for the new work week. I respect that tradition and was actually pretty embarrassed when I realized I was jacking up everyone's siesta with my loud ass Salsa music. But my neighbors didn't trip out, they respectfully asked me to turn my music down and then rationally explained why. I have since never done so again and would have little patience for someone too selfish or inconsiderate for the general welfare of our living environment that would somehow feel entitled to just blatantly ignore ordinances because they felt like it or felt above following rules.

Except for that first apartment, I am very lucky though that in all living spaces since then, I've always been surrounded by neighbors actively involved in fine or performing arts, so loud music (in good taste evillol ) would never be a problem as long as it's not during siesta Sunday. lol

The same thing happened to me about a month after I moved into my apartment. Some bitch knocks on my door and says my bass is coming all through her wall. I asked her which apartment she lived in and she lived two apartments down with a neighbor inbetween us. There's no way in hell she heard my music because I tested the volume level when I moved in and stood outside my front door. If you you stood in the area right in front of the door, you could just barely hear it thump and once you walked a few feet back onto the sidewalk, you couldn't hear it all. There's no way in hell that bitch heard my music two apartments down.

As for the neighbor between us, I've heard his bass just slightly. I think it must have been his music she was hearing but thought it was mine. I have no problem with his music and apparently he has no problem with mine either since he has never said anything. About two months later, the lady on the other side of the bitch's wall moved and someone moved into her apartment and they played their music really loud. The bitch was sandwiched inbetween two apartments where folks like to jam and she moved the hell out of there as fast as she could. falloff

I bought a new receiver when I first moved in and I have no idea what it sounds like at full volume and I'm dying to find out but I'm scared to test it and always have been scared to test it because I've never lived in apartments until now and don't know fully how much I can get away with. lol

When the bitch two doors down knocked on my door, I had tested my volume level several times by walking outside with the door shut weeks earlier. My new receiver's volume level has digital numbers. The night she knocked on my door, I had it on 30. I just assumed it went up to 100. I turned the music off and turned the knob all the way over and the maximum volume level was on 60 so that meant I had it only halfway up and believe me, halfway up is me already toning it down. I play it at around 20 now and I'm really feeling my oats, I may sneak it up to 24. But I really don't think it was my music that the bitch heard that night but she has had me paranoid ever since. As for being easy on the bass, that's like telling me to turn it off completely because I keep my bass control all the way over to the max because bass and drums is what I live for. Why do you think I hate current music so much....no bass and drums. lol

In the shitty I live in, the council state that loud music must be turned down after 10pm, it used to be 9.

They come round with their little noise-o-meters if someone complains about noise. They are known locally as The Noise Nazi's.
